TANGERINE DREAM - Phaedra Farewell Tour : The Concerts

Tangerine Dream – Phaedra Farewell Tour:

Tangerine Dream – Phaedra Farewell Tour: The Concerts (2014)
This new triple live CD which contains all material from Tangerine Dream’s recent tour through various places around Europe, will be the last document from this Phaedra Farewell Tour. Even some titles from the gigs on the Caribbean Sea are part of the package.
2014 The final tour of the pioneers of new instrumental electronic music. Tangerine Dream, this seven time Grammy nominated European band, is a singular phenomenon. Surrounded by a strong rock n roll identity, they will hardly fit into any given musical pigeonhole. Tangerine Dream has never produced anything calculated to make the masses jump off their chairs and start screaming Top 40 tunes. Nevertheless, many of the 150 (and counting!) CD releases by the band, have their own driving hypnotic pieces and it is nearly impossible to escape from the race of fast driving bass notes. Tangerine Dream has continually striven to intertwine music into feeling on a personal level as opposed to having an audience of mere observers, watching and listening.
When Edgar Froese founded Tangerine Dream back in autumn 1967 – a period when most of the musical world had just gotten its big wake- up call from various places around the globe – he already had had visions to discover new sounds and musical techniques. After more than 40 years, through dozens of people joining and leaving the band, Edgar is still provocative and challenging in his uniquely philosophical musical universe. As a man of few words but a wry sense of humour, he has shown that music often can reach places far beyond those found by the descriptions of words. Very few artists survived the capricious music business world for such a long time period.
For many years – and still – TD did lots of hunting scores for Hollywood movie productions, a very lucrative second career within the remarkable TD artistic diary. At a time when electronic instruments were widely misunderstood and an independent music industry was virtually non-existent, Tangerine Dream became recognized as the pioneers of a new instrumental music and introduced new sounds, sound effects and production techniques.
TD released with PHAEDRA 1974 in London the first audio document using the big MOOG modular system as the main sequencing module – this record turned into gold in over 14 countries. In the meantime this TD production is known as the cornerstone for modern contemporary electronic sounds and sequences.
Great painters, photographers, actors, architects, writers and dancers have honoured Tangerine Dream for the inspiration for their own work they‘ve drawn from listening to the music of TD. Tangerine Dream‘s reputation in the world of music, their vast experience and professionalism, their unforgettable live performances as well as their record sales give them the freedom to work independently. At the very least it is the best way to keep and develop TD‘s all time trademark: Originality which can’t be copied or raped.
The current line-up consists of head and founder Edgar Froese (keyboards, guitar), Thorsten Quaeschning (keyboards), Linda Spa (flute, sax, keyboards), Iris Camaa (percussion, v- drums), Bernhard Beibl (guitar) and Hoshiko Yamane (violin).

Jethro Tull's famous concept album 'Thick As A Brick' was originally released in 1972 and featured one continuous track spread across two sides of an LP telling the story of a young boy called Gerald Bostock. 40 years later in 2012, Jethro Tull's founder and leader Ian Anderson created 'Thick As A Brick 2: Whatever Happened To Gerald Bostock?'. Following this release Ian Anderson took both albums on the road to perform the complete story of Gerald Bostock and this concert from the tour was filmed in Iceland. The show combines music, video screens and mime to bring Gerald's tale to life as never before and create the definitive presentation of 'Thick As A Brick'.

REVIEW
by Gregory Heaney
One of the great concept albums by one of the great prog rock acts, Thick as a Brick found Jethro Tull making a big splash with the monolithic, one-track juggernaut of an album. Revisiting that classic work, frontman Ian Anderson takes to the stage in Iceland, performing the album, as well as its 2011 sequel, Thick as a Brick 2, in front of a live crowd on Thick as a Brick: Live in Iceland. Performing both albums in their entirety, this live performance allows listeners to experience the sprawling tale of Gerald Bostock as one epic piece, making this an essential listen for fans of the legendary English band.

BIOGRAPHY
by James Pearce
Probably best known as the lead vocalist, flutist, and guitarist in the progressive folk-rock band Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson has also released several albums under his own name. Born in Fife, Scotland, Anderson was interested in music from a young age, gaining influence from his father James' record collection of big band and jazz, as well as early rock & roll by Elvis Presley. The Anderson family later relocated to Blackpool where Ian finished his studies. In 1963, alongside his school friends, he formed the band the Blades, with Anderson on vocals and harmonica. The band went through several name and line-up changes and in 1967, in an attempt to move closer to London, the band moved to Luton. The group quickly fell apart and following a succession of dead-end jobs, Anderson realized that he "would never be as good as Eric Clapton" and decided to sell his electric guitar -- once owned by Lemmy from the band Motörhead -- and instead trade it for a flute. This bold move turned out to create the trademark sound for the basis of his band Jethro Tull, with Anderson learning the instrument quickly and playing in a blues-rock style. Anderson, together with Glenn Cornick (bass), Mick Abrahams (guitar), and Clive Bunker (drums), first toyed with the names Navy Blue and Bag of Blues before settling on Jethro Tull, sometimes misprinted as Jethro Toe. In 1968, the band released their debut album This Was on famous label Island Records. The album was recorded only a few months after Anderson began to play flute. It wasn't a commercial success but it did score them a residency at the Marquee club in London where Anderson would develop his iconic on-stage presence, where he would jump around in an old overcoat and stand on one leg while playing the flute. Jethro Tull went on to record many albums, with most of their success coming in the '70s from the albums Benefit (1970), Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972), and Living in the Past (1972). Anderson has also released six solo albums under his own name, starting with 1983's "Walk Into Light," in addition to guest appearances on albums by the likes of Fairport Convention (Portmeirion) and Men Without Hats ("On Tuesday"). He also produced music for Steeleye Span's 1974 album Now We Are Six. Aside from music, Anderson's business activities included owning several salmon farms in the U.K.

Almost Brothers Band – A Band Of Roadies (2014)

Back in “The Day”, when the Allman Brothers Band had recorded the “Brothers and Sisters” album and we were riding high with the LP reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Album Charts and the song “Rambling Man” reaching No. 2 on the Singles chart, our road crew were riding high with us. They were all very talented in their respective positions, and all very dedicated to us, and to the fans that came to see us. They were recognized by our peers and theirs as being the best road crew in the world, and in my opinion that was certainly the case. As we began to tour behind the release of the record in 1973, there were times when for various reasons the band wouldn’t or couldn’t make sound checks. Our crew would sometimes do them for us, which was a great help and ensured that we would be comfortable when we hit the stage. As time went on, they began to play more on their own, adding in some other players that were in the Macon, Ga. area at the time. The result of this was The Almost Brothers. I can remember them rehearsing quite a lot, working up some cover tunes and writing some of their own. They were all having a great time, and were honing in their musical skills. They became very popular around town, and created a reputation for themselves, playing in some clubs and various other settings. Fortunately, they also recorded some of their material, and after all these years, our then house sound engineer, Buddy Thornton, has uncovered those two track tapes, cleaned them up as much as possible with his expert skills, and herein is the result. Listening to these recordings bring back some great memories for me, and all the musicians involved put their hearts and souls into the Almost Brothers. They were all great folks to work with and I am so glad that we have this recording to document this piece of history. You can hear the fun they were having and the passion they put into their own band…so, listen and enjoy! (Chuck Leavell)

THE GRATEFUL DEAD - Wake Up to Find Out: Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY - 03/29/1990

Grateful Dead – Wake Up to Find Out:

Grateful Dead – Wake Up to Find Out: Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY 3/29/1990 (2014)

Wake Up to Find Out contains the complete concert recorded on March 29, 1990 at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.
At this concert, jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis sat in for one song in the first set, and then for the entire second set. The same show will also be released on the same day as part of the box set Spring 1990 (The Other One). One of the songs from this performance, “Eyes of the World”, was previously released on the album Without a Net.
The March 29, 1990 Grateful Dead concert was the first of several to feature Branford Marsalis as a guest musician. In a 2014 interview, Marsalis recalled that Dead bassist Phil Lesh had invited him to play with the band for one song. “I came up for “Bird Song”, and after the set was over, I said, ‘Thanks for letting me play, guys.’ And they’re like, ‘No, no, stay! Play the second half of the show. We’ll do “Dark Star”.’ That had no significance to me. I’m like, ‘”Dark Star”? Okay. What is it?’ ‘Oh, you’re gonna love it. It’s free, it’s out.’ ‘Great, I can play out.’ They start playing that lick, and the audience goes fucking bananas. Later, I started getting these phone calls on my private number: ‘Man, you were great last night. Thanks for getting them to play “Dark Star”. They haven’t played it in six months.’ I’m like, ‘Who are these people?’…
“There was almost nothing [the Grateful Dead] couldn’t play—and make the shit sound authentic. When they played a song by the Band or Bob Dylan, they played it with the same spirit as the Band or Dylan. They didn’t feel the need to write their own arrangement of it. They were all listeners. There is a point where musicians who establish themselves stop listening to music and start listening to their own rhetoric. The Dead didn’t do that. It was obvious in the way they approached a song.”
