CAMEL - Gods of Light (Live 1973-75)

Camel - Gods of Light (Live 1973-75)

(Review from progarchives.com)

Recorded back in 1973-75, this live snippet from the early days of Camel perfectly showcases the strengths and talents of this band. All 5 tracks on this recording are killer Camel. These early tracks reveal a slightly rawer more instrumental based sound and a slightly more playful side.

"Arubaluba" is the unusual track never published before within a live album and contains such an interesting jam-session; therefore the presence of a classic melodic mini-suite like "Lady Fantasy" is a natural "purpose" for all the fans of Camel; as well as the excerpts from their most famous suite "The Snow Goose" are regarded always like other must-have numbers...

"Snow Goose" clicking in over 27 minutes and having been lifted from a BBC recording in 1975. The cool thing about this is that there is no orchestra and you get a live in studio rendition of this prog masterpiece by the 4 members. Without a question the combo of Andy Latimer and Peter Bardens were something special and you can hear this musically in their approach and tight interplay.

This set is a great addition to any Camel fan from today and yesterday.

Line-up :
- Andrew Latimer / guitar, vocals
- Peter Bardens / keyboards, vocals
- Doug Ferguson / bass, vocals
- Andy Ward / drums

02. White Rider (8:52)
03. Lady Fantasy (11:33)
04. Arubaluba (6:50)

PHIL GUY & LURRIE BELL - CHICAGO'S HOTTEST GUITARS!

Lurrie Bell is a blues guitarist and singer. His father was renowned blues harmonica player Carey Bell. Phil Guy (1940 - 2008) was an American blues guitarist. He was the younger brother of Buddy Guy. He didn't eclipse his older brother Buddy's status as a blues superstar, and in reality, Phil's funky brand of blues was not captured correctly for posterity. But he remained an active attraction on the Chicago circuit, following in his sibling's footsteps and patiently waiting for his own star to rise up until his death. Like his sibling, Phil Guy played with harpist Raful Neal (for a decade) before leaving the Baton Rouge scene for Chicago in 1969. There he played with his brother's high-energy organization as well as behind harpist Junior Wells (Phil handled guitar duties with Sammy Lawhorn on Wells' underrated mid-'70s Delmark album On Tap). Phil Guy cut albums of his own for JSP; they were generally lacking in originality if not spirit. Phil Guy lost his battle with liver and kidney cancer in August of 2008.

PINETOP PERKINS - Heaven

Pinetop Perkins – Heaven (2012)

Pinetop Perkins was a three time Grammy Award winner and the dean of blues piano players when he passed away last year, just four months shy of his 98th birthday.
Perkins played piano until he was 97 years old, so this previously unreleased set featuring Perkins relaxed and nimble in both solo and small-combo studio sessions in 1986, when he was a young 73 years old, is really just a drop in the bucket of his long career (which began in 1969 when he replaced Otis Spann as Muddy Waters’ piano player). But it is indeed a heavenly drop at that, since Perkins is so obviously comfortable here. Among the highlights are versions of “Sitting on Top of the World,” with longtime friend Willie “Big Eyes” Smith on vocals, and “Since I Fell for You,” featuring… — AMG
the soulful voice of Otis Clay.
On “44 Blues,” his rough, almost incomprehensible vocals are the perfect counterpoint to his smooth, gliding piano style, punctuated here and there by a few left handed shots to make sure you’re paying attention. “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” is Willie Big Eyes Smith’s last known recording, with Perkins rolling along behind, tossing out graceful, but muscular trills. Even if you’ve heard him do his signature tune, “Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie,” on earlier recordings, this rollicking solo version is one of his best, with ‘Top obviously enjoying himself, talking a mile a minute as he gallops along. Ironically, even though Perkins is associated with the song, the tune was written by another Pinetop, Clarence “Pinetop” Smith, in 1928.
Perkins sounds relaxed and comfortable throughout this session, roaring through a bouncy version of “Sweet Home Chicago,” making up lyrics as he goes, enticing his darlin’ to come along to his adopted home town for a throwdown. The pianist trots out his crooning skills for “Pinetop’s Blues,” sounding like a much younger man. He turns the jazz standard “Willow Weep For Me” upside down, gently nudging it along in a boogie-woogie gait that sounds like it was custom fitted by his personal tailor.
Heaven is a fitting epitaph for Perkins, who died in March of last year at the age of 97. Even though he’s no longer with us, his notes are still trickling down in a heavenly shower. All you have to do is listen.
