RUSH - Spirit of the Airwaves

Rush – Spirit of the Airwaves (2014)

This outstanding live broadcast captures a superb gig by Rush during the band s extensive Permanent Waves tour in 1980 at St. Louis Kiel Auditorium – the Permanent Waves album the group were promoting having been released on 1st January that year.
The tour began on 12th January in Michigan, took in some Canadian dates and eventually wound up back in New York on the 23rd of May, before they headed overseas to perform a further 18 dates in the UK during June. At this stage, Rush were at a highpoint in their lengthy career. Since forming in Willowdale, Toronto twelve years earlier, Rush had released seven albums to increasing acclaim and sales. The band s line-up had been rock solid since drummer, percussionist and lyricist Neil Peart had completed the trio format with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson shortly after the recording of the group s eponymously titled debut in 1974. Onstage Neil has always been a showman, inspired by flamboyant sticksmen Keith Moon, John Bonham and Ginger Baker. Initially the band was clearly influenced by British hard rock and heavy Blues groups, particularly Cream and Led Zeppelin – indeed Geddy Lee s vocal style has often been compared that of Robert Plant. Three tracks from the Rush album are included as part of this broadcast: Working Man, In The Mood, and just a snippet of Finding My Way. Neil Peart s recording debut with Rush was on their sophomore album Fly by Night released in February 1975. In addition to his magisterial rhythmic skills, Peart also assumed much of the responsibility for writing lyrics from a grateful Geddy Lee.
The more complex arrangement and episodic structure of By-Tor and the Snow Dog was an excellent illustration of the way the band would develop as it highlighted Peart s favoured themes of fantasy and sci-fi. Beneath, Between, Behind and Anthem also represent their second record in this performance. Undoubtedly Peart influenced the band s shift towards a more Progressive rock orientation which was more fully reflected on Rush s next collection of songs, Caress of Steel , released just seven months after Fly By Night . Eschewing the lengthy pieces The Necromancer and The Fountain of Lamneth, which occupied all 20 minutes of side two of the album, only the short, snappy and Zeppelinesque Bastille Day was performed during this show. 1976 s 2112 was Rush s breakthrough album and their first to enter the Billboard Top 100 (it peaked at 61). It went on, however, to become a platinum seller. The whole of Side One of the album is a multi-faceted concept piece based on Anthem , a futuristic novella by Russian-born American author Ayn Rand (first published in England in 1938) – and all bar the short Oracle: The Dream is played during the first section of this concert. Representing 1977 s A Farewell to Kings is that album s magnum opus, Xanadu, whilst La Villa Strangiato is drawn from the following year s Hemispheres . It is another complex piece. Geddy Lee: We spent more time recording Strangiato than the entire Fly by Night album. It was our first piece without any vocals at all. So each section had to stand up with a theme and musical structure of its own. Finally, Rush s then-current album, Permanent Waves contributes The Spirit of Radio and Natural Science. The former was something of a departure for the band as it utilises a reggae style, which was explored further on later albums Moving Pictures (1981) and Signals (1982). A three-minute edit of the track reached number 13 on the UK singles chart and remains a strong fan-favourite. Natural Science is more traditional Rush fare, with multiple movements, and has proved a hugely popular live number ever since.

TANGERINE DREAM - Phaedra Farewell Tour : The Concerts

Tangerine Dream – Phaedra Farewell Tour:

Tangerine Dream – Phaedra Farewell Tour: The Concerts (2014)
This new triple live CD which contains all material from Tangerine Dream’s recent tour through various places around Europe, will be the last document from this Phaedra Farewell Tour. Even some titles from the gigs on the Caribbean Sea are part of the package.
2014 The final tour of the pioneers of new instrumental electronic music. Tangerine Dream, this seven time Grammy nominated European band, is a singular phenomenon. Surrounded by a strong rock n roll identity, they will hardly fit into any given musical pigeonhole. Tangerine Dream has never produced anything calculated to make the masses jump off their chairs and start screaming Top 40 tunes. Nevertheless, many of the 150 (and counting!) CD releases by the band, have their own driving hypnotic pieces and it is nearly impossible to escape from the race of fast driving bass notes. Tangerine Dream has continually striven to intertwine music into feeling on a personal level as opposed to having an audience of mere observers, watching and listening.
When Edgar Froese founded Tangerine Dream back in autumn 1967 – a period when most of the musical world had just gotten its big wake- up call from various places around the globe – he already had had visions to discover new sounds and musical techniques. After more than 40 years, through dozens of people joining and leaving the band, Edgar is still provocative and challenging in his uniquely philosophical musical universe. As a man of few words but a wry sense of humour, he has shown that music often can reach places far beyond those found by the descriptions of words. Very few artists survived the capricious music business world for such a long time period.
For many years – and still – TD did lots of hunting scores for Hollywood movie productions, a very lucrative second career within the remarkable TD artistic diary. At a time when electronic instruments were widely misunderstood and an independent music industry was virtually non-existent, Tangerine Dream became recognized as the pioneers of a new instrumental music and introduced new sounds, sound effects and production techniques.
TD released with PHAEDRA 1974 in London the first audio document using the big MOOG modular system as the main sequencing module – this record turned into gold in over 14 countries. In the meantime this TD production is known as the cornerstone for modern contemporary electronic sounds and sequences.
Great painters, photographers, actors, architects, writers and dancers have honoured Tangerine Dream for the inspiration for their own work they‘ve drawn from listening to the music of TD. Tangerine Dream‘s reputation in the world of music, their vast experience and professionalism, their unforgettable live performances as well as their record sales give them the freedom to work independently. At the very least it is the best way to keep and develop TD‘s all time trademark: Originality which can’t be copied or raped.
The current line-up consists of head and founder Edgar Froese (keyboards, guitar), Thorsten Quaeschning (keyboards), Linda Spa (flute, sax, keyboards), Iris Camaa (percussion, v- drums), Bernhard Beibl (guitar) and Hoshiko Yamane (violin).

Jethro Tull's famous concept album 'Thick As A Brick' was originally released in 1972 and featured one continuous track spread across two sides of an LP telling the story of a young boy called Gerald Bostock. 40 years later in 2012, Jethro Tull's founder and leader Ian Anderson created 'Thick As A Brick 2: Whatever Happened To Gerald Bostock?'. Following this release Ian Anderson took both albums on the road to perform the complete story of Gerald Bostock and this concert from the tour was filmed in Iceland. The show combines music, video screens and mime to bring Gerald's tale to life as never before and create the definitive presentation of 'Thick As A Brick'.

MORE
By Wikipedia
Thick as a Brick - Live in Iceland is a live album and Blu-ray/DVD by Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson. The live concert was recorded in Reykjavík, Iceland on 22 June 2012.

It was part of the Thick as Brick Tour by Ian Anderson and his touring band in Europe and the United States throughout 2012 and 2013.

REVIEW
by Gregory Heaney
One of the great concept albums by one of the great prog rock acts, Thick as a Brick found Jethro Tull making a big splash with the monolithic, one-track juggernaut of an album. Revisiting that classic work, frontman Ian Anderson takes to the stage in Iceland, performing the album, as well as its 2011 sequel, Thick as a Brick 2, in front of a live crowd on Thick as a Brick: Live in Iceland. Performing both albums in their entirety, this live performance allows listeners to experience the sprawling tale of Gerald Bostock as one epic piece, making this an essential listen for fans of the legendary English band.

BIOGRAPHY
by James Pearce
Probably best known as the lead vocalist, flutist, and guitarist in the progressive folk-rock band Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson has also released several albums under his own name. Born in Fife, Scotland, Anderson was interested in music from a young age, gaining influence from his father James' record collection of big band and jazz, as well as early rock & roll by Elvis Presley. The Anderson family later relocated to Blackpool where Ian finished his studies. In 1963, alongside his school friends, he formed the band the Blades, with Anderson on vocals and harmonica. The band went through several name and line-up changes and in 1967, in an attempt to move closer to London, the band moved to Luton. The group quickly fell apart and following a succession of dead-end jobs, Anderson realized that he "would never be as good as Eric Clapton" and decided to sell his electric guitar -- once owned by Lemmy from the band Motörhead -- and instead trade it for a flute. This bold move turned out to create the trademark sound for the basis of his band Jethro Tull, with Anderson learning the instrument quickly and playing in a blues-rock style. Anderson, together with Glenn Cornick (bass), Mick Abrahams (guitar), and Clive Bunker (drums), first toyed with the names Navy Blue and Bag of Blues before settling on Jethro Tull, sometimes misprinted as Jethro Toe. In 1968, the band released their debut album This Was on famous label Island Records. The album was recorded only a few months after Anderson began to play flute. It wasn't a commercial success but it did score them a residency at the Marquee club in London where Anderson would develop his iconic on-stage presence, where he would jump around in an old overcoat and stand on one leg while playing the flute. Jethro Tull went on to record many albums, with most of their success coming in the '70s from the albums Benefit (1970), Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972), and Living in the Past (1972). Anderson has also released six solo albums under his own name, starting with 1983's "Walk Into Light," in addition to guest appearances on albums by the likes of Fairport Convention (Portmeirion) and Men Without Hats ("On Tuesday"). He also produced music for Steeleye Span's 1974 album Now We Are Six. Aside from music, Anderson's business activities included owning several salmon farms in the U.K.

Comments:
Entire show with Clarence Clemons.
Final performance of "Hope It Won't Be This Way, Always".

Overall this is a surprisingly clean SBD/low analog generation without any major tape/mechanical glitches beyond the flips and very little hiss.  The tape speed was slow requiring a pitch transposition of 1.0386.
