Variety (August 1973): Led Zeppelin Wraps Up U.S. Tour with Record Gates and $4-Million Gross

Led Zeppelin’s U.S. tour, which wound up at Madison Square Garden, N.Y. Sunday (29th), shattered attendance records, many previously held by the Beatles and grossed some $4,000,000. Latter figure for the 33 dates is unofficial as the British quartet began withholding such info after breaking Beatles marks to launch the tour in Atlanta and Tampa.

The Garden concert was the third consecutive sellout at the arena, where a $7.50 top usually means a $130,000 gross potential. The three Concerts East shows would come to $390,000. The May 4 opener at Braves Stadium, Atlanta, drew 39,236 patrons who paid $246,000, the largest concert crowd in Georgia’s history. Previously high was 33,000 drawn to the same stadium by the Beatles in 1965.

Next night, Led Zeppelin drew 56,800 to Tampa Stadium with a $309,000 gross. The previous mark for a single concert in the U.S. was believed to have been the $301,000 paid by 55,000 at the fames Beatles Shea Stadium, N.Y. concert, also in 1965.

The rockers, who performed without opening acts, played to more than 100,000 customers in California in less than a week, including a California record 39,304 at Kezar stadium, San Francisco, June 2. Previous mark of45, 000 was set by Grand Funk Railroad two years ago.

They sold out Dallas and Ft. Worth back to back, virtually unheard of previously, drawing 10,000 to Dallas Memorial Auditorium May 18 and 13,500 to Tarrant County Convention Centre.

The final New York show and the last concert of the 1973 Tour. The opening numbers are just powered through and Jimmy's playing is spectacular! "I gotta put you straight on a couple of things. This year in America we decided to work extra hard, so we did two tours and this is the last night of the last tour." stated Plant at the beginning of the concert. Jones is excellent on bass and turns in some great keyboard playing, especially on No Quarter. Dazed And Confused is an excellent version and by Stairway To Heaven, the band has left mere mortal status. Moby Dick is immensely long and rather boring but from Heartbreaker to the end, there is a riot that has the crowd, as well as the listener, in an absolute frenzy ... the music's that good!

The third and final night at Madison Square Garden used to create the 1976 concert film The Song Remains the Same and the live album of the same name. The tape begins with a brief soundcheck before Rock and Roll explodes out of the gate. Plant's voice starts off a bit rough, taking a few songs to warm up. Following Black Dog, he tells the crowd "this year in America, we decided to work extra hard, so we did two tours... and this is the last night of the last tour" adding "tonight we're gonna do our very best."

Page shreds through an excellent guitar solo as Jones explores a funky groove during Over the Hills and Far Away. As the song ends, Plant jokes "really, you could call this gig a fitness test... just to see if we can really still do it." Bonzo hammers at his drums with incredible intensity during Misty Mountain Hop. Since I've Been Loving You is dramatic and powerful. Page blazes through the guitar solos during The Song Remains the Same. Plant introduces Dazed and Confused as "one of the songs from Zeppelin's embryo." The San Francisco interlude is fantastic. The guitar solo/workout section is somewhat erratic. Page solos wildly during the outro.

Stairway to Heaven features an excellent guitar solo from Page. The end of the song is met with a tidal wave of deafening cheers from the crowd. Page's fingers fly across the fretboard during the a cappella solo in Heartbreaker. Bonzo and Jones lock into a high-speed funky rhythm as Page works his theramin wizardry during Whole Lotta Love. The Boogie Chillen' section features a fantastic guitar solo from Page. Bonzo plays a thunderous four-minute mini drum solo during the finale. Before The Ocean, Plant tells the crowd "tomorrow night I'll be lyin' on the grass in the middle of nowhere." Following an upbeat organ solo from Jones, the band closes the show with an outstanding performance of Thank You. A fitting finale to the 1973 North American tour.

Eric Clapton - 1974-07-09 - Montreal, Canada (SBD)

After returning to the stage in January 1973 at the Rainbow Concert, and finally kicking his addiction to heroin, Eric Clapton went into the studio in April 1973 to record his first solo album. The resulting disc, 461 Ocean Boulevard, went to #1 on the Billboard charts, as did the single I Shot The Sheriff, a remake of the Bob Marley classic. Clapton went on tour in the US in late June 1974, about the same time as the album was released. Incredibly, soundboard or FM recordings exist for almost every show of that tour. Those recordings reveal a more laid back EC, who was now battling a new addiction, alcohol. This soundboard captures him on July 9, 1974, 38 years ago today, at the Forum in Montreal. Download this one to hear EC, the man behind such legendary bands as Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and The Dominos, on his first solo tour.

The second show of the three night stand and the second to last of the 1973 tour, this is a very good, although somewhat loose show. Robert's voice alternates between being very strong and creaking a bit but it is surprisingly strong in Since I've Been Loving You and Stairway To Heaven. The band is playing very well, in a loose and exciting Dazed And Confused. Moby Dick is extremely long yet somewhat exciting and the last three numbers rock hard!

The second of three nights at Madison Square Garden used to create the 1976 concert film The Song Remains the Same and the live album of the same name. The show gets off to a somewhat sluggish start. Plant's voice is tired and weak, cracking and breaking frequently. Page's fingers get a bit sticky during the guitar solo in Black Dog. As the song ends, Plant tells the crowd "we had a really good one last night... what we intend to do is try and get it better every night." The instrumental section during No Quarter is a haunting death march, featuring an excellent guitar solo from Page. The Rain Song is beautiful.

Before Dazed and Confused, Plant tells the crowd "amongst the mêlée in 1968, we managed to meet in a tiny room, not half the size of this stage, and we all looked each other in the face and we all reckoned we'd got something to do that we hadn't quite done properly before." Page's fingers get stuck in the strings constantly as he solos wildly through the erratic guitar solo/workout section. The theramin freakout during Whole Lotta Love is preceded by a fantastic funky jam. Page blazes through the guitar solo during the Boogie Chillen' section. Before the band closes the show with The Ocean, Bonzo counts in "hoochie coo, one, two, three, four, hoochie coo!"

Review: Led Zeppelin Rocks to a Close at Garden

I saw the Friday opening of the Led Zeppelin concert from backstage, feeling the weight and response of the packed Madison Square Garden. It was possibly the best place to test the power of the British rock group, making the final dates of its current and very successful American tour.

And power it is – Led Zeppelin provides a kind of tent-show hard rock revivalism, healing and providing succor to the faithful, on a stage that throughout the evening became cluttered with smoke, dry-ice fumes and that most privileged of rock ‘n’ roll people, the film-maker.

Led Zeppelin remains unchanged. The group may perform different pieces, but the effect is the same. Jimmy Page’s lead guitar still dominates and mixes and merges with Robert Plant’s agile voice and Nureyev pirouetting to provide the basic essence of Zeppelin.

And Page is still into musical freakiness; dramatically dragging a violin bow across his guitar, he did his familiar squealing impersonation before boogieing off.

Page’s guitar more often than not sounds like thunder, but for all the power and fury at their disposal, the stage had much scaffolding on either side to hold the equipment, Zeppelin manages to provide some separation of instruments in the blare.

The group and the loyalty of its pilgrims out front (who remained shouting for an encore after the group had left) provide solidarity to hard rock. (NYTimes, July ’73)

Well ... a historic gem and only a portion! Plant introducing Stairway To Heaven saying: "I think this is a song of hope..." and he suddenly ad-libs "...and it's a very quiet song so shut up!" but only the first part of his introduction can be heard on movie and soundtrack. Bonham launching with a fury his drum introduction to Heartbreaker and then heavily leads the band with Whole Lotta Love.

The first of three nights at Madison Square Garden used to create the 1976 concert film The Song Remains the Same and the live album of the same name. The tape begins just after the first verse of an excellent The Rain Song. The heavy section is incredibly powerful. As the song ends, Plant tells the crowd "that was a sort of a love song" before introducing Dazed and Confused as "a very old one." Several shouts of "sit down!" can be heard coming from the crowd during the intro. Page's fingers fly across the fretboard during the frantic lead-in to the bow solo. The San Francisco interlude is both hauntingly beautiful and devastatingly heavy. The band is absolutely on fire during the outstanding guitar solo/workout section. Page shreds wildly during the outro. An incredibly powerful performance.

Before Stairway to Heaven, Plant tells the rowdy crowd "I think this is a song of hope... and it is a very quiet song, so shut up." Page's fingers get a bit sticky during an otherwise fantastic guitar solo, one of the best thus far. Someone in the crowd can be heard repeatedly shouting "The Ocean!" prior to Moby Dick, which Plant introduces by saying "ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Elvis Presley has now left the building." Page's fingers get stuck in the strings during the guitar solo in Heartbreaker. He blazes through the Boogie Chillen' section during Whole Lotta Love. As the song ends, Plant calls out "New York, goodnight." Strings of firecrackers crackle in the distance as the band returns to the stage to close the show with The Ocean.
