Of course for release #200 I wanted something special so I went through the archives to find some good soundboard. The
ABWH tour is still one of my favourite tours ever, although I had just seen one show in November 1989. This one comes from
the earlier leg of the EU tour that took place in Northern Europe & UK. This is an amazing recording, albeit with two
incomplete tracks. At one point I thought about patching the missing bits with the existing audience source from the same
night but I thought I would leave it exactly as I received it.

For those who remember this tour, it was brilliant. Not only the four guys were playing extraordinarily good, but on the
bass we could appreciate the great Tony Levin taking the place of Chris Squire. I wish I could see more of that. Infact, I
had bought the ticket for the Modena show but that got cancelled because of Jon's voice.

Here it is folks, my series reaches release #200 and I hope you've had a good time to listen to some of my selections.
Be happy and I wish to all DIMErs a Merry Christmas! Take Care.

Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe (with Tony Levin): The Summit, Houston, TX-August 28, 1989-Master Tape

There have been a number of different versions/remasters of this show floating around for some time. A number of those versions have no lineage and/or come from higher-gen copies. This post is not a rehash or reseed of those versions.

This is a brand new transfer direct to cd-r from the metal cassette masters and it comes to us courtesy of BF. This show is well-known because Tony Levin collapsed a short time after the concert due to illness. The next night's concert at the Dallas Starplex was cancelled. This Houston gig is a very tight performance by the band and a fine recording as well. Song samples provided. Enjoy!

JOHNNY WINTER - Remembrance vol. 1

Johnny Winter – Remembrance vol. 1 (2015)

Johnny WinterFor Johnny Winter’s Remembrance vol. 1, the sorely missed artist surely shares some incredibly rare guitar shredding live performances. These 3 CD’s feature a large selection of the late artist’s archived recordings from his Live Bootleg Series, (Disc 1), the first time CD release of his rare vinyl Live Bootleg Special Edition (Disc 2) and more unreleased treasures from his new series Live Rarities (Disc 3).
The blues wielding axeman steps out with super-extended workouts on concert classics like his masterful version of Freddie King’s Hideaway, Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode, The Rolling Stones’ Jumpin’ Jack Flash and newly discovered rare performances of Mean Town Blues, Sound the Bell and Ray Charles’ Come Back Baby.
Always paying homage to his fellow bluesmen, Johnny dug far back into his archives for super rare performances of the stellar Muddy Waters’ classic Rollin’ and Tumblin’ (acoustic version) and the jump blues of Elmore James’ Stranger Blues, Robert Johnson’s blues champion Crossroads, and B.B. King’s brilliant Mean Mistreater.
As a continuing gift to his fans, Johnny includes first time live archive releases of The Surfaris’ Wipe Out, Chuck Berry’s Christmas classic Run Rudolph Run and Howlin’ Wolf’s stellar Killing Floor.

JEFFERSON STARSHIP - Live In Central Park May 12, 1975

Jefferson Starship – Live In Central Park May 12, 1975 (2013)

In between the release of these two albums, the band played a free show in Central Park before a massive crowd (estimates vary widely, but nobody questions that turnout was huge). And even though Red Octopus wasn’t yet in stores on this May 12, 1975 date, the band played two of its three soon-to-be-popular numbers, along with the most popular numbers from the previous record. To that they added some material from other sources: some songs from Balin’s previous (and little-heard) band Bodacious DF (“The Witcher” and “Drivin’ Me Crazy”) and a spotlight number featuring fiddler Papa John Creach. And for the faithful, the tail-end of the show included three classic Airplane numbers, “White Rabbit,” “Somebody to Love” and “Volunteers.”

That set, spread across two discs, has now been released by Real Gone Music. The original show was broadcast on FM radio, so high fidelity tapes (courtesy of the band’s management, Gordon Anderson tells us in a brief Producer’s Note) were used for all but a few seconds of the release. And the band’s in fine form: the aggregation might not have adhered to the same style as Jefferson Airplane, but then by the mid 70s, the original members had all moved in their own individual musical direction. Even had Jack Casady (bass) and Jorma Kaukonen (guitar) somehow been persuade to travel on the Starship (sorry again!) , the result would likely still not have sounded like the Airplane; that duo’s Hot Tuna work variously explored country blues and power-trio rock styles far removed form Jefferson Airplane’s radio-ready “album rock.”

While Jefferson Airplane had released live documents of their performances (1969's Bless Its Pointed Little Head and Thirty Seconds Over Winterland, Jefferson Starship did not; this release is the first official live recording of the band from the 1970s, and it captures them at their peak.

DAVID AND THE DORKS (David Crosby & The Grateful Dead) – The 1970 Matrix Broadcast (Live) (2014)

David & The Dorks (David Crosby & The Grateful Dead) – The 1970 Matrix Broadcast (Live) (2014)

During the rehearsals and recording sessions for If I Could Only Remember My Name, David Crosby and three members of the Grateful Dead – Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart – played three dates at San Francisco’s Matrix club, December 15th, 16th & 17th, 1970. These rare recordings, from an afternoon rehearsal and an evening live show, capture this unique configuration performing a variety of Dead, Byrds and Crosby material with pretty good sound considering the casual nature of the get-together. The afternoon session is a great, fly-on-the-wall band rehearsal, as Crosby leads the Dead core through arrangements of “Eight Miles High” and “Cowboy Movie.” While there are instances of overloaded mics and sloppy exploration, once the band gets into a groove, and Garcia starts to take off, it’s a joyous sound indeed. The fusion of Crosby’s and Garcia’s styles is more pronounced than what would eventually be heard on If I Could Only Remember My Name… and is all the better for it. Blissed out expansions of DC’s “Triad” and “The Wall Song” are a delight. The live show has circulated as the Dec. 15th show since it first surfaced, though the rehearsal is thought to be from the 16th, based on some of Crosby’s dialog during the tapings. The band alternately called themselves David & The Dorks, David & The Ding-A-Lings and Jerry & The Jets, but were originally billed at the Matrix as Jerry Garcia & Friends.
