THE WHO - THE SINGLES

The Who – The Singles (1984, SHM-SACD 2011)
Filed Under: remastered, rock by driX — Leave a commentDecember 18, 2011
The Singles [SACD] contains 26 tracks. The first 11 are all mono while tracks from 12 to 26 are all stereo. As to be expected most of the stereo tracks sound better than the earlier mono…..but there are some surprises and exceptions to be found. “My Generation” and “I Cant explain” sound better here than the original sacd released 7 years ago. This is because a real tape source was used rather than a 24/96 pcm transfer from tape. One imagines that this collection was aimed at the total neophyte listener – taken in any other context, this is an odd collection of single sides by one of the premiere singles bands of the 1960s and early ’70s. Does it start at the beginning, with either “I’m the Face” or “I Can’t Explain”? No. Does it encompass many of the freestanding singles…
mp3 320 kbps | 228 MB | FSo | FSe | Ul | ES | DF
…issued by this band through 1972? No. Does it even offer any of the less well-known single sides from that period? No — apart from the three-and-a-half-minute single edit of “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” which was hardly a sterling example of the format or the genre. Instead, listeners get all of the most familiar hits, albeit in their original mono mixes where relevant: “Substitute,” “I’m a Boy,” “Pictures of Lily,” “I Can See for Miles,” “Pinball Wizard,” “Squeeze Box,” etc. The best of it overlaps with Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, among other collections, so veteran collectors and listeners will find nothing unique here.

THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS - Authorized Bootleg: Fillmore East, NY, NY Late Show 11/07/70

Flying Burrito Brothers - Authorized Bootleg: Fillmore East, NY, NY Late Show 11/07/70 [2011]

The Fillmore East show captured on this Authorized Bootleg occurred on November 7, 1970, not long after Gram Parsons and Chris Ethridge left the Flying Burrito Brothers and were replaced by Rick Roberts and Bernie Leadon. Head Burrito Brother Chris Hillman rounded out this lineup with Byrds drummer Michael Clarke and legendary steel guitarist Sneaky Pete Kleinow, all of which means that while this lineup lacked the star power of Parsons, it nevertheless packs considerable musical punch, the band sounding assured, in no way suggesting it's a group whose lineup is in flux.

Chris Hillman: vocals, bass, mandolin;
Bernie Leadon: vocals, guitar, banjo;
Rick Roberts: vocals, guitar;
"Sneaky" Pete Kleinow: pedal steel guitar, lead vocal (8)
Michael Clarke: drums.

TIMOTHY LEARY - You Can Be Anyone This Time Around [1970]

Timothy Leary - You Can Be Anyone This Time Around [1970]

Timothy Francis Leary (October 22, 1920 – May 31, 1996) was an influential American psychologist and writer known in later life for advocating research into psychedelic drugs. A hugely controversial figure during the 1960s and 1970s, he encouraged the use of the drug LSD for its therapeutic, emotional and spiritual benefits, and coined the saying "Turn on, tune in, drop out", both of which proved to be hugely influential on the 1960s counterculture. Largely due to his influence in this field, he was attacked by conservative figures in the United States, and described as "the most dangerous man in America" by President Richard Nixon.

His album You Can Be Anyone This Time Around was one of the first cut'n'splice albums of the rock era. Hendrix, Stephen Stills, John Sebastian and drummer Buddy Miles appear on the 14 minute track Live And Let Live (on which Leary is credited with the "rap") here.

FRANK ZAPPA - Feeding The Monkies At Ma Maison

Frank Zappa was a singular musical figure during a performing and recording career that lasted from the 1960s to the ’90s. His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on jazz and complicated, modern serious music, sometimes inducing orchestras to play along.
Feeding the Monkies at Ma Maison is a compilation album by Frank Zappa, released posthumously in 2011. Executed by Frank Zappa on his Synclavier at UMRK, it was originally intended as a vinyl release. It appears to be the missing link between Jazz from Hell (1986) and Civilization, Phaze III (1994) [Official Release #90].

UK: Lost UK Tape. The Spectrum, Philadelphia, USA [1979]

Singer/bassist John Wetton and drummer Bill Bruford had worked together in King Crimson from 1972-4, when guitarist Robert Fripp disbanded the group. Wetton and Bruford continued to work together on ideas. In September 1976, they worked on forming a band with keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who had previously worked with Bruford in Yes. The project was stopped by Wakeman's label. According to Bruford, "A&M Records were unwilling to let their 'star,' Wakeman, walk off with a used, slightly soiled King Crimson rhythm section, and the idea failed." Bruford and Wetton next asked guitarist Robert Fripp to reform King Crimson When Fripp declined, Bruford and Wetton decided that each would bring in a musician of his choice to form a new band. Wetton brought in keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson, whom Wetton knew from his work with Roxy Music in 1976 – "stealing" him from Frank Zappa. Bruford recruited guitarist Allan Holdsworth (formerly of Soft Machine and Gong) who had played guitar on Bruford's 1977 debut solo album, Feels Good to Me.

U.K. released their self-titled debut album in 1978 and followed it with a supporting tour. Following two lengthy American tours (June-October 1978), first Holdsworth and then Bruford departed U.K. over musical differences, going on to form the jazz rock fusion group Bruford.
