Part of a multiple-night stand recorded in Los Angeles over the 1978 July 4th holiday weekend, these tracks come from the first US tour America undertook as a duo. After nearly seven years of chart-topping success, founding member Dan Peek departed to pursue life as a born again Christian. Rather than replace Peek, Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley opted to work as a two-man group, and these recordings are the result of their initial shows.

This recording features a strong mix of material that was new at the time, as well as an assortment of the band's greatest hits. Among them are "Riverside," "I Need You," "Daisy Jane," "Sandman," and "Tin Man." There is more than enough to experience the magic of America during this period throughout this hour and a half-plus set. They end the show with their most well known song, "A Horse With No Name."

Source:
SBD > Various Transfers / Edits (see original info attached) > FLAC
Also contained part of Matrix (08-29-68)

01 - That's It For The Other One (12.52)
02 - Dark Star (15.33) >
03 - St Stephen (4.40) >
04 - The Eleven (10.53) (abrupt cut)
05 - Death Don't Have No Mercy (8.02)
06 - Alligator > Drums > Jam > (17.59) >
07 - Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks) (13.00) >
08 - Feedback (3.11)

Changes made (Nero 7 7 8):
Cross-mixed all tracks (80:20)
- Fixed 'hole' in middle of stereo image, instruments clearer, noise reduced
Reduced Right channel by 10-15% to centre stereo image
Fixed balance changes during tracks
Fixed a few minor digi-glitches
Smoothed out transitions between tracks
Volume increase +1dB
...then (Nero 8)
Phase correction +0.03msec
Reduced LH level to 95% to further centre stereo image
Re-tracked
Added flac tags using the included Folder.jpg artwork

and then fixed clipping and balance swings of track 05

Not fixed:
Abrupt cut at the end of The Eleven (tr04)
Consistent (not too high) hiss throughout - couldn't get a noise print that worked
Did not use the poorer sounding Matrix tracks from original post

Quality: An amazing A++ considering the vintage
---------------------------------------------------

The original post sounded really good, but had a typical late 60's mix with instruments
extreme left / right plus a hole in the middle of the stereo image and also phasey /
boomy bass, all of which I fixed (details above).

The last 3 tracks are also released as official bonus tracks on Anthem of the Sun also
on the offical "Two from the Vault" of the next night's performance as a 2007 bonus
third disk of, so I only posted tracks 01-05, but I have clearance from GEMS that these
are OK to include. I have also taken the opportunity to fix some issues on track05, but
have kept the original torrent and file names so if you have that, already, then you can
join in around 50%.

I've also included a 2sec audience overlap called 'Alligator (intro)' so you can edit in
the (slghtly better sounding) official tracks instead if you have the minor editing or
cross-fade skills,

Now you have a truly wonderful quality recording and (IMHO) the best 'classic' Dead
performance that I've heard....

On the tape the Saint Stephen > Death Dont sequence was placed after the Dark Star medley and
before Alligator. The songs were placed the same sequence as Dead Base lists the show.
This recording is in stereo throughout.

Mastering Notes:
- Reel changes spliced between dark Star and Cryptical and in second verse of The Other One
- Left and right channels were normalized to 2 db before mastering plugins were applied.

Geetarz Comments:
Recorded in Boston's "Metro Club", the first of a two night stand. First public performance of "It's in the Way That You Use It."
This was the band many of us refer to as "The Dream Team".  Paring the band down to four pieces, and putting them in a club setting, really changed the vibe.  It's a wholly different feel than an arena show with a big band.
Oh, did I mention ... it's a killer close-miked soundboard as well!
Even if you already have a copy of this title, this may be a nice upgrade for you, direct from the masters with known lineage.
Also, the original scans I did "back in the day" weren't very good (because my scanner, wasn't very good) so for this torrent I have included new scans at 300 DPI, including scans of the discs.          http://fp.io/c6571aa9/
