FRANK ZAPPA - Serious Music
Serious Music (LP)
* "A Zappa Affair" orchestral concert, Zellerbach Auditorium, UC Berkeley, 16-Jun-1984
* The World's Greatest Sinner film excerpt
* Basement 1978
* Studio 1972
Length: ~52 min
Sound quality: FM radio A / Soundboard? (claims "digitally remastered")
Label: ICA Masterworks Oct 31 (original vinyl)
Musicians: various
1. The World's Greatest Sinner (11:54)
2. Revenge of the Knick-Knack People (6:20) [extended version]
3 RDNZL (4:08) [longer edit of the Lost Episodes version]
4. Inca Roads (3:56) [slightly longer edit of the Lost Episodes version]
5. Sinister Footwear (26:54)
Track 1 is an excerpt from the film THE WORLD'S GREATEST SINNER that Zappa scored in 1961 - the film music was played by the Pomona Valley Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fred E Graff, recorded at Chaffey College, and the parts of Satan (the narrator) and Clarence "God" Hilliard were played by Paul Frees and Timothy A. Carey, respectively.
Track 2 is a longer version of the ballet for piano, percussion and tape effects that appears as a bonus track on Läther.
Tracks 3-4 are the versions on The Lost Episodes (although the cover boasts "WAZOO"), but these edits are a bit longer: "RDNZL" is about 04:11 (22 seconds longer than on The Lost Episodes), and the fade-out in "Inca Roads" is a couple of seconds longer, too. By the way, the Japanese CD re-issue calls this an "official unreleased album", which it is not. The original vinyl was released in 1984.
Track 5, the ballet "Sinister Footwear", was recorded at the "A Zappa Affair" concert at the Zellerbach Auditorium at UC Berkeley. It was played by the Berkely Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kent Nagano. This is the only time "Sinister Footwear" has been performed in its entirety, and Zappa was most unhappy with the results. The orchestra plays it very, very slowly. The ballet consisted of giant puppets with dancers inside them. It is in three movements and 21 parts (averaging 7 parts per movement). The parts are named as follows:
1: Jake Who Designs It
2: Somewhere in New Jersey Where They Make Them
3: Illegal Aliens on a Lunch Break
4: At the Catering Truck
5: Jake Eats a Molded Jello Salad
6: Jake's Secretary
7: Illegal Aliens Work Slower in the Afternoon
8: Jake's Secretary Reads Her Magazine
9: Illegal Aliens Want to Go Home
10: Jake's Secretary Eats Cottage Cheese
11: Ugly Shoes on the Assembly Line
12: What You Think You Look Like When You're Wearing Them
13: Sometimes They Make You Walk Funny
14: Other People Pretend Not to Notice
15: Sometimes You Have to Take Them Off for a Minute
16: Then You Put Them Back On Because You Think They Look So Good on You
17: Children Can Also Have Ugly Shoes
18: The Foot Doctor Says You Might Need an Operation
19: But You're Going to Wear Them Anyway
20: Everybody Has a Pair Somewhere
21: A Place You Can Go When You've Got Them On
(There was for a while thought to be an unknown bootleg called "Orchestral Madness" with some of this material, but it has now been shown that it was just a case of Serious Music having a sticker on the cover saying "Orchestral Madness". There is a Son of Serious Music, though.) http://fp.io/ma7m5e4f/
FRANK ZAPPA - Zappa Picks - By Larry LaLonde Of Primus
Zappa Picks - By Larry LaLonde Of Primus
2002
What do Jon Fishman of Phish and Larry Lalonde of Primus have in common? Well, first, they were nice enough to give of their time and secondly they both feel an inherent bond with Frank Zappa and his music. Rykodisc is just beginning of what will be a series of compilation releases covering the career of the rock legend. These two CDs are the inaugural releases to kick off the program that will offer more of the Zappa catalog through the eyes of other musicians.
Zappa was an original; I think that it is safe to say that there was nobody like him nor will there ever be. His music was just as unique. Bizarre, funny, complex...those are some of the words that come to mind when describing the way he presented his music live and in the studio. He was undoubtedly one of the world's premier guitar players. He also was an outspoken activist, a father, and a tremendously respected man in and out of music circles. His absence has left a huge void in the music world. He was that special. We still have his music to remember him by and these CDs are quite a devotion to his craftiness.
There is a lot of music to take in on these two discs. Fishman's picks has 17 tracks and Lalonde's 19. The liner notes are terrific, as each artist relates his own personal experiences growing up listening to Zappa. I am completely taken aback as to what I can say about all of this music. It's all great stuff! Most of it is very weird, and that's what makes it so interesting to listen to. Keeping in mind that I have a warped sense of humor ... the sexist and politically satirical nature of some of the songs I thought were funny as hell. I am sure some of the material may offend some folks; if so, just listen to the music, its some of the most amazing music ever made, and most have found it nearly impossible to duplicate.
My favs were "Doreen," "Dog Breath," "I'm The Slime," "five-five-FIVE," and the unforgettable "Camarillo Brillo." Simply put, every song has its own personality and sound. You have to immerse yourself in Zappa's music to understand it, and those that do can find the appreciation for everything he did. Some of his recordings may have sounded out there, and for the most part, they were, but they were all Frank, 100%. Whoever said he did not have any commercial potential? (Reference to a book called No Commercial Potential, Zappa's story). There is more than enough information in each song to stick in your craw, chew, and mull over. Zappa made thinking man's music, and he was the ultimate musician's musician.
These CDs are a wonderful primer to his music. If you are a longtime fan or even if you have not experienced the pleasures and oddities of Zappa's world, it is a great way to get some of his best material on one CD. Any way you look at it, you should try the music, who knows? You may just come back for some more. Keep it real and keep it greasy, the main thing is to get these CDs before you leave this earthly domain.

MACY GRAY / COVERED
Macy Gray – Covered (2012)
Covered isn’t just a collection of familiar songs given the Macy Gray treatment — it’s a frequently funny journey through what makes Macy Gray Macy Gray, with celebrity guests visiting to offer advice (like JB Smoove advising she wield a sword on-stage, or Nicole Scherzinger saying she should sing more Alanis Morissette songs). Fortunately, all of it’s enlivened by Gray’s ability to (mostly) deliver strong performances that don’t sound like they’ve been labored over. With her keyboard-led live band in tow, Gray mashes Eurythmics’ “Here Comes the Rain Again” with Radiohead’s “Creep,” Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” with Nina Simone’s “Buck.”
Her choice and range of material to cover are astonishing, always yielding songs that are perfect for her (and her audience), like “Smoke Two…
…Joints,” done earlier by Sublime as well as the Toyes.
1. Here Comes the Rain Again (Eurythmics 1983) [03:44]

ATLANTIS - ATLANTIS LIVE AT FABRIK 1975
ATLANTIS - Live At Fabrik (1975)
Legendary INGE RUMPF - live!
Atlantis was not only the name of the legendary island, the famous Greek author Plato mentioned, but also the name of a band formed by ex-Frumpy musicians Inga Rumpf, Jean-Jacques Kravetz and Karl-Heinz Schott, in late Summer, 1972. The initial line-up included guitarist Frank Dietz and ex-Emergency drummer Curt Cress (later with Triumvirat, Passport). The band played a few live gigs in Germany before they recorded their debut in London's Island Studios. The US magazine, Cash Box, compared Atlantis with the Doobie Brothers and praised Inga Rumpf's blues-tinged voice.
Recorded live at "Fabrik", Hamburg, Germany 1973/1975.
