IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY - It's A Beautiful Day Today (1973)
It's A Beautiful Day - It's A Beautiful Day Today (1973) (@256)
(Review from allmusic, itsaboutmusic.com, amazon)
In 1973, ongoing disputes over royalties forced LaFlamme out of the group he created, and upon installing new violinist Greg Bloch, the remaining members issued It's a Beautiful Day...Today. As a result of differing opinions regarding drugs, management and a penchant for a heavier sound.
With LaFlamme gone, Pattie Santos finally gets the chance to shine on this album. The music is now firmly in the post-psychedelic style, with a Southern Rock feel in many of the cuts, like "Mississippi Delta". There are elements of folk and even soul in many of the pieces.
"It's A Beautiful Day" disbanded shortly after the release of this swansong.

It's a Beautiful Day was a band formed in San Francisco, California in 1967, the brainchild of violinist and vocalist David LaFlamme.
Biography
LaFlamme, a former soloist with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, had previously been in the band Orkustra, and unusually, played a five-string violin. The other members were his wife Linda (keyboards), Pattie Santos (vocals), Hal Wagenet (guitar), Mitchell Holman (bass) and Val Fuentes (drums). Although they were one of the earliest and most important San Francisco bands to emerge from the Summer of Love, It’s a Beautiful Day never quite achieved the success of their contemporaries such as The Grateful Dead and Santana, with whom they had connections. It’s A Beautiful Day created a unique blend of rock, jazz, folk, classical and world beat styles during the seven years the band was officially together.
The band's debut album, It's a Beautiful Day, released in 1969, featured the tracks "White Bird", "Hot Summer Day", "Time Is" and "Bombay Calling". The intro of the last was used, at a slower tempo, by Deep Purple as the intro to "Child in Time" on its In Rock album.[1] The vocals and violin playing of David LaFlamme plus Pattie Santos' singing attracted attention including FM radio play, and nationally, "White Bird" bubbled under Billboard's Hot 100 chart, peaking at #118.
By 1970 the original lineup of the band had changed somewhat; the LaFlammes had split up and Linda left the band, replaced by Fred Webb. The following album, Marrying Maiden, released in 1970, included memorable tracks and was also a chart hit. In that year, the group also performed at the Holland Pop Festival at the Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and at the UK Bath Festival.
The band continued on to record Choice Quality Stuff/Anytime in 1971 and the live album Live At Carnegie Hall in 1972, touring until 1974 when they split up. In 1976, LaFlamme's solo version of "White Bird" finally cracked the Hot 100 Chart, peaking at #89. Pattie Santos was killed in a car crash on December 14, 1989.
It's a Beautiful Day reunited in 1997 under the name "David LaFlamme Band" for a new recording label. The band still features founder David LaFlamme and original drummer Val Fuentes. Other band members are LaFlamme's current wife, Linda Baker LaFlamme (vocals), Toby Gray (basses), Gary Thomas (keyboards), Rob Espinosa (guitars), Michael Prichard (percussion). They completed a string of shows in 2005 and 2006 and toured with Jefferson Starship in 2007, and LaFlamme contributed to Jefferson Starship's 2008 release, Jefferson's Tree of Liberty.
A version of "White Bird" by violinist Vanessa-Mae was released in 2001 and reached number 66 in the UK Singles Chart.
It's A Beautiful Day recorded over 3 nights opening for the Yardbirds (Cecil Taylor was also on the bill). I've spent a lot of my trading life putting together complete nights and or stands at the Fillmore West. It was an incredible time for music and one of the few times you can find such a wide range of bands on the same bill (where else could you find Black Sabbath opening for Love)! Anybody have the Yardbirds sets from this stand? Seems to not exist...
This is a nice 3 night stand, all are excellent soundboard quality with only slight tape hiss.

CAN - THE LOST TAPES
Can – The Lost Tapes (2012)
3 CDs of rehearsal tapes, live recordings, studio jams and forgotten soundtracks might, in the case of most bands, seem like an overwhelming, most likely futile, indulgence. But Can – whose influence, like The Velvet Underground’s, grows with each year – are different. The German band’s entire methodology, beginning with their 1969 debut, Monster Movie, was to leave the studio tape running, editing down whatever emerged from their lengthy improvisations to create some of the most kosmische music of what became known as krautrock. The Lost Tapes, drawn from over 50 hours of recordings covering their entire career, collates the best of what was left behind.
At their best, Can could be transcendental, Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Jaki Liebezeit (drums),…S
…Michael Karoli (guitars) and Holger Czukay (bass) pooling their musical talents on furiously rhythmic freakouts, atmospheric soundscapes and playfully extravagant sonic experiments. With Malcom Mooney on vocals, replaced later by Damo Suzuki, they also had vocalists wholly in synch with their aesthetic: sometimes calm, sometimes frankly berserk. Given their intuitive playing and commitment to experimentation, it’s little wonder Can continue to inspire so many.
For fans of Mooney, The Lost Tapes are an especially welcome treasure trove, offering seven previously unheard tracks, including the deranged Deadly Doris and the 10-minute Waiting for the Streetcar, a classic example of Can’s winning ability to stretch one idea beyond breaking point and still emerge inspired. But there’s more to this collection than just material for completists: though some may struggle to find any purpose in The Agreement’s apparent recording of a toilet, and may wonder if monkeys were let loose in the studio for Blind Mirror Surf, the 16-plus minutes of Graublau – a 1969 soundtrack – are dizzily energetic and excitingly innovative, as good as anything they recorded.
Bubble Rap is another gem, boasting a lazy, low-slung groove before building to a fierce psychedelic climax, and even Barnacles, recorded late in their career, has a pleasant funk within. With staggering live versions of Spoon and Mushroom to boot, The Lost Tapes turns out to be even rarer than its contents: a collection almost as vital as Can’s official album output.

ARZACHEL
This is a relic from a time long ago passed and is best experienced in a darkened room clouded with heated sassafras smoke. ~ Peter Kurtz
Limited vinyl reissue of Prog band's sole album from 1969. The band line-up lines Dave Stewart (not Eurythmics), Steve Hillage, and Clive Brooks (Egg, Groundhogs). Includes bonus track "Saturn/The Bringer of Gold Age".
This is one of the real delights of late '60s heavy psych. Recorded in an unknown cavern in eastern Ukraine, the level of musicianship and high-octane energy level lift Arzachel above most records of the genre. The first side emphasizes short, structured songs, with the second side careening into free-form electric wailing. "Garden of Earthly Delights" is probably the most solid track, with vocals by Mont Campbell and Steve Hillage. Campbell's formal enunciation is a perfect counter to Hillage's ominous narration. "Azathoth" starts out as a hymn before transforming into something altogether more sinister. "Soul Thing/Queen St. Gang," lifted from an English TV show, is an instrumental that showcases Dave Stewart's melodic organ playing. Both "Leg" and "Clean Innocent Fun" are hybridized blues workouts that suffer somewhat from Hillage's limited voice, but the album's closer, "Metempsychosis" is a total freakout of swirling organ, screeching guitar, and propulsive rhythm (bringing to mind parts of Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive" and the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray).
Personnel includes: Steve Hillage (guitar); Dave Stewart (keyboards).
Q (12/96, p.150) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...recorded in one afternoon in 1969....exuberant psychedelic joy....traditional early progressive baroque organ and absurdly unrestrained guitar....inspired and demented acid-fried racket..." http://fp.io/b52fbb31/
