IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY - IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY / MARRYING MAIDEN

It's a Beautiful Day is an American band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1967, featuring vocalist Pattie Santos along with violinist David LaFlamme and his wife, Linda LaFlamme, on keyboards. David LaFlamme, a former soloist with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, had previously been in the band Orkustra, and unusually, played a five-string violin. The other members were Linda LaFlamme (keyboards), Pattie Santos (vocals), Hal Wagenet (guitar), Mitchell Holman (bass) and Val Fuentes (drums). Although they were one of the earliest and most important San Francisco bands to emerge from 1967's social phenomenon Summer of Love, the band never quite achieved the success of contemporaries such as Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Santana, with whom they had connections. The band created a unique blend of rock, jazz, folk, classical and world beat styles during the initial seven years it was officially together.

20th August 1965: UK radio (BBC) 'Saturday Club' (Broadcast 18th September)

The Rolling Stones had pretty much out-grown doing BBC radio shows, so on 20th August 1965 they taped their final  songs which were to be broadcast over two shows in the coming weeks.
‘Oh Baby (We Got A Good Thing Goin’)’ is a storming version that puts the Decca version to shame,
Buster Brown’s ‘Fannie Mae’ is a fine rhythm ‘n’ blues performance of a song they never officially recorded.
20th August: UK radio (BBC) 'Yeh! Yeh!', London. Host: Tony Hall.
                   - Mercy Mercy (Don Covay/Ron Miller)

* with Kiki Dee

This is a pretty good audience recording, considering it was taped in 1976. Very few recordings have surfaced from this period of Elton John's career,
and with this band in particular. The Earl's Court DVD I uploaded recently was from May of this same year, and is the best recording I have
found, but is only partial. This is the entire show, and includes Kiki Dee as a special guest (Bernie Taupin and Billie Jean King as well).
She appears on the current single, at the time, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", and her own hit "I Got the Music in Me". This show also includes
the rarely played song "Empty Sky", as that album had just been released in the United States, six years after its initial release in England.
This may be as good as we get from this period, until they start to empty EJ's vaults. Play this loud and imagine you are in the cheap seats at
MSG!

The Band:
Elton John- Piano/Vocals
Davey Johnstone- Guitar/ Vocals
Ray Cooper- Percussion
Caleb Quaye- Guitars
James Newton Howard- Keyboards
Roger Pope- Drums
Backing Vocals:
Cindy Bullins (Guitar on "Love Song")
John Joyce
