Plant barks aggressively as the band races through an explosive Train Kept a Rollin'. Bonzo forgets some of the breaks during Nobody's Fault But Mine, robbing the song of its dynamic tension. Plant's voice is a bit rough during In the Evening, he has trouble reaching some of the higher notes. The Rain Song is fantastic. As the song ends, Plant attempts to calm the rowdy crowd so Bonzo can introduce Hot Dog. Following All My Love, Plant announces "this is one we must dedicate to Phil Carson of Atlantic Records who, if he doesn't get his shit together shortly, will be... Trampled Underfoot." Bonzo mistakenly plays through the break following the guitar solo. Plant asks the crowd to stop pushing forward prior to a lackluster Since I've Been Loving You. As the song comes to a close, Bonzo can be heard shouting "be quiet, you cunt!" at the impatient crowd. The band plods through an uninspired Achilles Last Stand. Page gets a bit lost in the arrangement toward the end of the song. Plant delivers a powerful performance during Kashmir. Stairway to Heaven features an excellent guitar solo. Bonzo fumbles through the drum outburst at the end of Rock and Roll. The band closes the show with a violent Communication Breakdown. As the song ends, Plant announces "thank you, it's nice to be... back, goodnight."                                                                         http://fp.io/m7775983/

Cologne soundboard first surfaced in 1991 on Close Shave Part 1 (Flying Disc CD 6-801) and Close Shave Part 2  (Flying Disc CD 6-802) and Pure Nostulgia (NEP-005/6) on Neptune followed.  Like almost all of the soundboards released in the late eighties and early nineties the speed was too fast.  Tarantura included the encores on Blitzkrieg Over Europe(T3CD-5) released in 1994 which also includes Frankfurt, Nurnberg and fragments from Mannheim.

The Diagrams Of Led Zeppelin released Cologne 1980 (TDOLZ Vol. 61), with the speed corrected and using the audience source to fix the gaps in “The Rain Song” from 6:14 to 7:17, in 4:24 to 6:13 in “Achillies Last Stand” and 9:20 ”Stairway To Heaven” and runs for four minutes until they come back onstage for the encores.  The editing job between the two sources is rather sloppy and abrupt.

This tour has its critics who focus upon some of the sloppiness and stale playing.  The only glaring mistakes are found in “Achillies Last Stand” where Bonham misses some cues, but there are more reasons to investigate this era than to ignore it.  These are the few shows where In Through The Outdoor material was played live, especially “All My Love” (which I don’t think has ever surfaced again in either Page/ Plant or Plant’s solo outings).

But it is their reinterpretation of their material for the “new wave” era that is fascinating.  John Paul Jones’ synthesizers replaced the mellotron and other various keyboards from previous years adds a more “contemporary” feel.  Some of it doesn’t really work like in “Since I’ve Been Loving You”.  But for “In The Evening” and “Kashmir” it works beautifully.  “Trampled Underfoot” was also used for on stage experimentation with Page exploring different timbres in the solo.

It seems this track would have been one of their big new wave numbers had the band survived.  They are careful in this show with only two simple encores, “Rock And Roll” and “Communication Breakdown”, but further shows will have some expanded, more experimental versions of “Whole Lotta Love” in the encore.

TDOLZ package Cologne 1980 in a single pocket cardboard sleeve utilizing the artwork from the old and very rare Japanese vinyl release Cologne (XL 1538/39/40).  It is a good performance even though it’s only the second stop of the tour.  This show is very enjoyable and the editing job might not be to everyone’s taste but is very well handled and makes this a title worth investigating.

HEART - Beyond Euphoria (vol.1: 1969-84)

Heart : Beyond Euphoria (vol.1: 1969-84)

2012 was a busy year
for
 Heart
They released their
14th studio album
Fanatic.
Published a
biographical book
Kicking and Dreaming:
A Story of Heart,
Soul, and Rock and Roll.
Received a lifetime
achievement recognition
by the
Kennedy Center Honors.
Got elected
to the Rock 'N' Roll
Hall of Fame.
And released a
career spanning
box set
Strange Euphoria.

The box set
was their 10th
compilation release.
Along with the
expected dose of hits
were a generous
helping of band
and solo rarities.
Since the record
companies have worked
the hits compilations
extensively,
it's time to feature
the rarities.
Over the years
Ann & Nancy Wilson
have collectively
and individually
released and contributed
a number of songs
that never turned up
on any Heart albums
or solo works.

We will be covering
Heart
in a 4 volume project.
This first installment
will be the early years
and the original
Mushroom Records
release of what
was to be the band's
second album
Magazine.
Details on the latter
have been retold
time and again.
Suffice it to say
the band was not happy
with their contract
or Mushroom in 1977.
They ditched
the project and
signed with Epic Records.
The album was
released against
their protests.
A legal battle ensued
and Heart compromised
to rework the album
and re-release it
in 1978.
These were the original
mixes that Mushroom
released and then pulled
from stores/radio airplay.
