JOHN MAYALL - A Special Life
John Mayall – A Special Life (2014)
John MayallJohn Mayall has been doing this blues thing now for over five decades (he released his first single in 1964), exploring the form in all of its incarnations, from gutbucket country blues to the more urbane jazz side of things, and amazingly, he’s always sounded pretty much like John Mayall, a blues everyman who has always surrounded himself with the best bands and players, a big part of the reason he is still a successful touring act in his eighties.
Mayall’s put out 60 some albums since 1964, and while he’s slowed down a bit in recent years, he’s still good for a new album or live set every couple of years or so. A Special Life, recorded in November 2013 at Entourage Studios in North Hollywood, features Mayall’s current band — guitarist Rocky Athas, bassist Greg Rzab and drummer Jay Davenport — with singer and accordion player C.J. Chenier sitting in on a couple of tracks. It’s a typical Mayall album, featuring a couple of classic blues covers (including Albert King’s “Floodin’ in California” here) and several Mayall originals (most of which unfortunately fall lyrically into the generic), all punctuated by piercing harmonica runs and solid ensemble playing. The opener, a cover of Clifton Chenier’s “Why Did You Go Last Night,” is one of the highlights, a Jimmy Reed-like shuffle given warmth, poignancy, and depth by Clifton’s son C.J.’s accordion swells. Although it is built on a fairly generic blues progression in D, Mayall’s own “World Gone Crazy” stands out because of its subject matter, which pretty much puts the responsibility for war at the feet of religions, most of which are rigidly intolerant of other religions. It’s certainly not one’s run of the mill blues theme. This is what Mayall does. He plays blues right down the middle of the road, never straying too far from the classic Chicago blues model, but he adds embellishments now and then, and when they work, he gently bumps the blues into an interesting side alley.

Comments: Recorded at the Nürburgring Racetrack, Eifel, Germany and aired on "Rockpalast" TV after a 2 hour delay. This is the typical "Rockpalast Mix" that combines both stage and audience mics for a very open sounding recording that at times sounds like both a pure soundboard or a pure audience recording.

WARREN HAYNES / WINTERTIME BLUES
The 1999 11th Annual Warren Haynes benefit concert for Habitat for Humanity offers something for everyone. Disc One opens with soul-filled acoustics by Edwin McCain and Warren Hayes. They are followed by a rolling blues jam hosted by Derek Trucks. Derek Trucks leads with "Rastaman Chant" -- a bow to Reggae that keeps you bouncing. Trucks then lays a solid foundation with the jazzy Chicken Strut for a five-song set that closes out the first disc. The set features guest after guest pushing each other to new heights. Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton, Susan Tedeschi, and Larry McCray mix and match as song after song delivers first rate blues. Larry McCray sizzles on "Ain't That Loving You" and Col. Bruce Hampton will have you kneeling at the altar of the blues with his "Yield Not to Temptation". Tucks closes Disc One with Tedeschi's "Just Won't Burn" (Oh, but she does and so will you).
Tedeschi opens the second disc with a version of "Angel from Montgomery" that rivals Bonnie's rendition. Cry of Love returns after a five-year absence to rock the concert. On "Piece Pipe" they beat out a powerful song that resurrects the spirit of the 60s. Government Mule then does for Disc Two what Tucks did for Disc One - they host a rolling jam featuring Johnny Neal, Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton, Mike Barnes, and Little Milton. Jimmy Neal rips out one great line after another on "Falling Down". Hampton, Neal and Mike Barnes have some fun with Willie Dixon's "Spoonful". The second disc closes with Little Milton reaching new heights on "When the Blues Come Knockin'" followed by Government Mule, Derek Trucks, Little Milton, Johnny Neal and Little Milton in an unforgettable version of "Merry Christmas Baby".
This is a solid two CD set for the serious Blues-Rock fan who appreciates live music and artists who love to jam. - amazon.com

WARREN HAYNES PRESENTS THE BENEFIT CONCERT VOL. 4
How many musicians would kill to get a peek into Warren Haynes' address book? He has been holding his annual benefit Christmas jam concerts in Asheville, North Carolina since 1988, and each time, the lineup is more impressive than the year before. This one, recorded December 21, 2002 but not released until nearly nine years later, documents his 14th such gig, featuring Robert Randolph, moe., John Hiatt, Bob Weir & Friends, and a closing free-for-all with Haynes' Gov't Mule and guests such as DJ Logic and Widespread Panic's Dave Schools. Haynes lends his talents to about half the tracks on this nearly two-and-a-half-hour, double-disc set as he shares the spotlight with Hiatt, moe., Jerry Joseph, Weir, and others. With Weir around, there's a heavy Dead vibe to much of the music, as moe. even covers Dark Star (sounding arguably better and tighter than vintage Dead) and Weir rolling out the Dead's "Truckin'," "Shakedown Street," and "The Other One" with somewhat surprisingly sprightly results. Since Haynes was touring as a temporary member of that band for a while, the connection is logical. Randolph lights a fire under all that noodling with a propulsive nine-minute take on Slim Harpo's "Shake Your Hips" that just about burns the stage down with its intensity. Bluegrass is usually present at these Haynes gatherings, and for this one, he invites Ashville's Sons of Ralph. The band features some lightning-fast mandolin playing from Don Lewis that will have most listeners Googling the group to learn more about them. John Hiatt delivers inspired versions of some of his better-known songs including a ten-minute romp through "Memphis in the Meantime" (with Haynes sitting in). Having the always stellar Sonny Landreth on slide helps raise the temperature substantially. The final 30 minutes are spent on three Gov't Mule tunes, including a raw cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man," with that group's drummer Artimus Pyle, that closes the concert by paying tribute to Haynes' 70s and Southern rock roots. These shows usually run over eight hours, so even at a hefty 150 minutes, this is just a sampler of the music soiree that night. As with the three previous double-disc packages, the recording is pristine and the live setting adds a sharp edge to every performance. The CD's profits, as well as those from the shows, goes to Habitat for Humanity. That gives the proceedings an even more positive vibe, making this a logical purchase for any American roots rock or Dead fan. - allmusic.com
