VASSAR CLEMENTS & Friends Strawberry Festival Camp Mather, CA 9/15/91

Soundboard:FM?

Tut Taylor Archive Cassette #107 contains
two separate recordings.  Side A is a
live performance at the Strawberry Festival
(Camp Mather, CA, 9/15/91) by Vassar Clements,
with David Grisman, John Hartford, Mark O'Connor,
& Gene Libbea.  Side B contains what appears to be
several studio session recordings by Vassar
Clements; on the first several songs it
sounds like David Grisman on mandolin, but then
Vassar is supported by a full band that sounds
like the Earl Scruggs Revue (with Earl Scruggs
and Josh Graves).  The tunes on Side B are
also found on Archive Reels #14 and #47.

comments:
This sounds to me like a full set from Tom Scott and his L.A. Express, not sure if it's the
1st or 2nd show, I think my copy of this came from a reel master (since there is no flip cut
that I could find in my copy). This group didn't make alot of albums on their own, but this
was I believe the year before they joined up for a tour in Joni Mitchell's group (which did
release a nice live disc, "Joni Mitchell with Tom Scott & the L.A. Express live"). I wonder if
Joni made the choice to do that after listening to this tour. This is nice smooth jazz, but
not "cheese-jazz". Robben Ford may be the best known member of this group (after Tom Scott)
and would go on to play with Miles Davis many years after this, you may hear why in this set.
He was already a very good player. This concert is the tour of the only studio TSLA Express
release I've ever heard, "Tom Cat", which I'm told is a jazz classic of the 70's. It is to
me, I used to listen to this (another edited version of this broadcast) alot, and they do a
nice version of my favorite song from this album," Mondo". I think they play the whole thing
(it's only a single disc on vinyl, not sure if it ever came out on CD but I suspect so, a
very nice album it is. I haven't had a working turntable in years, so I hope I can find the
Tom Cat release on CD. Tom was a very active studio player on countless people's albums/CD's
in the 70's and 80's. I don't know how many of his tours were just his own group, this is the
only one I've heard, and I think most jazz appreciaters will find something to like in this set
(if not all of it).   The reception seems good on this, not sure why it has some hiss in parts
and other parts sound clean, it all comes from the same source. There is no opening introduction
announcement as there is for all of WBCN's countless live broadcasts, probably edited out or
missed in the source tape, it begins with applause, and the length suggests to me that this
is probably the full show (I think the entire set is music from Tom Cat so they had to do some
stretching out, since "Tom Cat" is a single album length CD.)

GOV'T MULE - DUB SIDE OF THE MULE

Jam band and festival crowds love reggae, and generally want way more than what they get in this department. The Grateful Dead, the pioneers of the field, and Phish both incorporated reggae into their sets early on, though this is not a widely known facet of either’s repertoire. While the Allman Brothers aren’t known for the same, their longtime guitarist Warren Haynes has always thrown some reggae into the mix in his own projects, particularly Gov’t Mule, the jam band he formed in 1994 with bassist Allen Woody. Mighty High, a 2007 album by “The Mule,” featured Rastafari-inspired reworkings of earlier material, as well as a selection of reggae covers, and they have occasionally worked with Toots Hibbert over the years. At their New Year’s Eve 2006 concert at Beacon Theatre in New York City, the group brought the legendary Maytals frontman for a full hour set, backing him on some of his most classic songs including “Pressure Drop,” “54-46 Was My Number,” “Reggae Got Soul,” as well as a rendition of Toots’ version of the Radiohead song “Let Down.” That performance is now seeing commercial release April 7th with Dub Side of the Mule, part of a series of archival live recordings being released by Evil Teen Records to celebrate Gov’t Mule’s 20th anniversary this year. The show also featured a version of “Hard Road,” an unreleased, Selassie-inspired Toots track that’s been a part of the Maytals live show in recent years. With no new Toots material or shows on the horizon, as the singer continues to recover from a head injury sustained in 2013 (get well, brother), we’re pleased to be able to share something fresh from one of our favorite voices, with a premiere of “Hard Road,” as contained on the deluxe edition of Dub Side of the Mule.
