CHIC COREA – The Continents: Concerto for Jazz Quintet & Chamber Orchestra

Chick Corea – The Continents: Concerto for Jazz Quintet & Chamber Orchestra [2CD] (2012)

The Continents Concerto for Jazz Quintet and Chamber Orchestra features pianist Chick Corea performing with his combo and orchestra. The first disc features Corea’s six-part composition conceptualized around Africa, the Americas, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, and Europe. While Corea’s small group features such players as trombonist Steve Davis, saxophonist Tim Garland, bassist Hans Glawischnig, and drummer Marcus Gilmore, Corea is also backed by a handpicked orchestra conducted by Steve Mercurio and including members of the Harlem String Quartet and Imani Winds. This is truly a forward-thinking ensemble that can deftly fuse intricately arranged orchestral passages with more improvisatory jazz sections. The second disc features an extende solo piano series as well as several standards featuring Corea and his small group.

Southpaw guitarist Otis Rush made his debut in 1956 with a cover of Willie Dixon’s "I Can’t Quit You Baby", charting his first Top Ten R&B hit. Over the course of his 50-year career, Rush has established himself as one of the premiere bluesmen on the Chicago circuit.

Often credited with being one of the architects of the West side guitar style, Rush’s esteemed status as a prime Chicago innovator is eternally assured by his trademark sound. Blues fans have said that his combination of ringing, vibrato-enhanced guitar work with an intense vocal delivery is powerful enough to force the hair on the backs of their necks upwards in silent salute.

Otis Rush Live At Montreux 1986 features the Chicago blues legend at his spine-tingling best. For his first appearance at the Montreux Festival, Rush is joined on stage by fellow blues stars Eric Clapton and Luther Allison for a truly special show. The CD features nearly an hour-and-a-half of performances of Rush classics, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Double Trouble" and many more.

WIDESPREAD PANIC / PORCH SONGS VOL # 9 - Two Rivers Auditorium, Grand Junction, CO - 06/10/1996

6/10/96 Two Rivers Auditorium, Grand Junction, CO

Another visit to 1996 brings us the 9th volume of Porch Songs….and another amazing performance in the process.

Widespread Panic made Colorado their second home a long time ago.  They’ve probably played every town and venue in the state…..from the true hole in the walls to the likes of Red Rocks and Denver’s Pepsi Center.  No matter the season of the year or how remote the venue, the boys always came ready to play.  On a Monday night in June of 1996, Grand Junction was the place….and a seamless performance was in the making.
Pretty much Old School defined, this show is all about the connective tissue between the tunes and the magic of improvisation.  Some of the segues turn on a dime while some evolve from nowhere.  Right out of the gate we get a taste of what’s in store with the Glory Fishwater opener…..the jam out of Glory charges into Fishwater and it’s game on.  With a smooth rhythmic buildup from L.a. into Weight of the World, the band is locked in and scorching the set.  From the start of The Last Straw, the band skillfully takes us on a non-stop ride….with Dirty Business effortlessly sandwiched into Stop Go and then closing the set with Pigeons right on into Bowlegged Woman.
The second set was no different in how it set up and played out.  Opening with Tall Boy, the segue afterward finds JoJo playing out a backwards Hatfield intro before the rest of the band joins him for the real deal.  From there, Radio Child and Pilgrims bring us to a turn on a dime beginning to Blight and then a rager through and through with B of D, Airplane and then a crazy Pusherman jam into the Drums.  Of course, Pusherman came back around before Conrad closed this set.  The Postcard encore said it all…”I don’t ever want to leave!”….and they didn’t as they stuck around for a great rendition of Stag-O-Lee.

This show just brings it all together….musicianship, intent, patience and that unending love between the stage and those lucky enough to have found themselves in Grand Junction on that Monday night…..and once again, the boys proved a point… don’t miss a Colorado show…no matter what day of the week it might be!!!

THE STEEL WHEELS – Lay Down, Lay Low

The Steel Wheels – Lay Down, Lay Low (2012)
With a sound sitting comfortably between Old Crow Medicine Show and newer forms of bluegrass, The Steel Wheels of Harrisonburg, VA provide a unique listening experience. Comprised of four guys with backgrounds ranging from Mennonite Gospel quartets to concert bands and orchestras, the members of this group (Trent Wagler, Jay Lapp, Eric Brubaker, and Brian Dickel) are joined by Oliver Craven to create a distinctive sound. On this, their fourth album as a group, The Steel Wheels have included a wide array of material. While all of their songs are rooted in traditional music of some sort, they seem to draw from every aspect of American music. Fast-paced bluegrassy instrumentals like Lapp’s tune Fridley’s Gap, lay alongside powerful-sounding harmonies and Gospel influences on…
Rain in the Valley. Hints of blues and jazz show up throughout the album, making several songs feel soulful and smooth. Spider Wings is extremely interesting, with a percussive rhythm that at times sounds almost like a rap beat. Other songs are more subdued, featuring clawhammer banjo, peaceful melodies and a bowed bass line. Despite the wide array of approaches, Lay Down Lay Low is still a cohesive album; the Wheels make jazzy beats fit in right beside mandolin-led instrumentals.

CLARENCE CLEMONS - "HERO"

     CLARENCE CLEMONS
''HERO''

Narada Michael Walden produces most of this album by Mokshagun Clarence Clemons, known to the world as the "Big Man." His unmistakable saxophone that lifted many a Bruce Springsteen tune sounds like it was lifted right out of a Phil Spector session on Hero. "You're a Friend of Mine" by Jeffrey Cohen and Narada has Jackson Browne dueting on the lead vocal with Clemens and his then-girlfriend, Daryl Hannah, on backing vocals. The same songwriting duo comes up with "Temptation," a hooky, smart, mid-'80s thick-pop sound with Booker T. Jones again on keyboards. For "It's Alright With Me Girl" it's the very hip Jonzun Crew backing up Clemons: Michael Jonzun, Gordon Worthy, guitarist Tony "Rocks" Cowan, Maurice Starr on bass, and Princess Loria on vocals, with stunning dynamic switches from Narada Michael Walden to Michael Jonzun in a flash. Clemons and Jonzun put "It's Alright With Me Girl" together, and it's a shame there aren't four or five more of these collaborations. One oddity on the album is the closing to side one, the Arthur Baker-produced remake of the Walker Brothers' hit "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore," with Stu Kimball from Face to Face and Phil Spector singer Darlene Love. The title track, which kicks off side two, is a tremendous song about being a lover and a friend. "Crossin' the Line" works, as does "Kissin' on You," where Clemons' nickname, the Big Man, is one of the hooks. The leadoff track with Jackson Browne went Top 20 in 1985, four years before his first go-round with the E-Street Band was concluding. It's great to see a musician step from the shadows of a legend and make a mark on his own, and Clarence Clemons does that remarkably well here. This is a record where dropping names means something, because the names are allowed to do what is expected of them. It's a beautiful work that will appeal to those who never found the Boss all that exciting. Of course, it might appeal to Springsteen fans as well.

THE NEW MASTERSOUNDS – Breaks from the Border (2011)

The New Mastersounds – Breaks from the Border (2011)

Rather than take a well-deserved break after a U.S. festival tour, Leeds U.K. funk quartet the New Mastersounds flew to Tomillo, Texas’ Sonic Ranch, a residential neighborhood studio located near the border between the States and Mexico. Deciding they wanted to append their near-constant instrumental output with vocals — that have primarily occurred on stages rather than in the studio — they flew in Rhianna “Freckles” Kenny to collaborate in the writing, arranging, and recording process. Cut in just over a week, Breaks from the Border reflects the bubbling, energetically infectious sounds of the New Mastersounds at their best, while adding depth and dimension to some beautifully breezy, elastic, harmonically savvy vocals that never manage…
… to get in the way of the quartet’s knotty, rave-up funky grooves. All four members harmonize on opener “Take What You Need,” which merely highlights their backbeat-driven Meters-influenced funk with an into-the-red bassline groove led by Pete Shand. They pick up the tempo with “Run the Gauntlet,” featuring a smoking B-3 solo by Joe Tatton. The knotty breaks by kit man Simon Allen fuel the shimmering group vocals on “On the Border,” while the finger-popping dialogue between the bassline and Eddie Roberts’ jazz guitar wrangling on “Freckles” accounts for one of the finest moments on the disc. The burning Afro-funk at the heart of “Walk in These Shoes” reveals the quartet at full rhythm burn, even with the four-part harmonies adding a breezy, humid element to the mix. Roberts’ guitar break is one of the best on any New Mastersounds studio effort. “Josus” walks on the jazz side of funk and “Can You Get It?” sounds like an update of the Meters’ bubble and broil. Kenny takes her own lead vocal break on the album-closing jazzer “Up in the Air,” with spacy psychedelic soul grooves from the New Mastersounds. On paper, it would have seemed that Breaks from the Border might have fallen short; as it stands, however, this set adds another level of from-the-basement groove to the quartet’s already formidable attack.
