PHISH - VENTURA
Phish – Ventura (2013)
6-CD box set featuring two complete live shows, recorded July 30, 1997 and July 20, 1998 at Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, California + bonus CD featuring ten tracks handpicked from Phish’s March 21, 1993 Ventura Theatre show.
July 30, 1997 was Phish’s first Ventura stop since Trey learned to surf nearby in 1993, and both the 1997 and 1998 Ventura Fairgrounds setlists were laced with coastal themes referencing the scenic locale. Ventura ‘97 featured a number of must-hear performances including a bass-driven, syncopated Wolfman’s Brother > Chalk Dust Torture, a deep and spacey Stash and a gnarly Character Zero in set I. Peak improvisation of the highest order defined set II with a Free > David Bowie > Cities > David Bowie combination that dominated the show’s second half with some of the summer’s biggest jams. Add in Weigh (played just twice that summer), the first West Coast Piper and a blazing cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Fire and the result was a steaming cauldron of patient funk and cacophonous shredding that defined summer 1997 Phish.
On July 20, 1998 Phish again encountered Ventura’s breezy oceanside. Ventura ’98 was characterized by some new songs, some bustouts and some wicked jams played with a democratic group-mind that conjured a stellar Bathtub Gin opener, a new arrangement of Water In The Sky, the swinging funk of The Moma Dance and a hairy Split Open And Melt set I closer. Set II exploded with a crucial bass-and-drums-fueled Drowned > Makisupa Policeman pairing that utilized Page’s synth stylings to seamlessly blend rock and reggae. A concentrated Maze led to a perfectly placed, self-referential Sea And Sand – played for the first time since 12/31/95 and only the third time ever. An inspired Prince Caspian carved the way into the Harry Hood set II closer. The encore was the Phish debut of Sexual Healing as Trey played drums and Fish, to the crowd’s delight, sang Marvin Gaye’s tale of capsizing in rising waves of love.
A funky, experimental Halley’s Comet capped the show as the band left the stage one-by-one to waves of digital delay that swept the beachside fairgrounds.
The Ventura box set captures the feel of two magical nights of Phish – recorded by Paul Languedoc to multitrack tape, mixed by Jon Altschiller and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. — jambase

Comments (from Willmot's page):
Very good sound quality, possibly from a soundboard source. The sound mix is good but the crowd noise and guitar are on one side with the bass and drums on the other. Overall, the sound is excellent compared to the first volume (above) even if the voice and bass guitar are slightly saturated. Great show!

Comments:
Mid Valley Records released a mammoth 24-disc set, "Exotic Summer," in the summer of 2011 that largely focuses on Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood's European summer 2010 tour. Several of these (at least Birmingham, London, and Antwerp) appear to have originated from sources that were originally posted on DIME shortly after the shows took place; however, at least five of the versions have not appeared on the larger torrent sites to date, and may be new to the broader trading community. The core of the set consists of ten European shows between May 18th - June 13th, 2010, with two "bonus" recordings from the U.S. tour the previous summer (Philadelphia 6/12/09 and Washington 6/13/09). The sound quality of the 12 audience recordings ranges between good and great; the two weakest are the "bonus" shows from the U.S., but all are extremely listenable. The set was distributed in deluxe packaging, scans of which are included here.
This torrent features discs 23 & 24 of the "Exotic Summer" set, an excellent audience recording overall and a source that is (I believe) new to DIME. There were two versions posted previously -- one was marginal quality, and the other had cuts in the first and last tracks ... this sounds better than both, and is complete. This version has a good mix, full dynamic range, and perhaps the most vocals you will hear in any of the dates on this set. There is no crowd chatter that I could find, though periodic phasing as the taper shifted positions. Excellent recording, and probably an upgrade for those (like me) who built their EC/SW collection entirely on the torrent sites. Relative to the other recordings in this set, it's got a very muscular, full low-end.
Setlist-wise, you'll note some songs that were dropped prior to the 2010 tour -- "No Face, No Name, No Number" was dropped in favor of other tracks (I'm not a fan of this song, so I would rate this as an improvement), and the second half of the show features a nice mellow version of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out." Of note, I believe this is the last "Little Wing" of the tour, which is a shame.
This set first appeared as a single large posting on HungerCity by "MainlineFL" in July 2011, and has been broken into 12 individual segments to comply with DIME rules. Many thanks to him for the original share. (Note: Those who have already completed this download on HC can point the torrent to their existing folder and will resume at about 99%. After you download the show-specific artwork, info, and md5 signature, you will be able to begin seeding.)

Notes:
A couple of days after Paul Simon joined Paul McCartney at his Landmine Benefit, Macca returned the favor by sitting in at Paul Simon's show atthe Greek Theater for one song. It's a fun duet.
Otherwise, this is a pretty representative setlist from Simon's summer 2001 tour, which was more or less a shortened version of what he played in his fall 2000 theater tour. I believe the only song in this set that didn't appear in 2000 is the final encore, "Loves Me Like A Rock."
Nonetheless, this is great for anyone who enjoys live Paul Simon in any context, and worth having for die-hard Beatlescollectors. The recording is a very good soundboard. It is probably from a commercial bootleg.
This is comparable to the Beacon soundboard in terms of quality; probably not as lush a mix as the Hollywood Bowl show.

FRANK ZAPPA - A Token of His Extreme
Frank Zappa – A Token of His Extreme (2013)
The first official release of this previously difficult to find 1974 video finds Frank Zappa and his then-Mothers charging through an hour’s worth of material, live in the studio. His extraordinarily talented five piece is a slimmed down version of the Live at the Roxy band and the same musicians who played on fan favorite One Size Fits All from ’75. Animation on one song is courtesy of the amazing Bruce Bickford whose bizarre and intricate stop motion “Claymation” perfectly reflects Zappa’s dizzying sense of tempos and twisted vision.
It’s a treat to see crazed singer/reed player Napoleon Murphy Brock at the peak of his weirdness, clowning around while playing untamed tenor sax. Along with percussionist Ruth Underwood, bassist Tom Fowler, drummer Chester Thompson and keyboardist/singer George Duke, this is arguably Zappa’s finest conglomeration of musicians, which is saying plenty. The special effects are primitive, some of the quick cut
editing is annoying and almost impossible to watch. At nearly 12 minutes, “Room Service” is hampered by impromptu foolishness between Zappa and Brock. But this wouldn’t be a typical Frank Zappa gig without his proclivity for excess, which only adds to its charm.
A very cool extra of the Mike Douglas Show from 1976 has Zappa explaining that the video—originally shot as a TV show—was rejected by every American network and syndicator yet was successfully shown in prime time in Europe. Douglas’ other guests were comedian JJ Walker and Kenny Rogers who were probably blown away when FZ soloed with Douglas’ studio orchestra backing him on a jaw dropping instrumental “Black Napkins,” a stunning performance that alone is worth the price of this DVD.
The audio is cleanly remixed stereo and even if the video is on the grainy side, this is a must own for every Zappa fan and a terrific place for newcomers to get a taste of his prodigious talents. — American Songwriter
