KELLER & THE KEELS - THIEF

Keller & The Keels - Thief [2010]

The last time that eclectic one-man band Keller Williams combined with Larry and Jenny Keel on record, for 2006's Grass, they came up with bluegrass arrangements of songs by Pink Floyd and Tom Petty along with their originals. For this follow-up, they have taken an all-covers approach, as the title Thief is meant to suggest. Once again, they are borrowing from rock and working up versions that feature the flatpicking of Williams and Larry Keel over Jenny Keel's bass, resulting in a humorous effect when applied to, say, Amy Winehouse's "Rehab." Some songs are already humorous on their own, such as Patterson Hood's "Uncle Disney" and Cracker's "Teen Angst," the latter also representing a subgenre of songs on the album, favorites from 1990s acts like the one-hit wonders Marcy Playground and Butthole Surfers. In other cases -- Ryan Adams' "Cold Roses," the Grateful Dead's "Mountains of the Moon," the Yonder Mountain String Band's "Wind's on Fire," and the Raconteurs' "Switch and the Spur" -- the originals already had something of a bluegrass flavor. Keller & the Keels play with their tongues in their cheeks, but that doesn't mean the music itself is lacking in virtuosity. On the contrary, the humor tends to put the players' musicianship in the back seat, even though the jokes wouldn't be so funny if they weren't doing some high-quality picking here. It's just that they're doing so while maintaining their sense of humor and paying affectionate, if not entirely sincere, tribute to some of the music they love.

REVIEW
by William Ruhlmann
Keller Williams is usually put in the category of "jam band," even though for the better part of his career he has performed alone, creating tape loops to accompany himself. The exceptions to this lonely journey include his albums Grass, a bluegrass collaboration with the Keels, and Dream, which features a raft of guest musicians. But Live is really the first true jam band effort from Williams in the sense that it actually is performed by a jam band, here credited as "Keller Williams with Moseley, Droll & Sipe." That's bassist Keith Moseley, guitarist Gibb Droll, and drummer Jeff Sipe, and this quartet is very much a jam band and very much in the tradition of jam band progenitor the Grateful Dead. That comes across on this album not only in the music, but also in the sprawling length: containing two CDs, each running more than an hour, plus a 90-minute DVD that doesn't overlap with any of the material on the CDs, this package runs more than three-and-a-half hours. Then, too, there are the visuals on the DVD, which is a professional, if rudimentary effort in video terms, taken directly from the feed used on a screen shown to patrons of the shows. There seem to be only a couple of cameras in use, and they tend to stay fixed on particular simple shots of the players, although psychedelic special visual effects, rather like the geometric patterns available on the average computer CD player, break things up. It's like a modern-day version of an old San Francisco light show. On the CDs and the DVD, the band plays extended songs with long, meandering solo passages. Now and then, Williams comes to the microphone to sing, rap, or indulge in vocalese, presenting his whimsical novelty lyrics in a croon reminiscent of Michael Franks. Occasionally, the music veers into '20s jazz ("Reinhardt Rag") or heavy metal passages, but for the most part the styles will sound very familiar to Deadheads, a mixture of country-rock and exploratory electric instrumental music. In case anyone might miss the point, Williams even throws in his version of the Dead's "The Other One" and "Don't Let Go," a regular part of the Jerry Garcia Band's repertoire. Williams is an engaging, pixie-like presence on this disc, especially the DVD portion, but that doesn't keep him from playing well and proving himself an able bandleader after so many years alone.

BIOGRAPHY
by Steve Leggett
Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Keller Williams is literally a one-man jam band. His fascinating live shows feature him solo on-stage with a Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro looping unit, and he creates his backing loops in the moment, building and improvising as he goes on his custom-made ten-string guitar, and thanks to his equally as quirky, upbeat, and semi-surreal songs (which he frequently weaves into extended, half-improvised medleys) and his warm, friendly tenor singing voice, Williams is an utterly unique performer whose musical eccentricities don't keep him from being immediately accessible. A native of Virginia, Williams received his first guitar at the age of three, although he admits he didn't really learn to play it until he was in his early teens. He attended high school in his hometown of Fredericksburg, and began playing solo gigs when he was 17. He discovered the new age guitar genius of Michael Hedges a year or so later, and Hedges has been a lifelong influence on Williams' approach to the guitar.
Following a stint at college (he attended Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach from 1988 to 1991, majoring in theater) and frequent gigs in his hometown region, he self-released a debut album, Freek, in 1994. Williams relocated to Colorado the following year, and it was there where he met the members of the progressive bluegrass band String Cheese Incident at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Williams ended up touring with them as an opening act in 1997 and again in 1998, even filling in for a time as their bass player. A second solo album, Buzz, was released in 1996. Williams eventually signed to String Cheese Incident's label, SCI Fidelity, and released Spun in 1998. Incredibly prolific, Williams has released nearly an album a year ever since on SCI, all with one word titles. Breathe appeared in 1999, Loop in 2001, Laugh in 2002, Dance and Home in 2003, Stage in 2004, and the DVD Sight in 2005. Grass (credited to Keller & the Keels) appeared in 2006 and Dream in 2007. In December of 2007 he released his 12th CD, a compilation appropriately titled 12. Endlessly creative, innovative, and fun, Williams is a fascinating artist, and his somewhat wacky take on the world, coupled with his amazing and eccentric guitar talents, makes him a refreshing performer.

Wilco – Roadcase 007 (2012)

As Wilco’s studio output remains constant in release, there is a widening gap between their earlier works and the last couple albums.
Thankfully, they have remained as voracious as ever on the road and consistently put on one of the best live shows in rock and roll.
Taking a cue from other bands that generate a live cult following because of their ability to stay ‘fresh’ on the road by playing varying set lists  while maintaining a deep familiarity with their back catalogue, Wilco has released high quality recordings of many of their Summer concerts for public consumption.
Wilco, unlike Pearl Jam and Phish, are releasing random shows in a series called Roadcase, which at the time of writing, has eight volumes.

The 'Floyds of London' roio has now been seen labelled as Pink Floyd Meddler with what looks like some kind of black inked rubber stamp. This perhaps confirms the rumour that Floyds of London is the 'original packaging' version of Meddler. Previous versions had no mention of Meddler at all.

RY COODER – I, FLATHEAD

Many of guitarist Ry Cooder's best albums are movie scores, including the folk-culture clash of 1985's Alamo Bay and the purple-prairie atmospheres of 1989's Paris, Texas. So it makes sense that, offscreen, he writes music like a film director. I, Flathead completes Cooder's trilogy of albums about endangered subcultural California (following 2005's Chavez Ravine and 2007's My Name Is Buddy), and a deluxe edition of this CD comes with a novella. You will need it to fully grasp the concept — Cooder plays a fictional race-car driver and struggling country singer, Kash Buk — but it is easy to enjoy the songs as individual scenes, by turns sultry (the mariachi-R&B opener "Drive Like I Never Been Hurt"), comic (the Western-swing gag "Spayed Kooley") and romantic (the cantina-band yearning of "Filipino Dance Hall Girl"). Cooder sings the album's best number, "5,000 Country Music Songs," in character, as Buk, but in a way closer to the 1972 gem "Boomer's Story" — like a guy making slow headway in an indifferent world, to tart, poignant guitar-playing that is a sweet, short movie in itself. - rollingstone.com

RY COODER - PULL UP SOME DUST AND SIT DOWN

After completing his epic California Trilogy, with its stories of life in his home state in the 40s and 50s, Ry Cooder returns with a solo project that is as refreshing, brave and original as his early recordings in the 70s. This time round there are no elaborate narratives, but there is a common theme: these are songs of a broken, divided society and the gap between rich and poor, but with the anger matched against humour. He's a master at setting bleak or thoughtful lyrics against jaunty melodies. No Banker Left Behind is the story of bankers on a spree after they "robbed the nation blind", set to a romping, country-edged tune, while Christmas Time This Year places a horrific story of war casualties against a cheerful Mexican dance melody, with accordion from Flaco Jiménez. Cooder plays guitar, mandola, banjo, bass and keyboards, and constantly changes direction from the evocative portrait of a rich man and his maid in Dirty Chateau to the gospel-edged stomp of Lord Tell Me Why ("a white man ain't worth nothing in this land no more"), which is quickly followed by the witty blues of John Lee Hooker for President. He ends with No Hard Feelings, a finely sung ballad that first rewrites Woody Guthrie ("this land should have been our land") and ends in despair and resignation. Magnificent. - guardian.co.uk

RY COODER – Election Special

Ry Cooder – Election Special (2012)

Just in time for the 2012 presidential contest, Ry Cooder drops Election Special, the follow-up to the topical and thematic Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down. Like virtually all of his records in the 21st century, Cooder’s album is full of folk, blues, and roots songs that are unapologetically political in nature. He plays everything but drums, and wrote or co-wrote the tunes. Rather than use metaphors, Cooder takes direct — often humorous — aim at the objects of ire this time out: Super PACS, multi billionaire conservative activist brothers Charles and David Koch, and candidate Mitt Romney — also a billionaire.
Here, Cooder explains each song, from “Mutt Romney Blues” to “Take Your Hands Off It,” a track he co-wrote with his son Joachim:

1. Mutt Romney Blues: Reverend Al Sharpton said, “How he treated his dog tells you a lot about him.” Where did Mitt Romney learn that hollow laugh of his? A correspondence course on how to scare your dog shitless? He sure scares me, I don’t mind telling you.
2. Brother Is Gone: The only logical explanation for the Brothers I could come up with is, they made their deal at the crossroads with Satan. Satan will need to get paid, but in the meantime, they are doing everything in their power to hurt you and me. The big hurt.
3. The Wall Street Part of Town: Is there a Wall Street part of town in your town? Start your own, it’s easy. When the police come, remind them that you pay their salary, such as it may be.
4. Guantanamo: There’s a beautiful Cuban song about a country girl from Guantanamo. The lyrics were written over a hundred years ago, and they say something about peace and freedom, so I guess the problem hasn’t been solved yet. Prisons are the new growth industry.
5. Cold Cold Feeling: The president, alone in the dark, walks the Oval Office floor. Before you criticize and accuse, walk a mile in his shoes.
6. Going to Tampa: As a mother, will Sarah Palin lead the Republican convention in a prayer for Treyvon? Will “Stand Your Ground” stand? Don’t forget your bed sheet and keep your money in your shoes.
7. Kool-Aid: A lament for this guy Zimmerman, and all the many Zimmermans. Too late, they find their masters have given them gun rights and new “Stand Your Ground” lynching laws instead of good paying jobs and secure futures. They drank the Kool-Aid, they really drank it down.
8. The 90 and the 9: A possible political discussion between a father and child. Here in Los Angeles, they allow military recruiters in public schools. If you speak against it, they come down hard on you. I don’t even know what name you give to a criminal conspiracy like that.
9. Take Your Hands off It: Woody said, “This land is your land.” There’s a famous photograph of a sign that reads, “Don’t let the big men take it away.” On the other hand, James Baldwin believed the concepts of nationhood such as freedom, equality, and democracy are superstitions, nothing more.
