Aphrodite's Child - 666 (1972)
Tag : Aphrodite's Child
"666 (The Apocalypse of John, 13/18) is a double album by PSYCHEDELIC/PROGRESSIVE ART ROCK group Aphrodite's Child. It is one of the early cult albums in rock history, and is still popular among fans today. It was published in 1972, and was the primary vehicle/effort for this Vangelis project. It had a minor Album Oriented Radio hit in "The Four Horsemen," and a nearly pop hit with "Break." The album was ostensibly an adaptation of Biblical passages from the book of the same name, but was also very experimental in lyrics and composition, including a curious piece of performance art in which Irene Papas is struggling to chant a mantra while coming to climax." - Wikipedia

REVIEW
by William Ruhlmann
Octogenarian singer/mandolin player Jesse McReynolds is quick to point out in his liner notes that Songs of the Grateful Dead does not mark the first time this venerable bluegrass musician has ventured into the rock realm, having played on the Doors' Soft Parade and, with his brother in their duo Jim & Jesse, cut a Chuck Berry tribute album, Berry Pickin' in the Country. This tribute is not nearly as much of a stretch as that one, however. As Deadheads know, Dead leader Jerry Garcia was a big bluegrass fan, and his songs for the group often reflected that taste. Also, he sometimes played bluegrass in his side projects, and McReynolds has enlisted some of Garcia's sidemen in this effort, the "friends" of the artist credit specifically referring to David Nelson of the New Riders of the Purple Sage and Stu Allen of the Jerry Garcia Band, with Garcia friend Sandy Rothman picking a banjo on "Deep Elem Blues" and penning his own liner notes in which he attests to his and Garcia's affection for Jim & Jesse. With all this mutual admiration, then, it's not surprising that the album comes off so well. McReynolds has not restricted himself to what might seem like the obvious choices from such country-oriented Dead albums as Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, also including some of the later songs by Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter, such as "Black Muddy River" and "Standing on the Moon." Just as Garcia's melodies reveal bluegrass and country influences, so Hunter's aphoristic lyrics, full of Western imagery, work just fine with McReynolds' rural inflections. And the players are not averse to going for some Dead-style space jamming on such selections as "Bird Song" and "Franklin's Tower." It all comes to an appropriate close with a new McReynolds/Hunter composition, the lightly philosophical "Day by Day." "If Jerry was here, he'd be playing on this album," writes Rothman, and that's hard to doubt; even without his actual presence, his spirit is evoked.

CHEAP TRICK – The Complete Epic Albums Collection
Cheap Trick – The Complete Epic Albums Collection (2012)
“ELO kiddies, ELO kiddies, whatcha gonna do when the lights start shining?” went the musical question in the first song on Cheap Trick’s very first album. But one question, naturally, leads to another. Was the song title simply saying a British ‘elo in a cheeky salute? Or was it alluding to ELO, a.k.a. Electric Light Orchestra, the orchestral rock outfit founded by Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood? Why the heck does the song sound more like Gary Glitter than those Brummies? And where did the boys from Illinois soak up all of those British influences anyway? You’ll find plenty of questions, as well as deliciously satisfying answers, in the handy 13-album/14-CD cube helpfully entitled Cheap Trick: The Complete Epic Albums Collection (Epic/Legacy 88697 94193 2, 2012).
Produced by Bruce Dickinson and mastered by Vic Anesini, this exclusive box set brings together the formidable 1977-1990 catalogue of one of America’s most electrifying rock bands. A full five albums (One on One, Standing on the Edge, The Doctor, Lap of Luxury and Busted) have been newly remastered expressly for this set, while Found All the Parts makes its U.S. CD debut and the “Authorized Version” of the Todd Rundgren-produced Next Position Please has its worldwide CD premiere. In addition, five albums have bonus tracks mirroring their most recent Legacy reissues, and the acclaimed At Budokan is presented in its complete 2-CD form. Indeed, this is a comprehensive anthology suitable for both longtime Cheap Trick fans as well as for new fans looking to build a library in one fell swoop.
Once Rick Neilsen and Tom Petersson lit The Fuse in the late 1960s, the stage was set for Cheap Trick. The Fuse didn’t burn for long, though, and the Chicago duo reunited to Philadelphia where they became Sick Men of Europe (presumably by way of South Street). Returning to Illinois in 1973, Neilsen and Petersson added drummer Bun E. Carlos and singer Randy “Xeno” Hogan to their band, finally becoming Cheap Trick. Hogan didn’t do the Trick, however, and was replaced in short order by Robin Zander. From 1975 onward, the band toured relentlessly, and in 1976 Cheap Trick was rewarded with an Epic Records recording contract. Producer Jack Douglas was tasked with the chore of bringing to record the band’s singular brand of rock: crunchy riffs on top of bright pop melodies, enlivened by eccentric, often dark humor and a subversive lyrical outlook. The result, 1977’s Cheap Trick, failed to chart in the U.S. but became a major seller in Japan, priming the band for worldwide success.
The quartet’s second album, 1978’s In Color, dented the charts at No. 73 but smoothed out the rough edges of the ’77 debut with a somewhat quieter, even more melodic approach. The magic finally arrived with Heaven Tonight (1978). Like In Color, it was produced by Tom Werman, but this time out, he found Cheap Trick’s sweet spot. Werman didn’t discourage the hook-filled songs inspired by the best of the British Invasion, but they were interpreted via a loud, tough and current sound. “Surrender” from Heaven Tonight became Cheap Trick’s first Top 100 single, and a calling card for the group. Heaven Tonight may be a great power pop album, but the emphasis is on the power. Another band that mastered the heavy-yet-light balance was The Move, and Cheap Trick made explicit its devotion to the quirky rock of Roy Wood with a cover of his “California Man.”
And the fans surrendered to 1979’s At Budokan, on which the aggressive playing is rewarded by the audience’s palpable fervor. The original Top 5-charting release was expanded by Legacy in 1998 from 10 tracks to the concert’s full 19 by incorporating material first aired on 1994’s Budokan II, and that 1998 set is the version included here. (A whopping 3-CD/1-DVD set from 2008 expanded the original album further with a second concert included.) Werman returned for the next studio effort, Dream Police, on which the production was as elaborate as At Budokan was raw. Then, in 1980, Cheap Trick released the four-track EP Found All the Parts, freeing from the band’s vaults three new compositions and a cover of The Beatles’ “Day Tripper.” This EP acknowledged the clear Beatles influence on the band, and this box set marks its very first time on American CD in its original form. So for All Shook Up, released later that year, Cheap Trick went to the source: none other than George Martin. Since his legendary run with the Fabs, Martin had produced a string of successful albums for America as well as albums by a crop of artists running the gamut from Neil Sedaka to Jeff Beck. Now, his imprimatur was bestowed on Neilsen and co., and although the album might have been crushed under the weight of its lofty expectations, it’s far more than a mere footnote in the group’s discography.
Roy Thomas Baker, well known for his work with Queen and The Cars, followed Martin as producer of 1982’s One on One, which introduced new bassist Jon Brant, but an even more eyebrow-raising match was yet to come. Todd Rundgren, known for his outré studio experimentation as well as for his own style of power pop, was familiar with Cheap Trick; Robert “Stewkey” Antoni of Rundgren’s first band The Nazz had briefly played in the embryonic Sick Men of Europe with the future Cheap Trick members. (Rundgren also shared the band’s enthusiasm for The Move; Roy Wood’s band had covered Todd’s “Open My Eyes” and Rundgren repaid the favor with his own take on “Do Ya.”) Neilsen recalled meeting Rundgren as far back as 1969, at which time Todd had actually advised the singer against working with his old bandmate Stewkey! For his part, Rundgren wasn’t concerned about stepping into the producer’s chair for the album that became Next Position Please: “My priority as a producer, first of all, is the material. Show me the music and then, of course, show me the money!” Joking aside, he added to author Paul Myers, “It’s entirely down to songs, though.” Engineer Chris Andersen told Myers, “There was just a great vibe in the studio, and a genuine camaraderie between Todd and the band.” In addition to his production duties, the multi-talented Rundgren also contributed guitars to the album and a song of his own, “Heaven’s Falling,” which was the kind of infectious power pop he seemingly could turn out with ease. The trouble began when Epic Records didn’t hear a single on the LP, even though Rundgren thought Robin Zander’s big, arena-ready “I Can’t Take It” was prime 45 material. Epic removed two of the proposed album’s tracks, “Don’t Hit Me with Love” and “Twisted Heart,” and ordered the band into the studio with Ian Taylor as producer for a cover of The Motors’ “Dancing the Night Away” and Neilsen’s own “You Say Jump.” The album’s “You Talk Too Much” and “Don’t Make Our Love A Crime” were relegated to bonus track status on subsequent cassette and CD editions of the album.
When Next Position Please was released in 1983, it managed a No. 61 chart placement but lacked staying power despite its tuneful melodies, bright production and brash spirit. In 2006, the band reconsidered the album, digitally issuing an “Authorized Edition” with all of the Rundgren tracks restored, and the two non-Todd tracks sequenced at the album’s conclusion. This “complete” 16-track version, thankfully, makes its CD debut as part of The Complete Epic Albums Collection, allowing the work of “kindred spirit” Rundgren, according to Bun E. Carlos, to shine fully.
Four more albums for Epic followed in the 1980s. 1985’s Standing on the Edge reunited the group with producer Jack Douglas and yielded the almost-Top 40 single “Tonight It’s You” but the album lacked a strong character even if Carlos pointedly was credited for “acoustic drums” on the album sleeve amidst the decade’s drum machine deluge. (Even Rundgren had been enamored of the Linn drum machine, with Carlos playing live drums to Rundgren’s programmed track on the previous LP.) 1986’s The Doctor, however, embraced the eighties ethos head-on, with synthesizer and drum machine overload on happily trashy songs like “Good Girls Go to Heaven (Bad Girls Go Everywhere).” Certain charms aside, The Doctor (produced by Tony Platt) hasn’t aged as well as the band’s more successful albums. The harder-rocking Lap of Luxury (1988) followed, with a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel” and a phalanx of outside co-writers including Diane Warren on “Ghost Town.” Ironically, though, Cheap Trick scored its first No. 1 hit with Bob Mitchell and Nick Graham’s bombastic power ballad “The Flame,” brought to the group by album producer Richie Zito. The pop-metal sound of Lap of Luxury (with original bassist Petersson back in the fold) proved that Cheap Trick indeed had a place in the 1980s.
The Complete Epic Albums Collection concludes with Cheap Trick’s first effort of the 1990s, Busted, which turned again to Diane Warren but also looked back to the inspiration of Roy Wood with a cover of “Rock ‘N’ Roll Tonight.” Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders joined in with vocals on “Walk Away” while Foreigner’s Mick Jones contributed guitar to “If You Need Me.” The album yielded a moderate radio hit with “Can’t Stop Fallin’ Into Love,” written by Neilsen, Zander and Petersson, but Cheap Trick and Epic soon parted ways.
In the ensuing 20+ years, Cheap Trick has continued to tour and record, offering a handful of new studio albums as well as choice live albums like 2009’s Sgt. Pepper Live, paying homage once again to The Beatles in the band’s typically high-octane fashion. But the albums contained within this checkerboard are without a doubt the core of the band’s great legacy. The box set, in addition to its truly superlative sound, also offers a 32-page booklet. It lacks any liner notes, but contains the personnel info, track listings and discographical annotation for every album included. Each title is housed in a mini-LP replica jacket.

MY MORNING JACKET : August 3rd + 4th, 2012 [Official Bootleg] (2012)
My Morning Jacket – Red Rocks August 3+4, 2012 [Official Bootleg] (2012)
If we had to make a list of bands who need to sell live recordings on a regular basis, Wilco and My Morning Jacket would’ve been near the top of that list. Apparently our wish has come true as hot on the heels of Wilco’s “experiment” in selling live shows comes word that My Morning Jacket have just launched an Official Bootleg Series.
According to the website, shows are available for download approximately three to five days after each performance. With the Spontaneous Curation series in full effect, and MMJ dusting off rarities at each stop, this is great timing. Plus, MMJ promised no repeats between the two Red Rocks gigs.

Notes:
1. With Elvis Costello
This is yet another release from the "no label" or "anonymous" label containing both of Springsteen's excellent shows at Madison Square Garden in the fall of 2009, aquired as a very pricey import. The label bills this release as a "Stereo Soundboard Recording" as it did with the similar release "Giants Stadium 2009." Interestingly enough, I feel the claim of this being an actual soundboard tape may actually be true, even though the last known soundboard tape to leak out of Camp Bruce was from 1993. To my ears, it doesn't have the thin, almost hollow quality of most IEM recordings, and the lack of obnoxious audience noise (like the screamers & the talkers) make it seem less like an IEM-audience recording mix. That is not to say it sounds dry & sterile, which it does not- there is audience noise at the expected parts that are not intrusive to the music. And as far as the music goes-it is grand, with a nice, full balanced mix (for the most part). Therefore, if it is a mix of some variety of multiple IEMs and an audience source, it is one of the most skillfull mixes ever made. I just don't feel that it is. How this tape ever made it out to the public, I don't know-but Springsteen fans everywhere should rejoice to have such fantastic quality shows available given Bruce & his management's obtuse reluctance to just put out live show downloads as many other artists have. I just hope these great tapes keep coming.
Although these shows have already made the rounds in great quality, this particular release offers yet more versions to add to the ranks. How does this release rank in comparison to the others? The source of the Wild & Innocent show is the same as the Crystal Cat release from last year, although this version to me is superior. Why? Because it doesn't have the eardrum-splitting, over-the-top compression on it that Crystal Cat unfortunately applied to the source. The music is natural and has room to breathe here, as it sounded that night in the arena. This release also avoids Crystal Cat's problematic choice to split Incident On 57th Street & Rosalita between 2 discs. The natural flow of the show is intact, with the split occuring at the more logical point between Wild Billy's Circus Story & Incident, as it occurs on the original LP.
The best part of this release of The River show, which is a completely new source from all of the currently circulating sources. The quality is again outstanding, with a nice natural and full sound. To have an excellent sonic document of the best concert I have ever seen by Bruce (or any other artist) since I started seeing him in 2000 is a blessing. Indeed, I feel November 8, 2009 still stands as the best show Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band performed since 1999, through and including the recent 2012 European stadium run. It was simply that good. The band had an energy flowing from that stage that night like I have never witnessed, and were locked into playing off one another, as if they were 30 years younger themselves. The outing of such long-forgotten jems as The Price You Pay, Stolen Car, Fade Away & Wreck On The Highway would expectedly be shaky at best-but the band absolutely nailed each and every song with laser focused intensity. Even the more common tracks like Two Hearts, Ramrod, and Out In The Street seemed to have just a little more joy to them. Most importantly, in playing the whole of The River, the show had that dramatic arc of many emotions which had been so lacking in many of the shows from 2009.
Not that November 7, 2009 is anything subpar, for the full performance of The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle is simply exquisite. If the rest of the show feels somewhat "ordinary" it is due to the fact that the album performance overshadows the rest of it by a long mile. Here we have what I consider to be the absolute definitve versions of 2 of my favorite Springsteen songs, Incident On 57th Street and New York City Serenade, bar none. The addition of the strings and the congas to New York City Serenade, as present on the original album version, give it a totally unique feeling and texture that was sorely absent in other performances, and Bruce's vocal delivery is absolutely sublime. On Incident, again the band nails the dynamics of the song with sheer precision, and Bruce concludes it with a fierce guitar solo that launches it into the stratosphere. Elsewhere, E Street Shuffle and Kitty's Back absolutely smoke with the addition of a horn section. Add in fine performances of Human Touch, one of my "guilty pleasures" from the Springsteen songbook, a fantastic Thundercrack, and a seething version of Seeds and you have one fine show indeed. To have them in this sound quality make this a must-have release.
In conclusion, I offer this release as a gift to the Springsteen community-to all of those tapers, rippers, and self-made engineers that have plopped down their own hard-earned cash, time, and efforts in bringing the gift of live Springsteen to all of us. I know I have benefitted many times over from their efforts, this is my small offering to give back. I hope this will inspire the continued sharing of rare and great uncirculated tapes (Shea 2003, Philly 2009, St. Louis 2008 IEMs anybody?). I hope you all enjoy this fine release, and in Bruce's words, see you Further On Up The Road!

THE GRATEFUL DEAD - The Vault Box
Grateful Dead - The Vault Box [1975, 68 & 71, + @320]
The six CDs -- seven, if you count the separate, limited-edition bonus disc -- housed within the Vault Box (2007) include a trio of otherwise available From the Vault volumes. Each installment houses a (more or less) complete concert, presented in its entirety from very high fidelity multi-track sources. Interestingly, while the first and second sets were issued in fairly rapid succession in the early '90s, it took over a decade-and-a-half before Three from the Vault surfaced. The lapse had much to do with the inauguration of the Dick's Picks series, as it had been readied for market as early as 1994 by the Dead's collaborator and audio engineer Dan Healy.
One from the Vault (1991) hails from August 13, 1975 at the venerable Bay Area based Great American Music Hall. The concert marked only the third live Grateful Dead appearance in nearly a year. The show also provided lucky attendees and the North American radio audience, who caught a rebroadcast via the Metromedia Radio Network, material from their soon-to-be-unleashed masterpiece Blues for Allah (1975). The lineup of Jerry Garcia (lead guitar/vocals), Phil Lesh (bass/vocals), Bob Weir (guitar/vocals), Bill Kreutzmann (percussion), Mickey Hart (percussion/crickets), Keith Godchaux (keyboards), and Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals) unveil the whole album, albeit out of sequence. Among the outstanding highlights are Weir's beatific instrumental "Sage and Spirit," the opening power-trio of "Help on the Way"/"Slipknot!"/"Franklin's Tower" and "King Solomon's Marbles" (aka "Stronger Than Dirt"). Plus, they dust off "Eyes of the World," a lilting "It Must Have Been the Roses," and a thoroughly groovy "Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad."
Two from the Vault (1992) steps back to August 24, 1968 where we find the Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals/keyboards) co-led version of the Grateful Dead. As fate would have it, the concert was one of the preeminent rock & roll gigs to be documented on new-fangled multi-track recording machines -- most of which had never been road tested before. The end result yielded a recording that sounded as good twenty years after the fact as it did to those who were there to experience it. Not to be missed are the psychedelic and exploratory "Dark Star, "the half-hour plus "That's It for the Other One"/"New Potato Caboose" and a rousing "(Walk Me out in The) Morning Dew" finale that is literally cut short mid-song thanks to the strict enforcement of a curfew.
Three from the Vault (2007) is dedicated to the second evening of a mid-February 1971 run at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY. Debuted during the opening nights were a number of songs that would remain in the Grateful Dead's repertoire for the rest of their collective careers. Captured here are the very first "Bird Song" and "Deal," as well as embryonic outings of "Bertha," "Playing in the Band," "Greatest Story Ever Told,""Loser," and "Wharf Rat" -- each of which had been premiered one night earlier. As historically significant as these additions certainly are, it is the McKernan excursions on "Hurts Me Too," the long and sinuous "Smokestack Lightnin'," and a soulful spin of "Easy Wind" that should be considered in the Must Hear category for all Deadheads. Noteworthy too is that the February 19 show would be marked by the absence of Mickey Hart, who left the night before and would not return to action until 1975. Purchasers of the Vault Box via the Grateful Dead's online store were treated to a bonus CD containing a smoldering suite with "Alligator"/"Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks)" and "Feedback" from August 23, 1968 at the Shrine Auditorium. These extra songs likewise augment the expanded edition of Two from the Vault issued in 2007.

The Allman Brothers Band
The Syria Mosque
Pittsburgh,PA
January.17,1971
This is a very hot Soundboard performance! The group is really
into it. Duane's slide guitar is superb. This concert was done at
the relatively small Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh,PA on 1-17-1971.
Taj Mahal had just finished their set and now it was the Allman
Brothers' turn. And what a show it was!
The chemistry between Duane,Greg,Dickey and Berry is very
apparent.
This show is about 65 minutes long.
The 20 minute version of "Whipping Post" is outstanding!
1-Statesboro Blues
2-Trouble No More
3-Don't Keep Me Wondering.
4-In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.
5-Midnight Rider.
6-You Don't Love Me.

This show is a perfect soundboard recording of the second of a two night stand. The performers are all in good moods and playing extremely well; the sound quality on this is amazing! I really can't say enough good things about this one...it's a must have! There are various edits at spots througout the recording which suggests that there is a more complete copy in existence. To my knowledge, this is the complete performance of Steve with the Bluegrass Dukes. While I haven't seen Steve's solo set, the Tim O'Brien set is in circulation & I will be posting that very soon.Enjoy!
