JOHN HIATT - The Open Road (2010)
John Hiatt's music has frequently had issues of family at or near the core. That's true of his latest album, but the perspective reaches beyond primary relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, to take on bigger questions of heritage and legacy. That's a big chunk to bite off, but as one of rock's most astute singer-songwriters of the last 40 years, Hiatt brings considerable insight and his characteristic wry humor to the task. At 57, Hiatt doesn't have much time for boy-meets/loses-girl scenarios. He's sharing the explorations of a man recognizing his weaknesses ("Like a Freight Train") and acknowledging his debt to those who've come before ("Homeland") on the way to discovering his core values ("Go Down Swingin' "). Not that he bypasses the four-letter word that is "love." In "What Kind of Man," as he's been throughout his estimable career, he's far more interested in plumbing his own nefarious attitudes than finding someone else on whom to affix blame for his troubles: "You see the man who loves you/You see the man you love/But I have hidden claws/Inside these gloves." This bluesy, heartland-soaked musical excursion features meaty support from guitarist Doug Lancio, bassist Patrick O' Hearn and drummer Kenneth Blevins, wittily informed nods to such influences as Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones and Willie Dixon and plenty of the rock soulfulness that's integral to the sound he's been honing for decades. - latimesblogs.latimes.com

Frank Zappa show from 1973!
Or should I say:On the peak of his career?
I mean,he had made the "Freak Out" album in 1966 and he had made "Chunga´s Revenge(1970)" and he had made the "Waka Jawaka"album in 1972 already.
And 1973 now is the year of "Cosmic Debris","Fifty Fifty" or "Montana".Frank Zappa is rocking the world...
You can hear the fun they had when they played these shows in June of 1973!They sound like they would play "Fifty Fifty","Montana" or "Cosmic Debris"... like they played them for the first time...and never again!
If you like Frank Zappa shows (there is the June,25th,1973 show on the Wagon down below, too),
and if you still don`t have them,I can only recommend these shows! And I promise: You will love this show, too!
Ah,I forgot to tell you something bad...There are some very few unfortunate cuts...

An 11/23/85 Godard (side A) / Trey's 4 Track Project (side B) cassette tape used to circulate pretty well, the quality degrading with every analog generation. I hope this is an upgrade of what you have heard and, if it is not, I apologize (and you can email me at cdirksen@earthlink.net to complain). I have not altered this recording with tools -- it is simply a reproduction via HHB onto disc of the cassette tape that I received in the 1990s.
I was generously given this music on a 90 min Maxell XL2S tape by a friend of Trey's. He (among many others) had received the tape from Trey as a Christmas present a few days before Christmas in 1985.
Mike has said that during this 11/23/85 show in the Godard cafeteria, he had a transcendent, peak musical experience. Listen to him carefully, ideally with no distractions. I realize, though, that it is difficult to hear him on this recording. Also listen for "Norwegian Wood" and "The Other One" during the "Whipping Post Jam," which doesn't sound much like Whipping Post, but which presumably is a Jam that arose from Whipping Post's composed opening section (unfortunately, this intro section doesn't circulate). But it is Trey who called this a "Whipping Post Jam" and so I'm reluctant to change the title to "Jam." I realize the recording quality is poor, but I swear to you -- IN THE NAME OF THE ALMIGHTY ICCULUS -- that this is low gen. (Again, if it does not upgrade you, I apologize, but do me a favor and email me a .wav of the DEG to compare it with what I have.)
Show Notes for 11/23/85 from the current (8/20/09) version of The Phish Companion setlists file: This list for Set III is likely incomplete, as the only recording that circulates fades in and out at points. The “Whipping Post Jam” fades in after Mike’s Song on the recording that circulates. This “Jam” contained jams reminiscent of The Grateful Dead’s The Other One and Dark Star. It also featured Norwegian Wood teases from Mike, and a jam reminiscent of the early intro to Harry Hood. Antelope fades in after the “Whipping Post Jam” fades out. The complete lists for Sets I and II are not known, although Mike has referenced the first set Wild Thing in interviews and in The Phish Book.

Note: I recently was rummaging through some of my old dat tapes, and came across a tape
that had the Space Antelope recording, which has circulated decently, as well as "this"
recorded on it. I recall recently downloading a torrent that was labeled as an
"Early and Rare 1983 demo", and which started off with a Jam from 12.25.83, followed by
Slave, Antelope, and Hydrogen. Initially, I figured that whatever was on "this" dat that I
had labeled as "Bivoauc Jaun", and was recieved in a trade a bunch of years ago during
my hey day of recording and trading Phish shows on dat, was probably the same as the
bit torrent I downloaded. However, after giving it a listen, I realized that it wasn't
the exact 'same', but was 'similar', as it had the same Slave, Antelope, and Hydrogen that
were a part of that 'demo'. Additionally, though, it had a bunch of other rare material,
including early, partial renditions of The Divided Sky and Letter to Jimmy Page,
as well as a few other 'songs' or 'jams' that I could not identify. Now, considering I
recieved this in a trade from a phellow trader, there are certainly others out there that
must have copies of this. Needless to say, though, I have never seen this seeded in its
entirety. I suppose people may have refrained from circulating it under the assumption
that it wasn't worth it to do so, or that people may not want to hear it, as some of the
jams/songs are a bit obscure. However, as a phan who appreciates listening to these early
recordings and hearing where the band we all have grown to know and love came from, I am
of the opinion that there has to be some peeps out there that would also appreciate
hearing this. I mean, even if its just to give a listen to once, I think it is worth it to
just hear how wierd and funny it gets towards the end. So, in an effort to get this
circulating, I figured I would transfer and seed it in as complete a form that I believe
exists for all you who are phans of early and rare material. What I have included in this
text document I have done so to the best of my abilities and knowledge with information
included on my dat, as well as info obtain from "The Phish Companion" 'Discography Section'.
However, there are still a couple jams/songs that could not be identified due to a lack of
information, and for them I have filled in the blank as best as possible.
