THE B-52'S – With the Wild Crowd: Live in Athens
The B-52's – With the Wild Crowd: Live in Athens (2011)
The B-52s hit the stage in February of this year to commemorate the 34th anniversary of their first live show. As a homecoming of sorts, you know the show had to be in Athens, Georgia, and it had to be captured for posterity.
“Fun” is the word most frequently bandied around with the band, and the resulting live album (their first), With the Wild Crowd: Live in Athens, GA, encapsulates the good-natured revelry of the songs and performance.
While this show is slated for DVD release next year, this hardly seems necessary, given how visceral the music comes across on the compact disc alone.
A technological marvel on the scale of John Waters’ Smellovision in Polyester, the Sensurround in Earthquake, spray cheese, or pop rocks,…
…the band members have here found a way to push their renowned brand of high-octane camp through the speakers to replicate the infectious romp that only they can produce.
The opener, “Pump,” sets the stage for the aerobic workout ahead, with no power ballad in sight. The live album format brings the music to forefront, with the trademark vocal interplay of Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, and Cindy Wilson standing out.
What comes through as the set progresses is that for a band never known for their musicianship, these are some tight arrangements with intricate guitar and keyboard stylings. “Private Idaho,” “52 Girls,” and “Party Out of Bounds” especially highlight how complex making simple music can be.
Predictably, the songs that resonate most profoundly here are the singles, and they are rejuvenated live. “Roam,” “Love Shack,” the timeless “Planet Claire,” and of course the closer “Rock Lobster” all seem refreshed and are refreshing in their execution. The old briefly becomes new again.
Like the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffet, the B-52s embody a celebratory essence and vibe, and if you try, you can find fault in it, but it’s at the risk of being labelled a cantankerous and grumpy killjoy.
Therefore, the only weak complaint I can muster is that this album should have been out in time for the summer, so as to augment the warmth and rays!

NEIL YOUNG - Wet Show - Japan 1976
Neil Young - Wet Show - Japan 1976
Neil Young’s extensive tour with Crazy Horse in 1976 comes after the release of On The Beach in 1974 and two albums, Tonight’s The Night and Zuma, the following year. These two together represented an interest by Young in resurrecting his collaboration with Crazy Horse. The former was actually recorded several years before and the latter, releases six months afterwards in December 10th 1975 represents, in the view of many, the pinnacle of Young’s recorded output with the band. The first live appearances with the new Crazy Horse with Frank (Poncho) Sampedro replacing the deceased Dan Whitten consist of four shows in ten days in little clubs and bars in northern California, dubbed the “Rolling Zuma Revue.” An extensive world tour was booked, called “The Year Of The Horse,” beginning on March 3rd, 1976 in Nagoya.
This was Young’s first visit to Japan and he played seven shows in Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Tokyo. All of the shows have been taped and many pressed. The most recent releases include Another Osaka (Screamer), which contains half of the March 4th show, and GFK (Watch Tower) containing the Fukuoka tape. Wet Show, one of two recent Neil Young releases on the Tarantura label, contains a brand new complete audience recording. An older excellent audience recording exists and was released several years ago on You Are Just A Dream (F*!#in’ Up FUPCD-2001/2002), but is missing the second encore “Cortez The Killer.” Wet Show legitimately has the second encore and for the first time this show is complete.

LITTLE FEAT / 40 FEAT
With whippersnappers such as White Denim declaring their fondness for Little Feat there’s still a slim chance that this easy-rolling swamp-boogie outfit might appeal to a new generation. Certainly, if plaid shirt-wearing kids pick up any one of Sailin’ Shoes, Dixie Chicken and Feats Don’t Fail Me Now they’ll find a band who paired – gloriously at times – raw, bluesy, hot-diggity- damn trad’ rock with weird, voodoo-fuelled Southern Americana. After all, founding member Lowell George was a Mother of Invention with Zappa. But newcomers shouldn’t start with this three-disc live collection. Little Feat are – in the Grateful Dead tradition – a Jam Band and any latecomers in search of the swinging, tight-knit Louisiana rock found on Dixie Chicken… — BBC
mp3 VBR~248 kbps | 361 MB | FSo | ES | WU | UL | FSe
…and Feat Don’t Fail Me Now will find that (disc one aside) they go on a bit. But for fans already accustomed to the group’s neglect for time keeping, there’s much to savour.
This is a ‘best of’ of the live recordings released by the band’s own Hot Tomato Records to satisfy long-time fans who follow the band around, taping their every performance because, like, no two shows are ever the same, dude. And the vibe certainly varies across these discs thanks to Little Feat’s line-up changes.
The first disc features the original Lowell George-fronted outfit and is a brilliant, rough-and-ready ride through the band’s halcyon days (1971-78), morphing from rickety, sand-whipped blues into a swampy groovesome lope once Kenny Gradney and Paul Barrere replace The Magic Band’s Roy Estrada. A demo version of Fat Man in the Bathtub is brilliantly, wryly grubby; there’s a peculiarly ghostly Sailin’ Shoes; and Rocket in My Pocket and Dixie Chicken hit deep grooves. A strung-out Bill Payne chatting from behind his keys gives an idea of the fun they were having at the time.
Disc two and three, though, are for the diehards. They’re a very different beast here – better groomed and without George following his 1979 excess-fuelled death. Disc two (1988-2001) features a fine wiggy tribute to him in the shape of Rock and Roll Doctor, and Hate to Lose Your Lovin’ is sweaty-hot boogie. But things are smooth and rootsy, the groove and swing drying up along with their aging hips.
Original members Bill Payne and Richie Hayward (who died in 2009) are with the band throughout and there are still quality moments on disc three (2003-04), such as stoner classic Skin it Back and belting renditions of Let it Roll and Feats Don’t Fail Me Now. They’ve sure as hell still got the chops in these later years, but not the strange, good-time spirit that always leavened the trad’ leanings.

BOB DYLAN - PURE - AN INTIMATE LOOK AT BOB DYLAN
'Bob Dylan has in the past 10 or 15 years experienced an amazing comeback: It appears since the 1997 album TIME OUT OF MIND it simply, as he was the single greatest living artists of the rock era. He made a name for himself as an artist (Drawn Blank, Brazil Series), which in some of the best museums and galleries around the world issue (currently at the Gagosian Gallery in New York), - he wrote part one of his memoirs, turned with Masked And Anonymous a remarkable film, received a Pulitzer Prize, several Grammies, and his second honorary doctorate, surprised as a disc jockey with humor and encyclopedic knowledge of music (Bob's Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour) and reached with his albums suddenly chart positions and sales figures as in his best times in the 60s. And that he also nearly 70 years, is still even his longtime fans who think it all know, can surprise, he was two years ago, when he, from which one that now do not really expect was a Christmas album to say. In October / November Dylan completed as part of a large European tour with special guest Mark Knopfler eight large indoor concerts in our country - with a total of over 100,000 spectators, the German section of the European tour by far the largest audience. On the occasion of the Tour Sony Music Germany first got permission to bring out their own CD compilation.
PURE - AN INTIMATE LOOK AT BOB DYLAN gathered at a dibasic packaged and yet lovingly compiled 78-minute-Digipak-CD, a series of rarely heard songs, which one are to be found on any of the many best of the man, nevertheless are among the best of what Dylan has recorded in the last 50 years. Including a number of rarities like the never released on CD TROUBLE IN MIND (with Mark Knopfler on guitar) or the rare, wonderful solo version of SPANISH IS THE LOVING TONGUE. 17 songs, the show once again how important Dylan continues. A wonderful CD for beginners and fans! Or: the one Dylan album that everybody needs.
