BIOGRAPHY
by Jason Ankeny
The self-described "polyethnic cajun slamgrass" group Leftover Salmon formed in Colorado in the early '90s as a merger of two area acts, the Left Hand String Band and the Salmonheads. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist/washboard player Vince Herman, banjoist Mark Vann, mandolinist/guitarist Drew Emmit, bassist Tye North and drummer Michael Wooten, the band's good-timey earned a grassroots following on the festival circuit and resulted in their 1993 self-released debut Bridges to Bert. Ask the Fish, a 1995 live effort recorded at Boulder, Colorado's Fox Theatre, helped Leftover Salmon earn a deal with the Hollywood label, which in 1997 released the group's major label bow Euphoria. The Nashville Sessions followed two years later. Upon issuing the Live album in spring 2002, Leftover Salmon experienced some restructuring within the band. North and Wooten were no longer part of Leftover Salmon. Greg Garrison stepped in to play bass, Jose Martinez was added on drums and newcomer Bill McKay joined on keyboards.

The wicked combo of "Statesboro Blues">"Walk On Gilded Splinters">"Who’s Been Talking" gets this show off to a roaring start, and there’s no letting up. The ABB’s first show at this brand new outdoor venue was an all-out jam fest and one of the most underrated shows of the year. How can you beat the combination of "Rockin’ Horse">"Desdemona">"The Same Thing," the last two with saxophonist extraordinaire Ron Holloway -- 35 minutes of untouchable jamming right there. "Mountain Jam" brackets both ends of this show, with something in between for everybody. Check out the bluesy version of the rare "****r’s Roll" and the longest "Hoochie Coochie Man" of the year.

* DISC ONE (56:32):

1. Mountain Jam (13:11)
2. One Way Out (6:04)

Horn lovers, rejoice! The Asbury Jukes horns joined the band for a memorable sit-in at this intimate performance, which makes it a natural choice for a "West’s Best" selection. The versions of "Into the Mystic," "The Same Thing" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" really benefit from the extra firepower of a horn section, and sax man Ron Holloway lends a hand to a smoking version of "Desdemona." An epic "Dreams>Liz Reed" combo features amazing guitar work from Derek and Warren, and on "Liz Reed" Holloway gets another chance to show why he has been such a frequent guest with the band.

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND-
New England Dodge Music Center,
Hartford, Conneticut
8/21/2005

From the powerful "Les Brers" opener, the band was hittin’ the note this night. ABB drummer Jaimoe lives in Connecticut, and the band always gets great support there. "Can’t Lose What You Never Had" appears for only the third time this summer, and the equally rare ".44 Blues" has a great, swampy groove to it. "Instrumental Illness" gets a good workout, and check out the extended version of "Black Hearted Woman." The double encore of "Melissa" and "Whipping Post" really puts this show over the top!

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND-
Common Ground Music Festival,
Adado Riverfront Park,
Lansing, Michigan
7/12/2005

As part of a week-long festival, the ABB rocked out to a big crowd in downtown Lansing. These were the only versions of "Firing Line" and "Every Hungry Woman" played on the July tour, and both feature strong jams at the end. The real treat here, however, is "Key To the Highway" with bluesman Larry McCray adding some funky, swampy guitar licks. A triple-headed blues guitar onslaught! Warren’s soulful take on the Howlin’ Wolf classic "Who’s Been Talking" has never sounded better than it does here. Also, this "Jessica" really goes places and is not to be missed!

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Thanks to Dubwise, for sharing his audience tape of the Jazz Is Dead 4-21-98 Cafe Tomo show, and to Saoshya, for remastering his material. After much debate here on dime about the correct lineage of this show, I had a feeling of deja vu. I lived in Arcata for a year (2001-2002), and was at the infamous Deep Banana Blackout show at Cafe Tomo the night when the Visitor Center/Environmental Center burned down. I left Arcata in 2002, and I was gifted with a few cassettes from a good friend. I checked all those dusty old cassettes that I haven't looked at in 7 years - sure enough, one is labeled "Jazz is Dead - Cafe Tomo 4-21-98 - 0 Gen SBD." This source cassette contained the full show, and part of the encore (Dark Star, but it cuts out). It is an honor and a priveledge to be able to recover a lost Arcata gem, and to be able to share it with the world, particularly the Arcata Dead Community. Much thanks to the original unknown taper of this Sound Board source, and I would like to dedicate this recovered nugget to my old Arcata crew, must of whom are still there. If you happen to see Josh, Nathan, Uncle Bob, Robin, or Becky who now lives in Berkeley, buy them a beer! Without them, I never would have been in Arcata, and who knows what would have happened to this show! Much love, and I hope to be in Northern California again someday!

This was transferred from a Maxell XLII "Position High" 90 minute cassette tape to a CD (wav files) via a TEAC RW-CD22 Recorder, which is a stereo component. The sound was not altered in any way. I had to track this by ear, and the tracking is off, I can tell you that for sure. Feel free to retrack this and share it with everyone! Oh, and if you see T. Lavitz, tell him to update his info - if you listen to the beginning someone mentions "Giving a Warm Humboldt Welcome" and before the encore someone in the band mentions "Arcata, CA, Thank You Very Very Much!" It's all good, we just need to keep everything straight!

peace, willie4prez

Merl Saunders opened, but I wasn't set up in time to record.

Taper notes:
Just a few weeks ago I hit the Widespread Panic show here at Radio City Music Hall....and it got me thinking about Jimmy Herring and how amazing he is......which got me thinking about this Jazz Is Dead show from a 2 night/4 show run at The Bottom Line.  I remember that I decided to head down for this at the very last minute (Bottom Line was not a particularly friendly venue, but it was really intimate, and if I recall this ticket was somewhat expensive).  Anyway I got in during Merl Saunders' opening set and hooked up with Jason, who was already set up.  We removed his mics from his stand (Neumann KM184s, I believe) and put mine up instead.

I'm so glad I did get into the show because this band just blew the roof off of the place.  Let's talk about the members who where in this original lineup of the band -- all MONSTER players:  Billy Cobham -- kickass jazz drummer and alumnus of one of Miles Davis' bands as well as legendary the jazz fusion Mahavishnu Orchestra, and basically worth the price of admission on his own.  Just one listen to his solo (track 5) on this recording will shake the foundations of what you believe a drummer can do!  Alphonso Johnson -- former bassist from another legendary jazz fusion act -- Weather Report, one of the first Chapman Stick players, former member of one of Bob Weir's solo projects (the Midnights) and just a few years after this show was hired as (as far as I'm aware) the only bassist to ever take Phil's place in a post-Grateful Dead incarnation (when Phil and Bobby were fighting, I believe) in their tour as The Other Ones in 2000.  He definitely brings the funk (if not as much of the subtlety as Phil Lesh would contribute) and heavy heavy grooves to this band -- just listen to the groove he lays down in Scarlet Begonias.  T. Lavitz, who I'm less familar with, was the keyboardist for The Dixie Dregs and an early incarnation of Widespread Panic.

And onto the reason I pulled this recording out -- Jimmy Herring, who, even among these world-reknowned musicians, more than holds his own -- his style could not be more different than Jerry Garcia's....but just one listen to his take on Help On The Way and Slipknot, will show you the fireworks that emit from his fretboard.  Wow!  No wonder he got drafted into Phil's Friends for a while!!!

Subsequent tours of this band had vaied members, but none of them could beat this lineup.

So I present to you BARN59, a short-but sweet show from a classic venue that is really worth your effort to listen to.  Hope you enjoy!
