Review Bobsboots:

The Italian Label KTS quickly established themselves as
the Crown Prince of bootleg CDs in the early 1990's.
Their beautiful packages, silk-screened CDs, graphics,
aesthetics, and quality of recordings was surpassing
the reigning king 'Swinging Pig'. This release is a prime example.
The double CD was released in the new slim line jewel case with a 12 page booklet of images,
itineraries, and reviews. Each CD is silk-screened with an image from the booklet.
The graphics are over the top.
This represents nearly the entire 28 song show in great soundboard quality.
The two missing songs are shown grayed out above.
They had never surfaced among tape traders at the time of this release.
Each song is very tastefully edited in and out to eliminate in between song down time.
There is no music lost, but some purists may find it annoying.
There is also a small amount of white noise (tape hiss).
The concert recording has since been cleaned up
and released in an even better quality as 'CHILD'S BALLOON'

Concert Review
Dylan delivers a knock-out performance. The gospel material is powerful
and biting without a condescending edge.
The older standards are performed with a new fire and passion that
includes them among the best live versions to date.
Dylan stumbles on the lyrics once or twice, but adds new lines as well that more than compensate.
The vocals are crisp are over the top out front and in your face.
The music is tight, well mixed, and well performed.
It might be a little dark, murky, and low in the overall mix for some tastes.
Don't let that sway you from this incredible piece, however.
Others will find the vocals to music relation pure heaven.

Jaclyn LaBranch - backing vocals.

Specs:
MSC > 1C > 1DAT (16bit/48kHz) > Panasonic SV-3700 playback > Pyle Pro cables > WaveTerminal 2496 > Wavelab v5.0.1a record (16/48 wav) > CDWave v1.9.8 (tracking) > Traders Little Helper v2.4.1 (FLAC encoding, level 8) > foobar2000 v0.9.6.8 (tagging).

Nice soundboard recording from a period in which there are very few. At some point this should be patched with the Corly aud tape, which could supply the missing ~90 seconds at the start of Think and the missing ~5 minutes at the end of Tangled Up In Blue.

Overall, this is a pretty workaday first set and a pretty nice second set. A first set comprised of six 5-6 minute songs, clocking in around 36 minutes total, feels pretty cursory. It provides a kind of hit-and-run tightness which is merely interesting. To be fair, the man was at death's door 14 weeks prior to this, and we know that he had to develop his chops and his stamina progressively. Third show out, he's not quite there yet. The second set strikes me as still very short (under an hour), but better than set I. I will forever lament the emergence of "That Lucky Old Sun" into the Garcia Band's repertoire, but it's their band and they get to play what they like, so I'll leave it at that.

setlist:
Public JGB debut of "And It Stoned Me"
Second public JGB performance of "Forever Young", after the Triumphant Return show (debuted on October 4, 1986).
Third public JGB performance of "Lucky Old Sun" (October 4 and 5, 1986).

As my source listing shows this is a transfer from the master tapes recorded that night.  I can guarantee this is the only soundboard that night and here's why I say that:  I was the lighting designer for the show and my friend, Slinky (RIP), was the sound engineer.  We hid my Nakamichi 480 under a pile of clothes inside the cabinet that held the amps.  I missed some songs at the tape flip in the first show and the encore of the second show because of that.  There are a couple other glitches I did the best I could with what I had to minimize.

The higlight to me was Alphonso Johnson's solo in "Bahama Mama".  He had a keyboard at his feet so he was playing a duet with himself.  Use caution, his playing here is not for the inferior sound system.  Bobby Cochran is really layin' it down here too.

In May 2009 I transferred the tapes to digital from My Nakamichi Dragon thru cryogenic cables to an Olympus LS-10 recording PCM at 24bit/48000hz.  This gives me a great transfer.  I then mastered the recordings to 16/44100 flac files using SoundForge 9.0.  I gave out a copy of these shows back in the '80s (the ancester of the old seed I'm sure) but have sat on the masters since then.  Finding now that the band does not object to free trade, I'm seeding it here for all to enjoy.  Other than fade-ins and -outs, I've left the recordings "whole", so you'll hear the few seconds of "Little Junkie Girl" recorded before the tape flip as well as chatter and foolin' around.  There's also some artwork.  As always, a big thanks to Candleman.
