ROCKPILE - SECONDS OF PLEASURE

Rockpile - Seconds Of Pleasure (2004)
 April 27, 2004 (Orig. Release: 1980) | 387 MB
Genre: Rock, Rock'n'Roll | Label: Sony

Though Rockpile managed only one, nigh-perfect album at the height of the '80s new wave boom, its members--Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner, and Terry Williams--had played together in various incarnations, in some instances for over a decade: Edmunds and drummer Williams had been in the '60s power trio Love Sculpture; all had played on Lowe's '78 album Jesus of Cool and Edmunds's '79 collection Repeat When Necessary. But Seconds of Pleasure became their most complete and satisfying pop statement--if their ironic swan song, as well. This newly remastered collection features the complete original album, as informed and vibrant a tribute to American rockabilly and R&B roots (with an amped-up take of Joe Tex's "If Sugar Was as Sweet as You" and inviting reworkings of Gene Chandler's "Teacher Teacher" and Chuck Berry's obscure "Oh What a Thrill") as any contemporary group has ever managed--especially considering three quarters of the material is either Rockpile originals or contemporary compositions, like "Wrong Again" by Squeeze songwriters/mainstays Difford and Tilbrook. The generous slate of bonus tracks features all four acoustic, live-in-the studio tracks from the Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds Sing the Everly Brothers tribute EP distributed with initial pressings of the LP; two fine live BBC recordings from '77; a cover of Graham Parker's "Back to Schooldays"; a band original, "They Called It Rock"; and a blistering live rendition of Parker's "Crawling from the Wreckage" from one of the band's last appearances together at the Concert for Kampuchea. Though Lowe may now downplay them as "a posh bar band" who "specialized in playing Chuck Berry music four times faster than anyone else," Rockpile was truly one of the great rock bands of their--or any--era.

JEFF HEALEY - LAST CALL

The first two posthumous Jeff Healey albums, Mess of Blues (which appeared only days after his death in 2008) and Songs from the Road (2009), focused on his blues-rock guitar playing, the basis of his renown, even though he had spent much of the last decade of his life performing and recording in the early jazz styles of the first three decades of the 20th century, and often playing the trumpet. Last Call, a studio recording drawn from sessions held in February 2007, returns to the jazz format of previous albums Among Friends, Adventures in Jazzland, and It's Tight Like That. But instead of playing with his band the Jazz Wizards, Healey is accompanied by only two fellow musicians, pianist/clarinetist Ross Wooldridge of that group, and violinist Drew Jurecka. That is, they accompany him when he has any accompaniment at all. Sometimes, Healey is alone, or rather, he is the only musician, even if there are multiple instruments. The closing track, "Some of These Days," features two guitars, trumpet, and vocals, but they're all Healey, overdubbing himself. Annotator Colin Bray, another member of the Jazz Wizards, attests to Healey's love of early jazz, as demonstrated by his extensive collection of 78 rpm records, and, like its predecessors in this vein, Last Call clearly is a labor of love by an aficionado intent on replicating the sound of a musical style he reveres. Nor is it without accomplishment. When Healey and Jurecka dig into the guitar/violin duet "The Wildcat," they sound for all the world like Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, which is exactly what they are aiming for. Healey is a less impressive trumpet player, although he manages to approximate the ‘20s style he's after. He is also an adequate vocalist, but not really a stylist capable of putting his own stamp on the songs of, say, Hoagy Carmichael ("Hong Kong Blues"), or Bing Crosby ("Pennies from Heaven"). So, like Healey's other jazz albums, Last Call is something more than a busman's holiday, but something less than a major artistic statement. - allmusic.com

DIXIE PEACH began playing in 1973 when five kindred spirits decided to team up to create an energetic style of southern blues rock that features cutting edge slide guitar work, intense vocals, and stylistic keyboards. The band honed its talent by barnstorming the southeastern U.S. over a span of several years and serving as an opening act for Joe Walsh, Blue Oyster Cult, Ted Nugent, Roy Bucanon, and others.

Although DIXIE PEACH is a unique band, the influence of classic southern rock and blues artists is evident. Original material is written by the band. Each band member is a passionate, skilled musician. In October 2002, guitarist IRA STANLEY earned the ''Best Guitarist'' award at a competition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum sponsored by Gibson Guitars.

This CD, BUTTA, includes six original songs that feature creative lyrics, intense lead and slide guitar work, and a hard-driving rhythm section. Also featured on BUTTA, are song tributes to artists that have had a significant influence on the band. These tributes include the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix.
