REVIEW
by Eduardo Rivadavia
Neo-folk quartet Strangefolk continues to peddle its breezy, upbeat style on its third album, 2000's A Great Long While. Another strong cohesive effort from the Vermont natives, it once again allows Dave Matthews, Spin Doctors, and Blues Traveler influences to peek through the group's own very deft and distinctive compositional touch. With its deceptively simple arrangements and occasionally outré instrumentation (note the apropos sax on "Mama" and horns backing "Pawn"), the band's carefully crafted songs quote a variety of styles, including electrified alt-rock ("Chasing Away"), reggae ("Sinner"), discreet psychedelia ("Blue & Grey"), and swamp blues ("I Tell Myself"). All the while, the musicians remain true to their group's core sound, making this a highly recommended listen for fans of challenging jam band material.

BIOGRAPHY
by Mike DaRonco
Formed together by two college students from the University of Vermont, Reid Genauer (vocals/ guitar) and Jon Trafton (guitar) spent the first year together under the name Stranefolk while performing in pubs and coffee houses all throughout campus. Armed with only their acoustic guitars and distortion pedals, Genauer and Trafton eventually recruited Erik Glockler on bass and Luke Smith on drums, fulfilling the line-up as a four piece. With their own style of merging bluegrass, folk, rock and blues, Strangefolk had the chance to document this in the studio and eventually self-releasing their self-titled first album in 1994, followed by "Lore" the next year. After a hefty touring schedule across the United States in support of these two albums, Flat Earth Records took notice and put out "Weightless in Water" in 1998.

REVIEW
BY Jason Gossard
Coast to Coast, is the first release to showcase the current Strangefolk line-up. New keyboardist Don Scott lends quite a bit to the sound, taking some of the soloing duties away from guitarist Jon Trafton. But while this release emphasizes the group's live jamming prowess, the band's true strength still lies in the
songwriting. The highlight of the album is "Anchor," which, apart from the country throwaway "Get You Down," is the shortest song on the disc. It is in "Anchor" where all of Strangefolk's strengths come to the fore. It is a strong rhythm-based song flavored with melodic guitar, a strong vocal presence, and a solo section that allows the soloist to stretch but not extend too far. The song sounds like a mutant hybrid of Marshall Tucker's "Can't You See" and Level Forty Two's "Something About You," and has the
potential to be a AOR radio station mainstay.
The most obvious influence heard here, made explicit in the "Cocaine"-based "Come On Down", is Eric Clapton circa the mid-'70. Clapton's live shows during this time essentially consisted of three and four minute pop songs expanded into eight and nine minute guitar feasts. At the core of each Clapton song, and similarly at the core of each Strangefolk track included here, was a three minute pop song stuffed to the gills with lengthy solos.
Unfortunately, neither the guitarists nor the keyboardist in Strangefolk have Clapton's chops, and thus the results of each extended solo, and thus each song, are mixed.
Like Clapton, Strangefolk works best when the rhythm section is laidback and mellow, and not too aggressive. "Leave A Message", "In Deep", "Come On Down", and the aforementioned "Anchor" take the laidback approach, and as a result, are the better tracks on the album. The opening "First Time" fails to catch my interest, and comes across as a clichpop song with an unnecessary jam. "Get You Down" sounds like "Big River" until the vocals come in, and then it sounds like "Too Much Nashville", whose trite lyrics fail to redeem the song. The closing "Water" introduces a little funk into the mix, but with not too impressive results (though the last couple minutes of the jam do contain the most interesting improvisation on the album).
However, all in all, while the musicians all contribute competent and, at times, inspired performances, but none of the solos explore any new or particularly surprising territory. At its core, Strangefolk is a solid rock band whose members can play their instruments and have the ability to write a catchy hit or two.

REVIEW
by Hal Horowitz
Recording predominantly instrumental soul-jazz Beatles' covers isn't a unique concept; both George Benson and Booker T. & the MG's attempted a similar concept to varying degrees of success in the early '70s. But Soulive strips the sound down to a three-piece organ combo and swings its way through 11 Beatles tunes, including rockers such as "Help" and "Day Tripper," jazzing them up without losing the hummable melodies that makes this timeless music still resonate. Despite the album's title that wittily takes the Soulive moniker and combines it with the Beatles iconic recording, there are only two tunes from Rubber Soul. Regardless, this is a frisky reimagining of Fab Four's gems that stays true to its source yet adapts the music to Soulive's distinctive soul-jazz groove. At first glance, the set list seems somewhat unlikely for interpretations in this style. Surely "Revolution" and "I Want You (She's so Heavy)" don't look like obvious candidates for a Memphis-styled R&B makeover. But Soulive uses its basic organ-guitar-drum setup with few overdubs to effortlessly soar through these tunes without a hint of pretension. Guitarist Eric Krasno handles most of the "vocal" parts, walking a fine line between rock and jazz, especially on the riff-heavy "Day Tripper," without slipping into either. Organist Neal Evans provides muscular yet nimble support, often taking the place of what were the background vocals of the originals. The solos are generally kept short, sharp, and tight, unlike other jazz covers that use a song's melody as a jumping-off place for lengthy improvisation that often strays too far from the tunefulness of the source material. Rather, the trio keeps the Beatles' songwriting abilities foremost in the presentation, although when they do wander off the page on short jams -- as in "Taxman" -- but it's never for long. Like the Liverpool lads who intuitively meshed together, Soulive's members interlock to yield results greater than the sum of its parts on this successful tribute that combines the Beatles sense of excitement, imagination. and musical exploration with a funky, down-home R&B/jazz groove.

Brothers Alan and Neal Evans, on drums and Hammond B-3 organ, respectively, form two-thirds of the soul/groove trio Soulive. Rounding out the group is Eric Krasno on guitar. The band was formed in the late '90s when all three members were under 25. However, each already had a substantial background in the jam band scene. Alan and Neal are former members of Moon Boot Lover, and Alan also played with the Greyboy Allstars. Krasno founded the super-funky Lettuce, a wildly popular Boston-based band.

Though originally from Vermont, Soulive is essentially Boston-based as well. The band toured with and opened for a number of notables (including John Scofield, Maceo Parker, Los Lobos, Derek Trucks, and Robben Ford) before headlining their own shows and releasing their introductory EP, Get Down, in 1999. Their debut full-length release, Turn It Out, followed the next year. Doin' Something, featuring John Scofield, was issued in March 2001.

Soulive is all about danceable, organ-driven instrumental groove-jazz. Their success is a result of fusing the soul-jazz of the past with a modern hip-hop feel. Krasno's spidery yet very direct guitar lines recall Grant Green. The rhythmic concepts employed date back to those learned from artists such as James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Sly Stone.
Their first release was a self-pressed EP entitled Get Down! The band's full-length debut, Turn It Out (featuring John Scofield), was released on the Velour label in 2000. That release generated such a buzz that they were promptly picked up by Blue Note, which released Doin' Something in early 2001. About a year later, Next was released, followed by Soulive in 2003. Breakout appeared from Concord in 2005, while a series of individual concerts were made available on Instant Live Records in 2004 and 2006, followed by No Place Like Soul on Stax in 2007. In 2009, the band marked its tenth anniversary with the release of the studio effort Up Here. A year later, they delivered a Beatles covers album, Rubber Soulive. In 2012, Soulive paid tribute to soul-jazz guitarist Melvin Sparks with the album Spark!

As a leading voice on the music scene in Austin, TX, guitarist Monte Montgomery slowly gained national recognition for his amazing dexterity, fluid harmonics, percussive dynamics, and melodic sensibility. Montgomery won his fourth consecutive title as best acoustic guitarist at the 2001 Austin Music Awards at the SXSW Festival. Songs written by Montgomery in early 2001 followed suit from his previous releases, 1998's 1st and Repair and 1999's Mirror, in that they all focus on storytelling, a quality he derived from listening to Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and Bob Dylan. "Tug of War," a song written in 2001, was about the give and take in relationships. "All on Me" started as a slow ballad, then transformed into a guitar anthem. Montgomery continued to tour in 2001 with his quartet -- bassist Lonnie Trevino, drummer Phil Bass, and percussionist Mike Urdy -- performing songs loosely based on his experiences or gathered from his understanding of and observations of other people. Montgomery's sandy voice and rapid fingerpicking gained him comparisons to Mark Knopfler and Bruce Cockburn, but his true heritage lay in the tradition of Texas guitarists B.W. Stevenson, Shake Russell, and Guy Clark, whom he discovered in his youth. National acclaim started to come his way after appearances on PBS music television shows, such as Austin City Limits, CD Highway, and Texas Music Cafe. His growing talents as a guitarist and songwriter came from the understanding of melody and rhythm he gained from hearing pop icons Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, and the Neville Brothers. Montgomery's journey to guitar stardom started in the Hill Country hamlet near Fredericksburg, TX, where his mom (Maggie Montgomery, herself a folk-country singer and guitarist in Luckenbach, TX) let him strum her guitar while she fingered the chords. Montgomery lived out of the back of his mother's pickup for a while. He played for tips and paid a lot of dues early in his career. He and his mother used to hang out at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas where they met a lot of songwriters. David Montgomery, his dad, factored into his development, too. Monte Montgomery was born in Birmingham, AL, where his father, a choir director, took him to church and introduced him to gospel singers. A lot of his apprenticeship during the '80s took place in San Antonio, where he honed his skills by performing cover songs in cafes and honky-tonks. He commuted to Austin to perform his original songs. Before long, he became a mainstay on the music scene there. After signing with Heart Music to record his first two CDs, Montgomery began to rise in popularity. In 1998, Montgomery moved to Austin. The songs on his 2000 CD, Mirror, ranged from the flashy guitar style on "Hopin' That You'd Slow Down" to the beautiful lyricism of the ballad "Magnolia." Well into 2001, Montgomery brought both parental forces to bear in the rich harmonic interplay of his voice and his guitar.
