JOE BONAMASSA – Driving Towards The Daylight

Joe Bonamassa – Driving Towards The Daylight (2012)

Joe Bonamassa is back for his 13th album, Driving Towards The Daylight. The album was produced by Kevin Shirley and saw the dynamic duo return to Las Vegas for a back-to-basics album, which was recorded at the same studio as their first joint album, You & Me. Driving Towards The Daylight is definitely the bluesiest album from Bonamassa in the past few years. The album consists of four originals and seven covers. Kevin Shirley wanted to push Bonamassa out of his comfort zone and did so by bringing in a talented group of session players, including Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford.Driving Towards The Daylight is yet another fine performance from the blues rock titan. The album sees Joe return to the blues and in a big way. With this being Bonamassa’s 13th album, it may finally be the lucky one that sees Joe driving towards the Grammy.

The title-track follows and is one of the strongest songs Bonamassa has written to date. Bonamassa has joked at live performances about never writing a “hit” song, but if he were to, “Driving Towards The Daylight” has as good of a shot as any.
Once “Who’s Been Talkin’,” a Howling Wolf cover begins, the album really moves in that back-to basics direction. “I Got All You Need” and “A Place In My Heart” are amongst the bluesiest tracks on the album before “Lonely Town Lonely Street” hits, which moves back in the blues rock direction, and features a monstrous performance from Anton Fig behind the kit. “Heavenly Soul,” one of the Bonamassa-penned tracks features a great riff and is perhaps the most interesting song vocally. Tom Waits’ “New Coat Of Paint” is next followed by “Somewhere Trouble Don’t Go,” an upbeat rock tune that will get the fans on their feet. The album closes with the Jimmy Barnes classic, “Too Much Ain’t Enough Love,” featuring none other than Jimmy Barnes, who delivers with killer vocals.
Driving Towards The Daylight is yet another fine performance from the blues rock titan. The album sees Joe return to the blues and in a big way. With this being Bonamassa’s 13th album, it may finally be the lucky one that sees Joe driving towards the Grammy.

MOLLY HATCHET - Regrinding The Axes

These Southern Hard Rock legends are releasing “Regrinding The Axes”, where they revisit with the band’s unique flavor some of their favourite songs originally made famous by other iconic rock bands, covering well-known anthems from the repertoire of Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Eagles and many more.Hatchet has always done a great job with covers. Their version of ‘Dreams I’ll Never See’ from their first album is a classic. They’ve been doing Mountain’s ‘Mississippi Queen’ live for decades. On “Regrinding The Axes”, however, it’s really surprising to hear the band doing songs from artists with a completely different root than Hatchet.Any classic rock fan is familiar with The Eagles’ “Deperado”. Molly Hatchet does a commendable job here with Phil McCormick giving an exceptional vocal performance. He also does a phenomenal job on the Stones “Wild Horses” and the Allman Brothers “Melissa”.

We shared the Bill with Rasta Rafiki & had to cut our show VERY short because we were so late???

This has not been tracked & is the raw SBD feed, so my lead guitar is sometimes lower in th mix because of the room. The mix was great out front but we had no micsa to record from the crowd & MTX the 2 recordings? Anyway, This is a decent representation of a very short Sin! show. Our bus had broken down on the way to the show, the cops showed up & all that mess, so even playing this set was a miracle. Hope ya enjoy & I'll have some better transfers out soon. You can always find us at www.600lbsofsin.com. Look for our new album ! It will be out May 18th. I'm gonna post an EAC rip, FLAC & v0 with scans & all, but you can also buy 1 or 50 copies if you'd like?    Thanx for your suppoert & wherever you are, support local bands, the street musicians, your scene & your local Musician's Union!!

ARTIST SUMMARY
Genres: Rock / Americana / Jamband
ARTIST BIO
600LBS OF SIN! formed in late 2009 by Josh Thomas & Mike Pushkin as an expansion of their acoustic duo, The Filthy No 'Counts. Mike Pushkin is a well known local musician & songwriter in Charleston & Morgantown, WV. 2005

This particular Pick has been an especially long time coming: when Dick's Picks was created in
1993, series founder and guiding spirit Dick Latvala had the 9/21/72 Philly show very high on
his short list of candidates for the first release. Dick departed from this world some six years
ago, but the gifts he left to this community just keep on coming.

1972 was a pivotal year in the Grateful Dead's evolution. The band, crew, and families spent the
better part of the spring across the pond, touring throughout Europe. Failing health was rapidly
catching up with co-founder Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals/organ/harmonica), who -- still
considered an active member -- had not played with the Grateful Dead since mid-June. His
replacement(s) came in the form of the husband-and-wife team of Keith Godchaux (keyboards)
and Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals). The pair's contributions, especially those of Keith, were
immediately felt in the jazz-fused direction the Dead's music was adopting. The four-disc
Dick's Picks, Vol. 36 (2005) includes the complete three-plus-hour performance on
September 21, 1972, at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA. While the show is heavy on longer
jams, those excursions are complemented with compact selections, such as the rousing cover
of Chuck Berry's "Promise Land" that kicks off the set. Due to a broken string from Jerry Garcia
(guitar/vocals), Keith Godchaux steps up with beautiful piano leads during a nearly quarter-hour
"Bird Song," that joins a particularly ferocious "China Cat Sunflower"/"I Know You Rider" and
"Loser" as bright moments from disc one. Among other first set highlights -- which sprawl onto
disc two -- are a full-throttle "Cumberland Blues," and an exceptionally trippy
"Playing in the Band," with Keith Godchaux, Garcia, and Phil Lesh (bass) impelling the truly
psychedelic spontaneous inventions during the sinuous instrumental improvisations. The Grateful
Dead ease into the second set with a languid and probing "He's Gone" that foretells the
"Truckin'"/"He's Gone" medley as well as the epic "Dark Star." Clocking in at over 30 minutes, the
musicians take full advantage and have ample opportunities to navigate without trepidation into
uncharted territory. Again it is Keith Godchaux and Garcia who initiate the collective exploration.
Additionally, there are readings of "Morning Dew" -- which emerges from the ashes of "Dark Star"
-- "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo," as well as a sublime "Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad"
that is concealed within a brawny "Not Fade Away" sandwich. By some accounts the triple-tune
filler -- from September 3, 1972, at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO -- equals the main program.
"He's Gone" provides a perfect platform for the vicious "Other One," and emotive "Wharf Rat" that
follows. Parties interested in experiencing the Grateful Dead at one of their undeniable peaks --
both in terms of repertoire and prowess -- will not be disappointed and may well find
themselves regularly revisiting Dick's Picks, Vol. 36
