2005

This particular Pick has been an especially long time coming: when Dick's Picks was created in
1993, series founder and guiding spirit Dick Latvala had the 9/21/72 Philly show very high on
his short list of candidates for the first release. Dick departed from this world some six years
ago, but the gifts he left to this community just keep on coming.

1972 was a pivotal year in the Grateful Dead's evolution. The band, crew, and families spent the
better part of the spring across the pond, touring throughout Europe. Failing health was rapidly
catching up with co-founder Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals/organ/harmonica), who -- still
considered an active member -- had not played with the Grateful Dead since mid-June. His
replacement(s) came in the form of the husband-and-wife team of Keith Godchaux (keyboards)
and Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals). The pair's contributions, especially those of Keith, were
immediately felt in the jazz-fused direction the Dead's music was adopting. The four-disc
Dick's Picks, Vol. 36 (2005) includes the complete three-plus-hour performance on
September 21, 1972, at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA. While the show is heavy on longer
jams, those excursions are complemented with compact selections, such as the rousing cover
of Chuck Berry's "Promise Land" that kicks off the set. Due to a broken string from Jerry Garcia
(guitar/vocals), Keith Godchaux steps up with beautiful piano leads during a nearly quarter-hour
"Bird Song," that joins a particularly ferocious "China Cat Sunflower"/"I Know You Rider" and
"Loser" as bright moments from disc one. Among other first set highlights -- which sprawl onto
disc two -- are a full-throttle "Cumberland Blues," and an exceptionally trippy
"Playing in the Band," with Keith Godchaux, Garcia, and Phil Lesh (bass) impelling the truly
psychedelic spontaneous inventions during the sinuous instrumental improvisations. The Grateful
Dead ease into the second set with a languid and probing "He's Gone" that foretells the
"Truckin'"/"He's Gone" medley as well as the epic "Dark Star." Clocking in at over 30 minutes, the
musicians take full advantage and have ample opportunities to navigate without trepidation into
uncharted territory. Again it is Keith Godchaux and Garcia who initiate the collective exploration.
Additionally, there are readings of "Morning Dew" -- which emerges from the ashes of "Dark Star"
-- "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo," as well as a sublime "Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad"
that is concealed within a brawny "Not Fade Away" sandwich. By some accounts the triple-tune
filler -- from September 3, 1972, at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO -- equals the main program.
"He's Gone" provides a perfect platform for the vicious "Other One," and emotive "Wharf Rat" that
follows. Parties interested in experiencing the Grateful Dead at one of their undeniable peaks --
both in terms of repertoire and prowess -- will not be disappointed and may well find
themselves regularly revisiting Dick's Picks, Vol. 36

BROTHERS OF A FEATHER - Live At The Roxy is a live album by Chris and Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes.

Brothers Of A Feather: Live At The Roxy is a live album by Chris and Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes. It was released on July 10, 2007, and was later followed by a DVD release with extra tracks in September, 2007. The album features two new songs, some old Black Crowes songs, as well as some covers. The album is a compilation from several shows at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, California recorded during the 2006 Brothers of a Feather tour. The show features an intimate duet performance by the Robinson brothers, with most of the songs featuring only one or two guitars and vocals, with occasional accompaniment from Mona Lisa Young and Charity White, the Black Crowes' backing vocals duo, as well as a guest appearance by Tenor Saxophonist Dave Ellis of The Left Coast Horns. - wikipedia

TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND – Everybody’s Talkin’

Tedeschi Trucks Band – Everybody’s Talkin’ (2012)

On May 22, Tedeschi Trucks Band will release Everybody’s Talkin‘, their sophomore album in their second full year as a band. The uplifting, energy-packed double-disc set by the 11-piece ensemble led by husband-wife team Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi that recently marked their first anniversary with a Grammy win for their debut album Revelator.
TTB shows off a stunning rate of musical progress on Everybody’s Talkin’, eleven tracks selected from a year’s worth of concerts from around the globe plus one new track (“Nobody’s Free”). The performances—a hearty blend of originals and spirited covers of rock, R&B and even gospel classics—capture the group’s roots- rich musical mix, laced with Truck’s signature slide-guitar…
…sound and fronted by Tedeschi’s pliant, honey-to-husky voice (as well as her own gritty guitar-work). The collection also includes all of the joyful, spontaneous energy that has helped TTB build a growing circle of fans and earned them an unprecedented string of triumphs in just the past few months.

Included notes: What can be said about this legendary Allman Brothers Band set that
hasn't been said before? Not much, but for the sake of those unfamiliar with this
particular show, here they are, the original lineup, performing the last set
ever to be played at the venerable Fillmore East.

Country influences were not yet prominent in the group’s sound, but their
unique blend of rock, blues and jazz was reaching stratospheric regions by
this point. Duane Allman and Dickey Betts’ telepathic lead guitar playing
combined with Berry Oakley's incredibly inventive, melodic bass to achieve a
pure, improvisational genius, equal to the likes of the greatest jazz
performers. Add Gregg Allman's bluesy organ, authentic gritty vocals and the
dynamic, propulsive drumming duo of Johanson and Trucks, and you have
one of the most innovative and captivating bands to ever play the Fillmore.

After the classic Bill Graham introduction, the group warms up with
"Statesboro Blues." After three more, relatively short bluesy numbers - all of
which are played wonderfully - they get down to serious business on "In
Memory Of Elizabeth Reed." Here, the band takes flight, soaring upward with
Betts' and Allman's inspired guitar playing, riffs vacillating from beautiful to
furious. This is also a testament to Berry Oakley's bass playing as an integral
melodic factor to the band's overall sound.

Following a straightforward, concise rendition of "Midnight Rider," the band
takes flight again on the fierce, propulsive instrumental "Hot ‘Lanta." Next up
is the ever popular "Whipping Post," here stretched out to almost twenty
minutes of epic jamming that never loses interest as Duane Allman explores
the farthest reaches of possibility on slide guitar. With the band's allotted
time having just run out, Bill Graham returns to the stage to say thanks and
goodbye to the Fillmore East audience. The band, still hungry to play, begins
the classic riff that launches "You Don't Love Me," and before you know it,
are off on another epic jam that would go down in history as the last song
ever played at the Fillmore East.

Of course nobody knew it at the time, but Duane Allman had less than 100
days left to live after this performance. He would be killed in a motorcycle
accident on October 29, 1971 in Macon, Georgia, when his bike collided
with a truck. Approximately a year after that tragic loss, Berry Oakley died
in another motorcycle accident, only three blocks away from the site of Allman's
fatal accident, on November 11, 1972.
