This recording sounds to me like one channel soundboard and one channel audience, as do other circulating tapes from this club. It's definitely got an ambient sound with quite a bit of tape hiss but sounds fairly decent - especially after the speed correction. http://fp.io/aa858413/

This is Quicksilver’s final performance of a three-night Winterland run. This night they were opening for local friends Jefferson Airplane.
It's New Years Eve 1967/68, and QMS is surrounded by friends and family both on the stage and off. It's obvious from the relaxed instrumental beginning that this will be a long, psychedelic night. With little or no thought of time constraints, almost all the material from the previous two nights is included again in this set. Strong improvisational versions of "Who Do You Love," "Smokestack Lightning" and another extended jam on "Gold and Silver" are highlights, as is the set closing "Mona," which travels to the outer regions of psychedelia and showcases John Cipollina and Gary Duncan's intertwining guitar work - essentially a preview of where they would head on their next album, Happy Trails.
Following sets by Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Jefferson Airplane, a free form jam ensued, featuring members of all three bands - a memorable way to ring in the New Year, to say the least. http://fp.io/mad11ca5/
VARIOUS ARTISTS - The Very Best of T.S.O.B. Records
VA – The Very Best of T.S.O.B. Records (2012)
While America at large went into “post-disco” mode at the dawning of the ’80s, devoted New York City club DJs and radio jocks kept the thumping soul of the genre alive by regularly spinning 12? singles from indie labels across the five boroughs. Among the sources was Delano “Rock” McLaurin’s T.S.O.B. (The Sound of Brooklyn) Records. From 1980-82, the company turned out over a dozen releases. Blending fired-up funk and melodious R&B flavors with hard-edged dance floor grooves, the selections on Boogie Times Records’ new anthology, The Very Best of T.S.O.B. Records showcase both dexterous musicians and authentic vocalists whose work still sounds fresh three decades later.
The set opens with the atmospheric strains of Mel Sheppard’s “Can I Take You Home,” a potpourri of rock-steady, live-drum backbeats, glistening synth work, and homegrown soul vocals. The contagious affair easily counters disco naysayers’ claims with its bountiful live arrangement. In a slightly more downtempo stance, the wickedly catchy piano riffs and vocal hook of Cory’s “The Smirf” embodies the edgy essence of city streets. Indeed, the seemingly lightearted call to “Smirf in, smirf out … Smirfin’s what it’s all about” is impossible to resist when belted out so vibrantly by the mysterious female singer. Meanwhile, the approach is sultry and sassy on Wild Sugar’s “Messin’ Around,” which pairs a gospel-tinged vocal arrangement with wicked guitar pickin’ and stratospheric keyboard exercises.
The crowning moment of The Very Best of T.S.O.B. is the deeply bone-shaking “What’s in It for Me” by Zalmac featuring Zulema. From the intrinsically down-to-earth storyline, to Zulema’s unmistakeable phrasing style, right on down to the raw but sophisticated synth work, the duration of the track is an euphoric meeting of old-school throw-down funk and modern-age boogie business.
Unlike other vocalists signed to T.S.O.B., Zulema already had a solid track record of R&B chart appearances by the time she joined forces with producer Al MacDowell for the label. Like her labelmates, however, she seemed to disappear from sight once owner McLaurin closed up shop in 1982. Given that sad reality, his decision to license these masters for re-release is most welcome. Now, it would be doubly sweet if the vocalists, musicians, and producers behind these gems would bring their magic back to the scene—and help school some current fly-by-night artists in the process.

Review
A very special vintage concert performance by one of the most critically acclaimed bands to come out of the San Francisco 60s psychedelic rock movement, Quicksilver Messenger Service!
Features the classic line-up performing their entire second album, Happy Trails - ranked at #189 on Rolling Stone s list of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time!
What looks like a pretty exciting release is actually just a re-packaging of Quicksilver Messenger Service's 2nd album "Happy Trail" (1968). Just compare the track listing and the timings between the two: they are pretty identical.
How Purple Pyramid Records (a subsidy of Cleopatra Records) can get away with this obvious rip-off is beyond me, especially since BGO records (UK) just released a remastered "Happy Trails" in 2010.
Purple Pyramid's "shiny" new cover art is kinda interesting, but that's about it. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Capitol Records ends up suing the pants off of Purple Pyramid for copyright infringement.
As far as the music, this is prime Quicksilver Messenger Service. Live, improvisational and spontaneous. If you don't already have this in your QMS collection, this one is a must. The sound is exceptional with good stereo separation. Hard to believe this is even a live recording at all.
Thank you for the heads up about this being a mere reissue. I've had it in my wish list for a while but won't be buying it now.
I've been ripped off before, but never this blatantly! I scoured the web before I bought this CD as I already had Happy Trails on LP and I was wary of the identical track listing and the fact that it was amazing that unreleased live stuff from Quicksilver Messenger Service from 1969 had eluded all of us fanatics up until the present. The inside liner note that someone posted stated that this was an unknown performance from 1969 and the last one with Gary Duncan and made no mention that this was merely a reissue of Happy Trails, albeit with inferior sound quality; so I figured that this CD was a dream come true for us Quicksilver freaks. I'm still incredulous that Purple Pyramid could pull off a stunt like this and not be aware of the damage to their reputation! I mean, like, what were they thinking?

TONY WILLIAMS - EMERGENCY!
Tony Williams - "Emergency!" (1969) @320
During Tony Williams' stint with Miles Davis, he displayed an unparalleled mastery of time and texture, suggesting at once the meter-less pulsations of Milford Graves and Sonny Murray, and the polyrhythmic swing of Max Roach, Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones. The Davis rhythm section (Williams, bassist Ron Carter, pianist Herbie Hancock) learned to superimpose fresh harmonies and rhythms on top of a flexible basic pulse, driven along by the drummer's percolating hi-hat. And when the band broke up, each member gravitated towards some aspect of the emerging new pop music: The Beatles, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix. And if Herbie felt the funk, Tony wanted to rock, and to that end he formed the most slamming, freewheeling organ trio in the history of jazz.
Emergency!, and its companion, Turn It Over, are about as good as it gets. Completely groundbreaking when released, the sound is avante garde even today. Williams plays like a man possessed and McLaughlin, whose guitar virtuosity carries more purpose and funk than it would later in his Mahavishnu Orchestra work, has never been better. The third member of this unlikely trio, organist Larry Young, contributes enormously to the sound's uniqueness with smeared chords that appear according to some unfathomable logic, he is always surprising and interesting.
The Tony Williams Lifetime played so loud that on club dates Williams needed monitors to hear the drums. Hard to imagine just three people produced this tidal wave of music. The singing is forgettable, although not horrible. But the melding of rock, blues, and jazz is truly astonishing. This has been called the first fusion album, and it's true that Williams, along with McLaughlin, were, in collaboration with Miles Davis, at the very edge of fusion. Whether it's the first can be debated, what's indisputable is the way Emergency! raises the bar for rock and jazz, from the vantage points of technical excellence, daring, and sheer unbridled intensity. A must-have recording. By El Lagarto (Ambler, PA).
Williams's group Lifetime, which looked on paper like an organ jazz-funk trio, produced in 1969 this headlong hybrid from jazz complexity and rock immediacy. Williams, fresh from edging Davis towards his jazz-rock-soul period, concocts a driving, high-volume fusion that has more conviction and flare than anyone else's would until the advent of the great Mahavishnu Orchestra a couple of years later. That band was led by Williams's collaborator here, John McLaughlin, as blistering and savvy a guitarist as any jazz-rock saw. Larry Young's organ is a skirmishing juggernaut, clearing and blasting into space above, behind, beneath, and between the drummer's crashing, jittering rhythms. A cautionary note: To be sure, Williams's singing on Emergency! is brave, at best, but it is blessedly limited. By Peter Monaghan.
