THE GRATEFUL DEAD - Dave’s Picks Volume 7

Grateful Dead – Dave’s Picks Volume 7 (2013)

GratefulDead  Dave’s Picks Vol. 7 feature a recording of the Grateful Dead’s performance at the Horton Fieldhouse at Illinois State University from April 24, 1978. A description of the show reads:
“Grateful Dead may have wrapped up the final show of the first leg of their 1978 Spring Tour in a town called Normal, but this night was anything but!
Yes, on this fine evening, the Rhythm Devils shook the room with an exotic tribal assault. Bob found his groove with the slide guitar, contrasting nicely with Keith’s block chording, Phil’s thundering and swooping bass-lines, Jerry’s articulated leads.
Heck, they even dabbled in disco, teasing the audience with an unmistakable riffs from “Stayin’ Alive.” What does all this juiced-up, cranked to the max, sonic savagery add up to? Top-level deliveries of fan favorites like “The Music Never Stopped,” “Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain,” and “Ramble On Rose,” a jungle-vibed 14+ minute Rhythm Devils interlude, an over-the-top take on Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” and much, much more.”

DRIVIN N' CRYIN - Songs From The Psychedelic Time Clock

Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ – Songs from the Psychedelic Time Clock EP (2013)

Drivin' N' CryinIn 2012, the decades-running Southern rock act Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ announced plans to release four separate EPs over a 12-month period rather than offer up a single new full-length. These EPs, released on the band’s own New! Records imprint, would focus on one aspect of the group’s sound per release, with the first chapter, Songs from the Laundromat, drenched in deep-fried Southern boogie rock and Songs About Cars, Space and the Ramones exploring punk influences.
Third EP Songs from the Psychedelic Time Clock follows with religious reworkings of the early garage and ’60s psych sound. Beginning with the loving homage to the genre “The Little Record Store Just Around the Corner,” the band rides a Seeds/Count Five-inspired riff and rumble while vocalist/songwriter Kevin Kinney sings about finding psychedelic records in the welcoming arms of the local record shop. Throughout the brief six tracks, the band channels the third-eye-opened trips of the 13th Floor Elevators on the poetic “Sometimes the Rain (Is Just the Rain)” and gentle sunshiny Beatles and Byrds-isms on “Upside Down Round and Round,” and even gets into some of Hawkwind’s dark biker rock energy in places. While the instrumental title track drags the short-lived collection down a little bit, the majority of Songs from the Psychedelic Time Clock smack with the excitement and clarity of the two EPs that preceded it. From the Iggy-esque yelps to the Dukes of the Stratosphear-caliber re-envisioning of the golden era of psychedelic sounds, Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ display a detailed knowledge for the music they pay tribute to here, as well as a profound love.

JOHNNY WINTER AND - Live at the Fillmore East 10/3/70

Johnny Winter And – Live at the Fillmore East 10/3/70 [Limited Edition] (2013)

Johnny Winter For decades now, we’ve thought of Live Johnny Winter And as the seminal live JW document from the early part of his career. That record, taken from performances at the Fillmore East and from a gig in Florida, was comprised mainly of rock & roll covers and a couple of originals. As a single LP it clocked in at just under 40 minutes. It smokes, but not as hard as this set, recorded a week or two before at the Fillmore East in 1970. Sony let Collectors’ Choice take some prime stuff from the vaults for this one. This is the Johnny Winter And group simply tearing it up on a selection of originals and covers. The sound quality is phenomenal and the energy on this gig not only rivals that of the previous record, it leaves it in the dust. For listeners who are casting a wary eye at this review, one need only compare the two versions of “Good Morning Little School Girl,” which are only a second different in length. That said, the symbiotic interplay between Winter and second lead guitarist Rick Derringer (who went by his real name of Zehringer then) on this version sounds like a switchblade duel. The other two cuts that are duplicated, “It’s My Own Fault” and “Mean Town Blues,” are both much longer on this gig. The former clocks in at 22 minutes and the latter at 18. The improvisation and guitar challenges are voluminous, wildly energetic, and creative. “Highway 61 Revisited” here contains the slide guitar workout from Winter we hoped for on the Second Winter album and never got. The furious abandon he plays with is unchallenged on any of his live records; it’s Elmore James by way of Mike Bloomfield with Winter’s gnarly single-string fills, full of distortion and barely controlled volume. The version of “Mean Town Blues” on this set becomes the definitive one — in large part because of Derringer’s complementary counterpoint lead work — as does “It’s My Own Fault,” which transcends its slow tempo and becomes something wholly other. The closing read of Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” is only 4:33, but makes one wish it were three times that long. Its fiery, steel-melting intensity features some of the most vicious slide guitar on record to come out of the ’70s. The only track that really doesn’t impress here is “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,” but not because its performance is substandard. It’s simply that in comparison to all the brilliant spontaneity and furious energy on the rest of the set, it feels too controlled. But that’s hardly a complaint. Even though Derringer wrote it, this one blows away the JWA studio version or Derringer’s own hit single take. This set blows the stuff in Winter’s own officially released bootleg series away, and becomes his definitive live recording, hands down. — AMG

The Rainbow Theatre show was first broadcasted by the BBC2 as part of the Old Grey Whistle Test on the 27 may 1974. It was aired simultaneously on stereo FM radio and on mono TV. This was one of the earliest stereo radio broadcasts, and the first simultaneous TV/radio broadcast of a "rock" concert.
It was repeated on the 9 oct 1980 on BBC2 as well. ALL the previous copies that are in circulation (known as "Over The Rainbow" and "Under The Rainbow") are from the 1980 rebroadcast.

"Over the Rainbow" is a bad quality stereo recording (according to the Hayward website : [Over the Rainbow] sounds as though it could've been taken straight from a notoriously bad-sounding LP). "Under the Rainbow" is better, but it's mono.

What's more, they are very incomplete. "Warm Love" was only aired on the initial BBC 1974 broadcast and dropped after that from future broadcasts. "Wild Night", "I Paid the price", "Saint Dominic's Preview" and "Gloria" have never been broadcasted on BBC but only on a 1980 Dutch broadcast (WN) or on a 1974 Irish broadcast by RTE (IPTP, SDP, G). Hence, those 5 tracks seldom (or never) circulated before.

Same issues with the videos/DVDs previously circulating : they all come from the 1980 repeat, have a medium to very bad image and sound quality, and all are mono.

SAW did a fantastic work in researching and finding good recordings of both the original 1974 video and stereo radio broadcasts.
The rare "lost" tracks were unearthed from Harm's archives. Their sound quality is much lower than the other sources, that's why they are given as "bonus".

The challenge was then to remaster the sound from old audio tape sources (first generation from stereo off-air, but recorded onto low grade cassettes as most people did at the time) and to synchronise it to the video that originaly had a bad mono sound. Of course, the audio tape had a dramaticaly bad pitch and a very irregular speed, so it had to be adjusted every 30 seconds. I now know what purgatory looks like.
The incomplete "Wild Night" video that came separated was then merged to the BBC source, without cutting the end of the song as it originaly was.

So here it is for you : the most complete and best quality (untill we find a reel-to-reel recording, or Van releases it) package of both the video and audio versions, in full stereo.
