SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION
Artwork Included
Japan 24-Bit Remaster
A remarkable debut album from an unfortunately short-lived band, this high-velocity record found Greg Lake applying his production talents to an amazingly talented power trio that featured the brother act of Gary Margetts (guitar) and Tristian Margetts (bass), along with powerhouse drummer Tony Brock. The startling result, with its intricate structures of lead guitar and surround-sound drumming, was packaged in a sleeve designed to look like an oversized comic book.
The debut was well-received, and sold well, but there was a long silence before the next album, Triad ... and after that, nothing. Oddly, little or nothing has been heard of the Margetts brothers since then, though drummer Brock went on to a successful career both as a sideman and as a member of Strider and the Babys.
This obscure outfit formed in 1971. Greg Lake spotted their potential and produced their debut album, which was a pretty typical progressive offering with lots of guitar and synthesizer. The follow-up Triad was more of the same. They are classic examples of albums nobody much wanted at the time becoming collectable - which is largely due to the label they appeared on.
After their demise Tristian Margetts resurfaced playing and recording with Greg Lake, but brother Gary quit the music business. Tony Brock was later in Strider and The Babys. In the eighties he was in Rod Stewart's backing band.

ATOMIC ROOSTER - IN SATAN'S NAME : THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION
Atomic Rooster - In Satan's Name: The Definitive Collection [2 CD, 1997]
Vincent Crane is a name familiar to people who likely have never heard his music, such was/is his rep as the 800-lb gorilla of Hammond players: Atomic Rooster, born following his departure from The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, was primarily his showcase through whose revolving doors many, many musicians came and went, some of interest to progressivistas (Carl Palmer, John du Cann), some of note to Britrock fans in general (Chris Farlowe, Pete French, Nick Graham), but none staying long enough to impose a clear direction for this band. Even Crane's rollicking piano and fat, full organ tone set the pace but don't dictate the fractions. This is borne out over the course of IN SATAN'S NAME, a 2cd comp of the first six lps put out by the British Snapper/Recall label (an interesting budget label that specializes in comps of some overlooked bands, PFM, the Ozrics, and post-Mott Mick Ronson being three others.) The first four albums are lightly sampled on Disc 1 (don't worry - "Death Walks Behind You" is there) while Disc 2 is Chris Farlowe-fronted albums 5 & 6 practically in their entirety. You might think this split shortchanges the prog-rock fan, but there's nothing very progressive about any of the incarnations, entertaining though they are: this Rooster doesn't so much cross the road as swerves crazily all over it. Throughout this comp they veer from evil Gothic hard rock a la an organ-heavy Black Sabbath, to more of an early Birth Control sound, finally to an unsteady mix of Capt Beyond & Blood Sweat & Tears. Now, I should stress there's nothing terrible on either disc; in fact, if you're partial to the 69-73 era, there's a lot to like in a minor key. Crane's sound is at its peak of power and confidence; the arrangements are simple but solid; it's all solidly-throbbing rock music of a certain vintage and level of professionalism that satisfies without exactly getting your heart racing (which is probably a good thing, cause if this cd brings back good memories, you're old enuf to be have begun worrying about palpitations anyway); for sure, any diehard Hammond B & C fan will be in hog heaven wallowing in these two hours of Crane-ial surgery. (Alas, a broke, dispirited, heavily-drinking Crane committed suicide at age 45 in 1989 after one too many Atomic Rooster comeback dreams fell through: another of rock's small tragedies that you shouldn't hold your breath waiting for BEHIND THE MUSIC to cover.) In all, this is one I enjoy with an asterisk and a bit of a guilty conscience. Let's call it judiciously recommended to 70s scholars and graybeards who know better than to expect "Selling England By The Pound" here.

JEFF HEALEY / Live At Grossman's - 1994
"Live At Grossmans 1994" is the first release in a new series from Eagle Records and Eagle Vision taken from the Jeff Healey Band's archives. This CD release was recorded at Grossmans Tavern in Toronto on the 22nd and 23rd of April, 1994. The Jeff Healey Band were at the height of their success, especially in their native Canada where they had registered a string of 10 hit singles between 1990 and 1994. Blind from when he was just a few months old due to a rare inherited form of cancer, Jeff Healey developed a unique style of guitar playing with the instrument flat across his lap that in turn gave him an instantly recognizable style and sound. He died from further cancer problems in 2008 at the tragically early age of 41.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - RAVE ON BUDDY HOLLY
VA – Rave On Buddy Holly (2011)
In some respects, Rave On Buddy Holly is a standard tribute album: it salutes a legend by rounding up classic rockers and hipsters to cover his canon, a practice that has been in place for nearly a quarter-century. In another regard, Rave On Buddy Holly is quite different. Encouraged by producer Randall Poster, the 19 artists involved do not settle for mere replications of Buddy’s hits, they play fast and loose, sometimes radically reinterpreting the original. Often, the effort is appreciated even when the rearrangement doesn’t quite work, as on Karen Elson‘s overly ornate “Crying, Waiting, Hoping” or Lou Reed’s turgid grind through “Peggy Sue.” Yet even if these…
…particular cuts don’t click, they nevertheless sound faithful to both the artist and Holly, a trick that’s usually not pulled off on tribute albums yet often is here. This is as true of Nick Lowe’s casually straight-ahead “Changing All Those Changes” as it is of Florence & the Machine‘s “Not Fade Away,” which strips the tune of its signature Bo Diddley beat, and the pleasures of the album lie in discovering which direction an artist choose to follow: to discover Julian Casablancas turning “Rave On” into a Phrazes for the Young outtake, to hear Kid Rock try to wrestle “Well All Right” into the confines of a Stax stomper, to hear Modest Mouse work a handful of tempos into “That’ll Be the Day,” to hear Paul McCartney go inexplicably batty on his slow-grooving “It’s So Easy.”
