THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS - Close Up the Honky Tonks [1974]

The Flying Burrito Brothers - Close Up the Honky Tonks [1974]

Close Up the Honky Tonks is a compilation double-LP by country rock artist The Flying Burrito Brothers, which was released in 1974. By this time, the Flying Burrito Brothers no longer existed, having been dissolved by Rick Roberts in 1973.

This compilation was released after Gram Parsons' death in 1973, presumably to capitalize on posthumous interest in Parsons' music, though the compilation does include cuts from the Chris Hillman-led post-Parsons era as well (on Side Four). This compilation still holds relevance into modern times as some of these songs have yet to be released anywhere else.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector [1963]

VA - A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector [1963]

A Christmas Gift for You from Philles Records (later re-released as A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector) is an album of Christmas songs, produced by Phil Spector, and originally released as Philles 4005 in 1963. Spector treated a series of mostly secular Christmas standards to his trademark "Wall of Sound" treatment, and the selections feature the vocal performances of Spector's regular artists during this period. It is one of only twelve long-playing records released on the Philles label, peaking at number 13 on Billboard magazine's special, year-end, weekly Christmas Albums sales chart in December 1963. The album was reissued by Apple Records in 1972, with different cover art and retitled Phil Spector's Christmas Album; this version went to number 6 on Billboard's special Christmas Albums sales chart in December of that year.

However, the album was a relative failure at the time and was released on 22 November 1963, the same day as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Original pressings are now scarce and collectable, now selling for $400–$500 in excellent condition.

THE WHO - RARITIES 1966-1972 [320, 1994]

The Who - Rarities 1966-1972 [320, 1994]

The Who's Rarities 1966-1972 is a double-album, single-disc British compilation of non-album singles, B-sides, covers, and obscure material. It came out just prior to the box set Thirty Years of Maximum R&B and the re-release of all the Who's albums, which have included some of the tracks on this release as bonuses. Although there is some overlap, Rarities contains many songs and original versions that are still unaccounted for. Interestingly, this is the only Who release not dominated by Pete Townshend compositions; more than half of the selections are either penned by other Who members or outside writers. This is the only official Who release that contains their covers of the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time" and "Under My Thumb" (released in the '60s as a protest against the unfair drug bust and short-lived jailing of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards), plus top-notch early-'70s studio material: "Don't Know Myself," Entwistle's "Heaven and Hell," and "Water." Some of the more interesting and uncommon material is an off the wall Keith Moon composition ("Waspman"), a strong Roger Daltrey original ("Here for More"), and an aggressive live take of "Baby Don't You Do It." Also included are the more well-known and popular Who standards "Join Together," "Relay," and "Let's See Action." Although Rarities 1966-1972 was intended for completists, it certainly holds up as an attractive exhibit of overlooked Who tracks from over the years.

THE ELECTRIC PRUNES - The Electric Prunes [1967]

The Electric Prunes - The Electric Prunes [1967]

The Electric Prunes are an American rock band who first achieved international attention as an experimental psychedelic group in the late 1960s. Their song "Kyrie Eleison" was featured on the soundtrack of Easy Rider. After a period in which they had little control over their music, they disappeared for thirty years, reformed in 1999, then resumed as a recording and touring band in 2001.

This is their 1967 debut album The first track, "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)", was a hit and became the band's signature tune. It became the lead track on the compilation Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968. The album also contains another notable psychedelic rock composition, "Get Me to the World on Time".

THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS - Burrito Deluxe [1970]

The Flying Burrito Brothers - Burrito Deluxe [1970]

Burrito Deluxe is the second album by the country rock group The Flying Burrito Brothers, released in 1970. In between The Gilded Palace of Sin and Burrito Deluxe, the band underwent some personnel changes. Bassist Chris Ethridge left the band out of frustration at the band's lack of success. In his place, Chris Hillman moved over to bass, and Bernie Leadon was hired to play guitar. Also, ex-Byrd Michael Clarke was hired as the band's full-time drummer.

Gram Parsons: vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards
Chris Hillman: vocals, bass, mandolin
Sneaky Pete Kleinow: pedal steel guitar
Bernie Leadon: vocals, guitar, dobro
Michael Clarke: drums

"Lazy Days" (Gram Parsons) - 3:03
"Image of Me" (Harlan Howard, Wayne Kemp) - 3:21
"High Fashion Queen" (Chris Hillman, Parsons) - 2:09
"If You Gotta Go, Go Now" (Bob Dylan) - 1:52
"Man in the Fog" (Bernie Leadon, Parsons) - 2:32
"Farther Along" (J.R.Baxter, W.B.Stevens) - 4:02

"Wild Horses" (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards) - 6:26
Bonus:

Sing Me Back Home
I Shall Be Released
This version of "Wild Horses" was released a year before The Rolling Stones released their version on 1971's Sticky Fingers, a reflection of the close friendship that Gram Parsons developed with Keith Richards since their meeting in 1968.

MOTT THE HOOPLE - MOTT THE HOOPLE / WILDLIFE

Mott The Hoople - Mott The Hoople / Wildlife (2 on 1)
After listening to some tracks on the disc discovered the label has completely F*CKED up the tracks and order. I am trying to manually re-label each track. No wonder this is long "Out Of Print" ! It's all here, so I will attempt to get it correct. I am including the origional back cover, even though the songs are incorrect. Great quality CD though ! KRILL

In 1969 the Midlands group: Silence, was in search of a new lead singer. Mick Ralphs, Pete Watts, Verden Allen and Dale Griffin had decided that Stan Tippins, the vocalist for Silence, was not projecting the image and voice that would propel Silence to the top of the charts.

Enter a bass guitarist/vocalist: Ian Hunter Patterson. The group wanted their new singer to play piano and sing a bunch. Ian, could barely play piano but had a rough Dylan voice and style, that the band was searching for. Eleven days after Ian met Silence, the group was in the studio working on this album. Changes were in order. First the name of the new singer was shortened to Ian Hunter, Dale Griffin, became: Buffin, Pete Watts was now: Overend Watts. The band name of Silence was re-christened: Mott The Hoople.

This startling debut record opens with a cover of The Kinks: "You Really Got Me." Not happy with the vocal track, the instrumental track was used as it was deemed more powerful. "At The Crossroads" By Doug Sahm & "Laugh At Me" by Sonny Bono spotlight Ian Hunter's vocal skills as a Bob Dylan type singer as backed by a Rolling Stone's style band. The Ian, penned: "Backsliding Fearlessly" is the first original song on the record, and it is a gem. "Backsliding" features a smoldering vocal and relentless piano that is all anchored by the pounding beat...the first glimse of what Mott The Hoople were to become.

Side two opens with the first classic MTH song: "Rock And Roll Queen." With the guitars of Mick Ralphs, and shared vocals between Ian and Mick, this is now a BAND and here is right where it all begins. "Rabbit Foot & Toby Time" is a short jam that leads in the album's centerpiece: "Half Moon Bay" a sweeping 11 minute ballad orchestrated by the mighty organ of Verden Allen. Ian's voice croaks and cracks, and is very perfect for this music...."Half Moon Bay" is a must-listen for any rock music fan, this is a great, great song. A short bit of studio madness puts a rap on the original album entitled: "Wrath And Wroll" by producer/looney Guy Stevens.

Mott The Hoople, would go through lot's of changes in the five years, that they existed as a band. But, this over-looked debut of a record, is a great begining for an even greater rock band

2. At The Crossroads

WILLIE NELSON – REMEMBER ME, VOL.1

WILLIE NELSON – REMEMBER ME, VOL.1 (2011)

December 1, 2011 by Zorn

In contrast to the deeper picks of last year’sCountry Music, this year’s model has Nelson working through some of the most famous tunes in country music’s chart history. Included are signature hits from Ernest Tubb (“Remember Me”), Tennessee Ernie Ford (“Sixteen Tons”), George Jones (“Why Baby Why”), Hank Snow (“I’m Movin’ On”), Porter Wagoner (“A Satisfied Mind”), and many others. Nelson teams with Nashville session players and producer James Stroud (the ‘J’ in the R&J record label) to record surprisingly straightforward and twangy covers of fourteen selections. The singularity of Nelson’s artistry allows these simple recitations to escape the shadows cast by the original hits; the instant identifiably of his voice is all that’s needed to make these songs his own. The result finds Nelson easily sharing the stage with both the songs and their famous originators, as if he were a cabaret singer taking a stroll through the great American songbook. It’s just that the songbook in question is mostly Nashville’s rather than Tin Pan Alley’s.

The song list selects heavily from the 1950s, but dips back into the mid-40s and forward to Vern Gosdin’s 1989 hit “That Just About Does It.” The one pick from outside the country charts is Rosemary Clooney’s 1954 pop chart-topper “This Old House.” Nelson and Stroud set the latter into the song list with a light swing arrangement that’s half way between Clooney’s original and Shakin’ Stevens’ 1981 rockabilly cover. The swinging continues with Tex Williams’ “Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)” and Bob Wills’ “Roly Poly,” providing balance to ballads that include a wonderfully idiosyncratic take on Ray Price’s “Release Me.” It’s a mark of Nelson’s stature and impact on country music that his unique styling provides inspiration, rather than a challenge, for the assembled pickers. This is a fine, easy-going collection of covers, as much about Nelson as it is about the hits. The sessions turned out enough finished works for a second volume, which is expected next year.
