PETE TOWNSHEND – The Quadrophenia Demos (2011/2012)
Pete Townshend – The Quadrophenia Demos (2011/2012)
Quadrophenia has got to be one of The Who’s most widely recognized albums. The first of two exclusive 10? EPs featuring six demos from the` Director’s Cut’ re-release of the landmark 1973 QUADROPHENIA album produced, authorized and overseen by Pete Townshend. This individually numbered 10? EP will be the first of two Record Store Day exclusives. The combined two releases encompass 11 of the demos from the forthcoming box set, and provide a unique insight into the creation of this landmark album. As a companion piece to last year’s Black Friday release, The Quadrophenia Demos 1, we get The Quadrophenia Demos 2! It’s enthralling to hear what Pete Townshend created by himself without the rest of The Who. And while the rest of the band may…
…have added balls to the sound, Townshend’s demos are pretty fully fleshed out. The EP features demo versions of “I’ve Had Enough,” “Drowned,” “Is It Me,” “Dr. Jimmy” and “Love Reign O’er Me.” Limited edition 10? vinyl.

REVIEW
by Steve Leggett
The Wood Brothers play a sort of Americana version of jazz, or country with an edge, or folk with some rhythmic bite, or maybe secular gospel that faces darkness with a wry and stubborn hopefulness. It's really hard to pin these guys down into a precise category. Chris Wood's tight, fluid, and always surprising basslines are a big part of why this group works, but so too are his brother Oliver Wood's songs, which are easygoing on the surface, but reveal sharply observed personal story lines that reach against odds toward ragged redemption. This live set features the duo with drummer Jano Rix and Clay Cook guesting on lap steel, and while these songs have already appeared on Wood Brothers releases, the live format shows just how sturdy and fluid this band actually is, and the songs seem to unfold and flow at the center of it all. "One More Day" has a gray-day feel, but the dogged hopefulness of having "one more day" makes this otherwise sad song into one of elegantly resigned joy. "Smoke Ring Halo" is a simply fascinating and charming song, framed perfectly by Chris Wood's bass and Rix's sparse, precise drumming. Oliver Wood's droll, offhand, and sometimes fragile singing style fits his songs perfectly, and when he sings "Don't let the angels take your smoke ring halo," it's obvious how good a songwriter he is. "Stumbled In," a song about literally stumbling into Heaven, is another gem, part country, part gospel, part honky tonk jazz, and the band pulls it all off with sparse sharpness. At times the Wood Brothers sound like a stripped-down alt-folk version of the Band, or maybe the perfect opening act for Tom Waits, and captured live, Chris Wood's stunning basslines and Oliver Wood's quietly brilliant songs take everything into some pretty interesting and refreshing territory. This is Vol. 1, so more live material is still on its way. Undoubtedly it will further reveal what a fine little band this is.

JERRY GARCIA , DAVID GRISMAN TONY RICE - THE PIZZA TAPES VOL 1-3
Chances are, the most devoted fans of these three musicians have heard these tunes before, thanks to the crafty pizza-delivery boy who filched the tapes from Garcia's kitchen soon after they were recorded in 1993. That said, the warm, intimate performances here are very much worth an official CD release. The sessions came about when Tony Rice was in Northern California to record the delightful duet-collection Tone Poems with David Grisman. Garcia stopped by to hang out and jam with his old buddy Grisman and with Rice, one of his guitar idols. The disc retains all of the joy and spontaneity you'd expect from such an informal setting--Grisman even elected to leave in the between-song banter, which mostly consists of genuine overflowing mutual praise. The music itself, primarily traditional folk songs, is quite engaging thanks to Garcia's affecting, soulful, pained vocals and to the picking of all three. The contrast in flat-picking-guitar styles makes for an interesting combination: while Rice is technically superb, marvelously quick, and of remarkably clarion tone, Garcia is much more emotional and visceral, feeling his way along. There are a handful of exploratory, off-the-cuff jams that add to the impulsive nature of the whole project. Had the threesome actually intended this to be released, it probably wouldn't have the appeal it does, for this is the product of friends and music lovers, not recording artists.
Back in February 1993, David Grisman invited Jerry Garcia to join himself and Tony Rice in the studio. The trio performed together over two days on February 4 and February 5. As the story has it, Garcia’s recording were stolen soon afterwards by a pizza delivery boy and eventually leaked out to the public via a series of bootlegs. In 2000 Grisman released portions of the sessions as The Pizza Tapes. Now Grisman is offering an “Extra Large” 170 minute version of The Pizza Tapes through Acoustic Oasis, Grisman’s new download-based label. The Pizza Tapes – Extra Large Edition offers 16 previously unissued alternate takes along with the original master takes in their original sequence. - amazon.com

SANTANA - SHAPE SHIFTER
2012 release from the guitar legend. Shape Shifter is Carlos Santana's 36th album and is a 13-song instrumental tour de force featuring tracks spanning from the late 1990's to the present and comprises mostly original compositions that have been stashed away for such an instrumental project. Carlos has dedicated Shape Shifter to Native Americans. Referencing recent official apologies to the native peoples of Australia and the U.S., he says, "I encourage any and all countries (that have not as yet done so) to acknowledge the first people of their land, and make this a collective global effort." Among the noteworthy songs on the album are "Mr. Szabo" - an homage to Hungarian jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo, who composed the Santana classic "Gypsy Queen" - and "Eres la Luz," the only tune featuring vocals, which are provided by Santana singers Andy Vargas and Tony Lindsay. Closing out Shape Shifter are "Canela" and "Ah, Sweet Dancer," two songs that include guest appearances from Carlos' son, pianist Salvador Santana. - amazon.com

TREVOR RABIN - Jacaranda
Trevor Rabin – Jacaranda (2012)
It’s been said that writing about music is a bit like dancing about architecture. When you’re talking about one of the most accomplished musicians and composers working today, this observation is something of an understatement. When discussing an artistic and challenging achievement like Trevor Rabin’s Jacaranda, a writer really has to strain for on-target adjectives and terms to describe this richly varied and multi-dimensional musical soundscape.
To begin, South African-born Trevor Rabin has worked with the likes of Seal, Michael Jackson, Manfred Mann, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, and Paul Rodgers. He’s best known for his award-winning tenure with Yes as guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He’s composed film scores for Armageddon,…
…Remember the Titans, National Treasure, Get Smart, and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. For Jacaranda, Rabin composed all 12 songs, arranged and produced the entire album, and with a few exceptions played all the multi-layered instruments himself.
While Rabin’s world-class guitar work is the driving force of the album, his first studio release since 1989’s Can’t Look Away, he shows off his considerable keyboard chops as well. He does turn to some accomplished players to give him versatile rhythmic support, notably drummers Lou Molino III, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Rabin’s son Ryan Rabin (on the appropriately titled “Me and My Boy”). All that’s missing are any guest appearances from fellow Yes alumni or any of Rabin’s signature vocals.
Now for some architecture dancing, that is, attempting to describe the music of Jacaranda. On one level, one might be reminded of The Dixie Dregs, especially the Steve Morse (guitar) and Mark Parrish (keyboards) jazz/rock fusions and their Southern flavor. Likewise, many of Rabin’s performances easily fit under the jazz and fusion umbrella. His love of the Dobro, which he uses on nearly every track, gives his compositions hints of bluegrass and rockabilly instrumentations. But you’ve never heard this recipe in any form like this before.
Rock roots are evident from the start as well. Fast-fingered, note-bending, interweaving guitars and shifting tempos introduce “Spider Boogie,” which features Yes-like keyboards. In fact, several tracks sound a bit like what might have happened if Yes recorded an album in Nashville, wanting to bring some Americana into their mix. Tracks like “Through The Tunnel” open with pedal-steel guitars before soaring with electric runs that Jeff Beck would envy. Likewise, “The Branch Office” sounds like what might have happened if Beck had been backed by Led Zeppelin’s rhythm section. Speaking of Beck, the British blues/rock/jazz fusion pioneer’s former bass guitarist, Tal Wilkenfeld, guests on “Anerley Road.”
But the versatility of Jacaranda goes well beyond nods to Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, etc. “Market Street,” “Storks Bill Geranium Waltz,” and “Freethought” reach back to the more traditional Les Paul, Wes Montgomery, and Django Reinhardt school of picking melodies. One standout, “Rescue,” is far more symphonic. Orchestral instrumentation and ethereal vocals from Liz Constintine segue into affirming power chords and an extended piano solo evocative of Mr. J.S. Bach. It’s like a cinematic overture, a track inspired by the film The Guardian, for which Rabin contributed to the score.
One distinction between the brilliant, beautiful Jacaranda, and other sets showcasing virtuoso players, is the tightness of the compositions. This isn’t an album of jams and improvisations. Some tracks are extremely short. All have an obvious framework with beginnings, middle sections, and conclusions, often with wildly different time signatures and tones. When three or more complex melody lines are performed simultaneously, there’s no need to stretch out the time. One of the primary delights of this album, in fact, is listening to the multi-tracked parts and hearing how they’ve been integrated into such jaw-dropping, cohesive wholes. One suspects a live performance of any of these selections is virtually impossible unless Rabin would bring aboard players of equal ability, such as his Yes compatriots.
Jacaranda is for music lovers of any genre. Period. It’s astonishing, haunting, passionate, powerful, and an experience that transcends any expectations, even for devotees of Rabin’s past work. After hearing Jacaranda, you’ll fully understand how difficult it is to dance about architecture.
