GEORGE THOROGOOD and the Destroyers - Live at the Palomino Club, West Hollywood CA - 1979-04-22

George Thorogood (born December 24, 1950) is a blues-rock performer from Wilmington, Delaware, known for his hit song "Bad to the Bone" as well as for covers of blues standards such as Hank Williams' "Move It On Over" and John Lee Hooker's "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer". George Thorogood and the [Delaware] Destroyers have released 16 studio albums, including five that have been certified Gold. The band is credited with the early success of Rounder Records.

Thorogood's demo Better Than the Rest was recorded in 1974 and released in 1979. In 1976 he recorded his debut album: the eponymous George Thorogood & The Destroyers with his band, The Destroyers (sometimes known as The Delaware Destroyers or simply GT and D) and issued the album in 1977. Thorogood released his next album titled Move It On Over in 1978 with The Destroyers, which included the Hank Williams remake of "Move It On Over". "Please Set a Date" and their remake of the Bo Diddley song "Who Do You Love?" both followed in 1979. In the late 1970s, Thorogood played on a team in Delaware in the Roberto Clemente League which was created in 1976. He was the second baseman and was chosen rookie of the year in the league. Soon after this achievement, The Destroyers forced him to quit playing the sport. In the 1970s, George and the band were based in Boston (see also Hound Dog Taylor).

George and the Delaware Destroyers were friends with Jimmy Thackery and the Nighthawks. While touring in the 1970s, the Destroyers and the Nighthawks happened to be playing shows in Georgetown (DC) at venues across the street from each other. The Destroyers were engaged at The Cellar Door, the Nighthawks at Desperados. At midnight, by prior arrangement, while both bands played the same song ("Madison Blues") in the same key (E), George and Jimmy left their clubs, met in the middle of M street, exchanged guitar cables and went on to play with the opposing band.

George Thorogood at Fallsview Casino, Niagara Falls, OntarioGeorge and the Destroyers are also notable for undertaking a rigorous touring schedule after appearing throughout the Rolling Stones tour in 1981. After two shows in Boulder, Colorado, George and his band flew to Hawaii and played for only one night. The next night they appeared in Alaska for one show. The following day the band flew to Washington State, met their roadies who had their Checker car and a truck, and continued a one show per state tour for all fifty states in exactly fifty nights. In addition, they played Washington, DC on the same day that they performed a show in Maryland.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Thorogood recorded some of his most well known works. "Bad to the Bone" was used frequently in television and the big screen. Several appearances include Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the comedy Problem Child, Stephen King's Christine, and during many episodes of the television sitcom Married with Children. This track also was used during the intro to the movie Major Payne. The same song is also featured in the game Rock 'n Roll Racing. It is also played during football pregame festivities at Mississippi State University. Quincy Jones once said to Thorogood, "The three things important in a record is the tune, tune, and the tune".

KEITH MOON - Two Sides Of The Moon (1975)

Keith Moon - Two Sides Of The Moon (1975)

Moon the Loon slips from behind the set for a solo record, brings former inmate Ringo along for the ride, and the results are remarkably Ringo-esque in the best sense of the (non) word.

Albums by drummers usually follow one of three courses: the lame genre exercise, the middling pop/rock album and the misguided jazz-rock adventure. Two Sides of the Moon falls into the second category, a respectable rock record that honors its limitations (Moon's voice) and works within those confines to produce a batch of good songs.

Rather than a knockoff of "Who" (except for a straight reading of “Kids Are Alright”), this sounds more like an Ian Hunter record. Moon has that sort of humble and slightly besotted voice, not off key so much as off center. He does a credible job in various settings: country (“One Night Stand”), rock (“Crazy Like A Fox”) and faux island music (“Naked Man”). If you’ve enjoyed Ringo and "Goodnight Vienna", Two Sides of the Moon is worth exploring.

No doubt the whole thing was a party, but Moon stays on target most of the time, apparently serious about the idea of making a real record. It’s not an essential record but, considering how little could be expected from Moon as a solo artist, Two Sides can be surprising. Of course it’s silly in spots, yet it never stoops to the put-upon strangeness of a “Dogs Part Two”.

Two Sides of the Moon serves the Keith Moon legend as a charming anomaly, an indication that there was more to Moon than playing drums like a man possessed and wallowing in comic excess.

This edition of the album includes some good unreleased tracks, single versions and several raps between Ringo and Keith Moon that are mildly amusing.

*Taper Notes*
After to listening to Team Dirty South's stream of the Friday show and finding out afterward that more Saturday tickets had been released, willSFC and I decided to make a cheap up to Nashville from the Shoalsfor night two. Glad we did. It was as strong a show as Friday. Thanks to Matt and Cole of the DBT crew for assisting the audio/video tapers.

Bobby Keys and The Sufferin' Bastards opened the show and were fantastic. The set was a very tiny sample of some of the great cuts Bobby has played on over the years.

I like the Truckers with David Barbe. The band sounds heavier on tracks like "Buttholeville," "Lookout Mountain" and "Play it All Night Long."  Like Friday, the band brought out some gems like "Pin Hits the Shell," "Daddy Learned to Fly" and "Goode's Field Road."

ABOUT
One of the most original and energetic acts around today, ekoostik hookah is the nucleus of a family drawn to its lucid, improvisational treatment of psychedelic rock ’n’ roll, blues, funk, jazz and bluegrass layered with rich harmonies. Born early in 1991 in a smoky basement bar, the band has been continually evolving, cultivating a sound that has perked the ears of contemporaries and attracted fans who travel miles to hear them play.

The Ohio-based band began jamming during weekly open-mic nights when vocalist/keyboardist Dave Katz, lead guitarist Steve Sweney, bassist Cliff Starbuck and guitarist/vocalist John Mullins had full-time gigs with popular bands. The ensemble quickly found a following and began this odyssey when a stranger who heard them at a party bankrolled a trip to the studio to record Under Full Sail. By the end of recording, band members had committed themselves full-time to ekoostik hookah. Drummer Eric Lanese joined in 1993. Since then, the band has undergone a few changes in personnel, including the departure of Starbuck and the addition of bassist Phil Risko and the departure of John Mullins and addition of guitarist/singer/songwriter Eric Sargent in 2010. ekoostik hookah has always independently handled every aspect of its growth.

ekoostik hookah has played in more than 30 states at venues including New York’s Wetlands Preserve, Chicago’s House of Blues, Cleveland’s Nautica Stage, Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse, Boulder’s Fox Theater, Columbus’ Promowest Pavilion, Cleveland’s House of Blues, LA's Whiskey a Go-Go and San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. In 1997 hookah was invited to play at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. ekoostik hookah played its first international shows in June 1999 in Negril, Jamaica. Since then the band has traveled back to Jamaica (in 2002), to the Netherlands in 2003 and back to Jamaica in 2006, bringing their fans along each time.

Though intense live energy fuels this band, hookah fans have snatched up more than 100,000 copies of its eight releases: Under Full Sail (1991), Dubbahbuddah (1994), an untitled, two-disc live set (1996), Where the Fields Grow Green (1998), Hookahville Spring ’98 (1998), Sharp in the Flats (1999), Seahorse (2001) and Ohio Grown (2002).

Hookahville, the band’s home-thrown festival featuring two nights of music and camping in Ohio’s green hills, has been called by fans and critics the best music festival in the Midwest. The biannual happening began in 1994 as a camp-out in Dave Katz and band manager Jeff Spencer’s backyard. Growing steadily, it has since been held at different venues on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. The attendance for Hookahville Spring ’00 exceeded 15,000. Hookahville allows the band to create its ideal "no hassles or bad attitudes" playing environment and share it with many fine live acts. Ratdog, David Crosby, Arlo Guthrie, David Grisman, Dickey Betts, Jazz Mandolin Project, The David Nelson Band, Willie Nelson, The Wailers, P-Funk, Robert Randolph, Little Feat, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs, Blues Traveler, Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon and many others have played on the Hookahville stage.

BIOGRAPHY
by MacKenzie Wilson
Since 1991, the celebratory jam sounds of Columbus, OH's Ekoostik Hookah has made them one of the finest Midwestern bands to emerge from the neo-hippie scene of the 1990s. Starting off performing at local open mic nights, frontman/keyboardist Dave Katz, guitarist Steve Sweney, bassist Cliff Starbuck, and guitarist/vocalist John Mullins decided that a career in music would be financially trying yet enriching because they had a special passion for it all. The group was instantly noticed at a local party, later gaining studio time to record their debut, Under Full Sail, in 1991. In 1993, drummer Eric Lanese joined the group, percussionist John Polansky joined in 1995, and singer/songwriter Ed McGee completed the Ekoostik Hookah lineup the next year.
Throughout the '90s, Ekoostik Hookah trudged throughout the U.S., playing to countless shows while molding their grassroots/jazz/blues organic sounds. A second album, which was titled Dubbabuddah (1994), focused more on the band's lengthy jams and sonic grooves, yet the 1996 release of the band's live album Ekoostik Hookah was more of an accurate depiction of their relentless rock & roll impeccability, the growl of performing in front of an audience, and the power they had as a live band. It's their laid-back nature, the mellow atmospheric body encased in each song, that makes Ekoostik Hookah as desirable as they already are. Studio efforts are obviously a different set for the group, but it's the down-home good time that cuts the hook every time. A third LP, Where the Fields Grow Green, was issued in 1998 and another live double disc, Sharp in the Flats, followed a year later.

ELVIN BISHOP - She Puts Me in the Mood

Elvin Bishop – She Puts Me in the Mood (2012)

Elvin Bishop has been singing and recording his rollicking brand of electrified Blues for almost 40 years. Bishop’s history-making tenure as a founding member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the 1960s, his chart-topping hits in the 1970s, and his emergence on Alligator Records in the late 80s and into the 90s place him at the forefront of electric Blues guitarists.
All 16 tracks on this She Put Me in the Mood compilation were culled from Bishop’s Alligator Records releases, which at the time of their original release received consistent critical acclaim as well as enjoying commercial success. He signed with the Alligator label in 1988 and same year released Big Fun, and Don’t Let the Bossman Get You Down in 1991. He also participated in Alligator’s 1992 20th Anniversary cross-country tour; three years later released an album entitled Ace in the Hole. The Skin I’m In followed in 1998, and 2000's That’s My Partner saw him teaming up with Smokey Smothers, the same musician who had originally taught him guitar.
