PINETOP PERKINS - Heaven
Pinetop Perkins – Heaven (2012)
Pinetop Perkins was a three time Grammy Award winner and the dean of blues piano players when he passed away last year, just four months shy of his 98th birthday.
Perkins played piano until he was 97 years old, so this previously unreleased set featuring Perkins relaxed and nimble in both solo and small-combo studio sessions in 1986, when he was a young 73 years old, is really just a drop in the bucket of his long career (which began in 1969 when he replaced Otis Spann as Muddy Waters’ piano player). But it is indeed a heavenly drop at that, since Perkins is so obviously comfortable here. Among the highlights are versions of “Sitting on Top of the World,” with longtime friend Willie “Big Eyes” Smith on vocals, and “Since I Fell for You,” featuring… — AMG
the soulful voice of Otis Clay.
On “44 Blues,” his rough, almost incomprehensible vocals are the perfect counterpoint to his smooth, gliding piano style, punctuated here and there by a few left handed shots to make sure you’re paying attention. “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” is Willie Big Eyes Smith’s last known recording, with Perkins rolling along behind, tossing out graceful, but muscular trills. Even if you’ve heard him do his signature tune, “Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie,” on earlier recordings, this rollicking solo version is one of his best, with ‘Top obviously enjoying himself, talking a mile a minute as he gallops along. Ironically, even though Perkins is associated with the song, the tune was written by another Pinetop, Clarence “Pinetop” Smith, in 1928.
Perkins sounds relaxed and comfortable throughout this session, roaring through a bouncy version of “Sweet Home Chicago,” making up lyrics as he goes, enticing his darlin’ to come along to his adopted home town for a throwdown. The pianist trots out his crooning skills for “Pinetop’s Blues,” sounding like a much younger man. He turns the jazz standard “Willow Weep For Me” upside down, gently nudging it along in a boogie-woogie gait that sounds like it was custom fitted by his personal tailor.
Heaven is a fitting epitaph for Perkins, who died in March of last year at the age of 97. Even though he’s no longer with us, his notes are still trickling down in a heavenly shower. All you have to do is listen.

PETER GREEN - ALONE WITH THE BLUES
After acknowledging Eric Clapton and George Harrison in the audience at a concert at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1969, B.B. King was heard to have said 'But I've got to say that I'm sorry, Peter Green is best'. With this budget-priced 16 track compilation featuring over 30 years of great recordings by one of the world's best blues guitarists, you and your customers will probably be of the same opinion! From recent solo work through classic early Fleetwood Mac tracks and even earlier John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers cuts, this is an essential overview of the development of one of rock's most intriguing, talented and misunderstood enigmas. Out of the dozens of The Grateful Dead spin-off bands, none has been more consistently successful at capturing the exploratory essence of the original experience than Phil Lesh & Friends. Lesh and his ever-evolving cast of characters have maintained a level of excellence that few other improvisational jambands can lay claim to and all have proven adept at the long, exploratory jams that were a trademark of the Dead. An air of unpredictability was always at the core of the Grateful Dead experience and this is something Lesh thoroughly understands and embraces in every performance.
An ongoing project for well over a decade now, the consistent factors are bassist Phil Lesh and drummer John Molo, arguably one of the most adventurous and melodically sophisticated rock rhythm sections ever. Acclaimed for breathing new life into the Grateful Dead's vast repertoire, including long abandoned material deemed too difficult to perform, Lesh specifically recruits friends who are comfortable with these challenges and who enjoy playing without boundaries. In addition to the Dead material, they explore an unlimited range of covers, spanning nearly every musical genre over the past century. Blues, rock, country, jazz, avant garde, are all fuel for Phil Lesh & Friends and this irreverence for any one tradition, while simultaneously appreciating all of them, is one of the appealing facets that continue to draw legions of fans from far and wide.
The performance presented here is a particularly interesting one, as not only does it capture the Phil & Friends experience early on it's development, but also features a spectacular one-off lineup that would unfortunately never be repeated. Recorded at the 1999 Mountain Aire Music Festival on a beautiful sunny day at Calavaras County Fairgrounds, this permutation of Phil & Friends features Lesh and Molo providing the foundation for soloists, Warren Haynes and Steve Kimock on guitars and one of the most gifted Bay Area musicians of all time, keyboardist Merl Saunders, who had sparked Jerry Garcia to many of his creative peaks. In addition to this core quintet, former Grateful Dead harmony vocalist, Donna Jean Godchaux-McKay lends her voice to the proceedings.
The first set of the afternoon contains four extended sequences, beginning with a nice breezy take on The Allman Brother's classic "Blue Sky" to set the scene. A pairing of the Phish song "Wolfman's Brother" with "Bertha" comes next. Although the vocals are primarily a shambles, both serve to gradually increase momentum for the rest of the set, which really begins taking off on the next sequence.
As shaky as the vocals were up to this point, Warren Haynes redeems the band on that front by delivering the most penetrating vocal of the entire set on his own "Patchwork Quilt," which has the band burning at a new intensity level. This is a wonderful performance in every regard, with no better example of Lesh's beautiful melodic bass work right up front in the mix. As the final verse trails off, Lesh and Molo propel the group into a jam on "The Other One," one of the Dead's primary jam vehicles. Things continue to heat up and then really take off after they launch into "Confusion." Once Merle struggles through the vocal, this becomes one hot funky jam, with everyone contributing. In fact, Lesh has never sounded funkier than he does right here and the jam heads for the psychedelic stratosphere where the band remains for the duration of this set.
In fact, they close this first set by pairing two classic Lennon songs from The Beatles "Revolver" album that have literally come to define the psychedelic stratosphere in terms of music, "She Said She Said," which was written about an acid trip experience and the apocalyptic "Tomorrow Never Knows."

PAVLOV'S DOG / LIVE AND UNLEASHED (2011)
"Live and Unleashed" is the first Pavlov's Dog livealbum in it's 36 year history. The band is touring again regulary since 2004, and receives terrific reviews for energetic, emotional, and congenial concerts. "Live and Unleashed"captures the unique spirit of a Pavlov's Dog show authentically. The 7 piece live-lineup, incl. violin, melotron, piano, guitar and David Surkamp's unique voice, generates the typical Pavlov's Dog sound. Some arrangements are quite different to the studio versions, and overall the band is live more heavy. Powerful rock songs such as Breaking Ice or Looking For My Shadow, take turns with ballads such as Standing Here With You or Angel's Twilight Jump. Branded by beautiful violin melodies and Surkamp's affecting vocals, Pavlov's Dog live gives the heebie-jeebies for granted. Live and unleashed comprehends a cross-section of all Pavlov's Dog and David Surkamp periods. The album contains not only tracks of any Pavlov's Dog album, but as well Heart Of Mine (a track originally by HIFI, Surkamp's band in the 80ies together with Ian Matthews), and with Wrong and Looking For My Shadow two tracks of Surkamp's 2006 soloalbum Dancing On The Edge Of A Teacup. And despite Live and unleashed was recorded in 2009, it comprehends already four tracks of the brand new studioalbum Echo & Boo, which was released in 2010. - germusica.com

JOHN CIPOLLINA - Raven (1980 great us west coast rock - 2006 reissue - Flac)
John Cipollina - Raven (1980 great us west coast rock - 2006 reissue - Flac)
I saw John Cipollina once, playing with Man at Newcastle City Hall in the 1970's. Many years later I asked Deke Leonard what it was like playing with John. His face lit up and said that it was awesome. I have long been an admirer and so by it's very nature this review is somewhat biased.
This year fans will see the DVD version of an earlier VHS tape, Electric Gunslinger, now alas out of print, which will include clips of many of the bands that John played with and hopefully Raven will be part of that footage.
Originally released as a transfer to CD of some tapes by a German label (and it showed) this is a cleaned up, much improved expanded version which will be gratefully received by John's legions of devoted fans. The extensive notes of the story of Raven and their trials and tribulations so lucidly and cogently by Mike Somavilla set the scene before listening to the music itself.
I was tempted to award this album five stars at first but feel that the CD does not really do justice to the music contained therein. Given the sources the mere fact that we have the album this good at all is extremely commendable but I feel that the album does not fully reflect the performances and thus the four stars.
Given the origins of the band from the notes it should come as no surprise to find songs which reappeared under other guises later. Raven is described as John's version of a big band and the album is a testament to that idea. Throughout listeners will find John's trademark sound but within the context of playing in a band and allowing others to make their contribution. He does not dominate or overwhelm but his presence is always felt. On some of the songs John contributes more than on others bu the overall impression is one of a band playing and having fun.
The things that shine through this album are the way the band plays together. It's only rock'n'roll but they obviously like it. I think that had the recordings been better then the interplays between the various members would have been clearer but you cannot have everything. There is a tightness in the performances which shows the familiarity of the material and sense of sharing. It is clear too that the band members shared a closeness which is more than friendliness, a sort of spirituality which is very special.
I very much enjoyed this album, as a historical record, as pieces of John Cipollina playing, as a pice of the great Bay area musical legacy and just as listening to a rock'n'roll band. To me the great thing about John Cipollina is his guitar playing. But the other great thing is his willingness to play rock and roll. He was not concerned about his status as a star but clearly was a musician who liked the idiom and liked to perform and liked to do so with other kindred spirits. Sharing his wealth of talent is the mark of a special man, of a man with humility and a generous spirit and these attributes are clearly in evidence in these peformances. (By Junglies)

THE WHO - The Complete Amsterdam 1969 - Pre-FM SDB Remastered **FIXED**
This fixed version of my 2005 remaster was seeded on Dime some time
ago, but got banned due to my discovery that there was MD in the line age.
However, no Pre-fm version exist without minidisc in the line age.
And the Pre-FM version slays every Post-FM version out there.
The owner of the reels transferred them to MD before going to CDR,
and no other transfer digital has ever been.
This remaster has been regarded by many fans as the definitive version.
The original was downloaded at least 5000 times on different sites that
I'm aware off and this fixed version was completed only 800 times in the 10 hours
before it got banned, so I decided to reseed the fixed version here due to popular
demand, and the fact that the original offspeed remaster has now also
been bootlegged.
I first seeded this one first in 2005 on Dime.
But at the time, I neglected to correct the speed and the channel order.
Some people pointed this out to me, but it wasn't later -when I played this again-
that I really heard how off-speed (way too fast) my remaster was.
Apart from the speed and channel swapping, I also corrected
the first seconds of 'Go to the mirror" with a very short segment of
the recently unleashed "Windmills in Amsterdam" source which
comes from a re-broadcast from a couple months ago (thanks to
windmill & hntgzr).
You will not be able to hear the edit. At least I can't.
Other than that, this is identical to the remaster of 2005.
I updated the text below with lots of newly found information
and of course with the technical changes I made.
While researching, I stumbled upon the name of the man
who was ultimately responsible for this fantastic source.
To make a long story short, I contacted him and sent him
this fixed version, just as a gift. He LOVED it.
Sincerely,
Prof. Stoned

***About the recording:
This recording was made by a dutch radio / tv broadcast station
called the AVRO. The first hour of the concert was put directly on-air,
while the second hour was transmitted during the afternoon of the day after.
It was actually also partially filmed and broadcast on TV
in a reportage on the 8 o'clock News .
Unfortunately, no visual footage has ever made it to us traders.
All of the people who attended this concert have been raving
about it. Multiple witnesses remarked that when The Who appeared
on stage, Keith Moon fell off the stairs really hard,
nearly causing promotor Paul Acket to have a heart attack.
But only to open all registers two minutes later with the first song,
playing with the blood still on his head.
Another witness remarked that Princess (and nowadays
Queen of the Netherlands) Beatrix was there too, which seems kinda
surrealistic. Other witnesses were the Golden Earring and
Dave Dee, Dozy, Bicky, Mick and Tich.
Here are some pictures (made by Henk Hulstkamp):
http://www.postmaweb.nl/who/foto_1969.html
Back then, and today still, het concertgebouw was not a place
for rockbands but for opera's and other classic music.
Mixed directly to 2-tracks, this may been one of the reasons why
the mixing engineer had a hard time finding the right
balance. The mix changes oftenly, and sometimes the drums
or the guitar just disappear or get buried for a while.
It also must have been hard for the band to hear each other,
because of the extremely reverbrating acoustics.
Remember, this was 1969 and sound monitoring on stage was
still a thing for the future.
When comparing this one to other Who shows from this year,
this one may not be the best one.
Roger Daltrey has once said that he didn't think he sang very good
this night. And playing the Tommy album on stage was obviously
not a routine for the band yet.
But! There is more than enough to enjoy here.
It is the only complete soundboard recording from this year.
It is also the only one with complete line age and it has the best sound,
unlike the millions of post-FM sources (including the recent one which
was compressed to death by the radio station) circulating out there.
Beside that, all other who '69 board tapes are far from complete
and don't have most of Tommy.
Listening to the mix and looking at the pictures, it seeems like the
radio engineer was working with the following channels:
1) Bass Drum (although no mic can be seen on the pictures....)
2) Drum Overhead (Sennheiser 421)
3) Bass Guitar
4) Guitar
5) Vocal Roger
6) Vocal Pete
7) Vocal John
8) Room Ambiance (audience)
The last channel was faded up (& down) every time the moment seemed right.
Having it faded up in the mix all the time, probably affected the sound badly.

Somewhere around 2000, this Pre-FM source of this show was unearthed.
It proved to be a dramatical improvement on every source available before.
And it also made the very hard to find version of 'A quick one'
available for the first time in good audio quality.
R.T., a dutch Who diehard-fan who got to make a professional analog copy
from the master tapes in 1974, was at the heart of this.
He was asked by a dutch radio station to provide information and help
for a 10th anniversary Who special and he loosely suggested to the
presenter to use the annoucement of the Amsterdam recording,
which he knew was made by the same radio station.
Thus, he asked the radio engineer to make him a private copy
of the master reel, which the engineer did.
During the 70's, he made copies from his reels for a few 'close'
fellow collectors with the insistence that no further copies would be derived from these.
He made unique edits on every copy, so that he could recognise them
if they would eventually leak to the bootleggers.
After a while he found his confidence being betrayed when a few bootlegs
which contained his source appeared.
Understandably, this pissed him off. But he brought up the courage to
contact Pete Townshend to explain what happened and to apologise.
History repeated itself in the 90's, when R.T. made a digital copy
(from MD to CDr) of his reels for what he considered a trustworthy fellow trader.
Again, he cut out little fragments, this time only from the dialogue
between the songs.
This ended up to be the Amsterdam Journey bootleg CD on Hiwatt.
After discovering this, R.T. decided that this time he had nothing to lose
anymore and made a completely unedited version available
to anybody who was interested.
That source eventually became the standard rather than the
Hiwatt boot and is also the souce used for this remaster

***About the mastering:
I'm a great Who fanatic, especially of the 1965-1973 period.
The sonics of this recording have been bothering me each time I listened to it.
But I felt that the right mastering treatment could make a world of difference.
I've been mastering board tapes, studio/live albums and radio broadcasts for years.
I'm not making a full living out of it, but it is a part of my profession.
I have treated this recording with multiband compression and limiting plus some
very minor adjustments with a digital pultec eq.
Only three tools, but these are tools that can either make or break the sound.
Especially the former two are often overused in the world of modern mastering
by engineers of great fame (Jon Astley, for example...).
The newly discovered source still suffered from a sometimes
very shrieky high-end, and a serious lack of bass frequencies.
I adjusted the low-end to make the bass guitar sound like a bass guitar.
Then I worked especially on the sound of vocals and cymbals.
Most of the time the vocals are a bit too loud in the mix,
as they were probably not compressed or limited.
I attempted to bring them back in the mix as closely as possible,
without harming the sound whenever the vocals were not present.
I seperated the complete recording in four pieces and gave them
the treatment they each needed.
I did not use any noise reduction on this recording despite it being hissy.
This is another tool that should be used very carefully, if at all.
To quote a well known audiophile mastering engineer:
"Hiss is everywhere. It's part of our lives. Without hiss we would all go insane"
The recording has got pops, crackles, distortion & the ocassional technical
difficulties. 'Overture' is an obvious example of this.
There are many flaws in the orginal recording, and these were also heard in
the post-fm sources.
I did not attempt to remove or slighten any of these.
Most of you should know what was on the label of the orginal
Live at Leeds LP: "Crackling noises ok, do not correct".
(NB: This was actually a note to the cutting engineers at the time.)
I changed the speed of the recording with -0.49 semitones.
I tuned the first song exactly to a generated G tone (792 Hz).
And I swapped the channels so that Pete's guitar is on the right.
A comparison with "Windmills in Amsterdam", confirmed that this
runs in the correct speed now.
I did some minor editing. The first seconds of "go to the mirror" were
missing on the 'complete dialogue' and all earlier versions.
Because the band plays the same chords for a couple of times,
I was able to copy the missing bit from a few bars further
and disguise the problem considerably.
And now, on this new 2006 edition I have furtherly -and this time
definitively- repaired this flaw by using a 1 second segment
of the "Windmills in Amsterdam" post FM source.
The 'complete dialogue' version has a bonus feature: 5 tracks & a KM interview
from an unspecified source of a Dutch TV broadcast from 1973.
In my opinion, the soundquality of those tracks is dreadful and only
one track is not already included in the Amsterdam part.
To me, it does not add anything to the mindblowing listening experience
that the Amsterdam concert is.
Therefore, I have scrapped the 1973 part on this remaster.
Still there ? :-)
Hope you enjoy this classic show in new improved soundquality.
BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS – Marley: The Original Soundtrack
Bob Marley & The Wailers – Marley: The Original Soundtrack (2012)
Some 30-plus years after his death and the popularity, the influence, and – more than anything – the iconoclastic status of reggae legend Bob Marley were still growing, so much so that his face on a t-shirt had become ubiquitous on college campuses, surpassing Che Guevara on posters and canvas banners as well.
Marley, the documentary film and its accompanying soundtrack, aim to keep the man not only an icon, but a historical figure too by filling in his backstory with interviews, historical news footage, and that sweet, sweet reggae music that brought the man such a huge following. Here, it’s just the music, and most of it’s widely available previously with only a handful of rare live cuts, but it rivals the popular Bob Marley starter Legend…
… when it comes to overall picture, featuring some pre-1972, pre-Island Records music that recasts this revolutionary figure as a smooth, R&B-influenced singer early on. That said, most of Marley’s later love songs are skipped in favor of his political material, and the set is heavy with Island Records cuts as it is that era’s material most are familiar with, although quintessential songs like “Is This Love” and “Buffalo Soldier” are missing, so Legend still wins when it comes to “the hits.” Think of this as an enriching companion to the film or an alternative primer that favors Marley’s rebel music. Either way, it delivers.
