VARIOUS ARTISTS - RAVE ON BUDDY HOLLY

VA – Rave On Buddy Holly (2011)

In some respects, Rave On Buddy Holly is a standard tribute album: it salutes a legend by rounding up classic rockers and hipsters to cover his canon, a practice that has been in place for nearly a quarter-century. In another regard, Rave On Buddy Holly is quite different. Encouraged by producer Randall Poster, the 19 artists involved do not settle for mere replications of Buddy’s hits, they play fast and loose, sometimes radically reinterpreting the original. Often, the effort is appreciated even when the rearrangement doesn’t quite work, as on Karen Elson‘s overly ornate “Crying, Waiting, Hoping” or Lou Reed’s turgid grind through “Peggy Sue.” Yet even if these…
…particular cuts don’t click, they nevertheless sound faithful to both the artist and Holly, a trick that’s usually not pulled off on tribute albums yet often is here. This is as true of Nick Lowe’s casually straight-ahead “Changing All Those Changes” as it is of Florence & the Machine‘s “Not Fade Away,” which strips the tune of its signature Bo Diddley beat, and the pleasures of the album lie in discovering which direction an artist choose to follow: to discover Julian Casablancas turning “Rave On” into a Phrazes for the Young outtake, to hear Kid Rock try to wrestle “Well All Right” into the confines of a Stax stomper, to hear Modest Mouse work a handful of tempos into “That’ll Be the Day,” to hear Paul McCartney go inexplicably batty on his slow-grooving “It’s So Easy.”
1. Dearest – The Black Keys
2. Every Day – Fiona Apple & Jon Brion
3. It’s So Easy – Paul McCartney
4. Not Fade Away – Florence + The Machine
5. (You’re So Square) Baby, I Don’t Care – Cee Lo Green
6. Crying, Waiting, Hoping – Karen Elson
7. Rave On – Julian Casablancas
8. I’m Gonna Love You Too – Jenny O.
9. Maybe Baby – Justin Townes Earle
10. Oh Boy – She & Him
11. Changing All Those Changes – Nick Lowe
12. Words Of Love – Patti Smith
13. True Love Ways – My Morning Jacket
14. That’ll Be The Day – Modest Mouse
15. Well…All Right – Kid Rock
16. Heartbeat -The Detroit Cobras
17. Peggy Sue – Lou Reed
18. Peggy Sue Got Married – John Doe
19. Raining In My Heart – Graham Nash

DEREK AND THE DOMINOS - Electric Factory Theatre, Philadelphia, PA, Oct. 16, 1970

Derek and the Dominos - Electric Factory Theatre, Philadelphia, PA, Oct. 16, 1970

This caught me by surprise:  some tunes that I didn't know the Dominos had performed in concert, including "Mean Old World," "Ramblin' On My Mind," and "Motherless Children."  The better part is that Eric plays slide on them, making it that much more interesting.  A bit light on sound quality, but I think the show itself makes up for any flaws.

Thanks to the original source for this!!

DAVE MASON - – Certified Live / Let It Flow (Remastered)

Dave Mason – Certified Live / Let It Flow (Remastered 2011)

Great Britain’s Beat Goes On (BGO) imprint continues its definitive Dave Mason reissue series with this two-fer containing excellent remasters of his 1976 Certified Live album and his 1977 studio effort, Let It Flow. Certified Live was released in the aftermath of Peter Frampton’s massive success with Frampton Comes Alive! At the time, it was thought by Columbia Records that — since both men were regarded as British guitar heroes and Mason had experienced some pop success on his own (some six years earlier with the single “Only You Know and I Know” and the album Alone Together) — this would net great rewards. This was not to be, obviously. That said, Certified Live is a deeply satisfying concert offering. It was recorded absolutely live with no studio overdubs…
…and contains a couple of tunes he recorded with Traffic, including “Pearly Queen.” However, its true highlights are the funky opening version of “Feelin’ Alright,” his faithful but emotionally deep and ragged version of the Eagles’ “Take It to the Limit,” his own “Sad and Deep as You,” the blues classic “Goin’ Down Slow,” a 12-minute guitar-slinger version of the stellar “Look at You, Look at Me” (written with Traffic drummer Jim Capaldi), and, of course, “Only You Know and I Know.” The second disc in the package includes an album that defined Mason ever after in Let It Flow and its Top 40 single, “We Just Disagree.” Despite the single, there are other fine tracks here, including the R&B-influenced “Let It Go, Let It Flow,” the lilting ballads “Seasons” (with Stephen Stills and Yvonne Elliman on backing vocals) and “Spend Your Life with Me” (with a great saxophone solo by Ernie Watts), and the Caribbean-rhythms-meet-guitar-jam “Takin’ the Time to Find.” Along with the two-fer Alone Together/Headkeeper, this double-disc set provides an excellent introduction to Mason’s wide range as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter.

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM – Seeds We Sow

Lindsey Buckingham – Seeds We Sow (2011)

Since resuming his solo recording career with 2006's Under the Skin, songwriter and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham has worked steadily but quietly. After the gorgeous Gift of Screws in 2008, he toured briefly and returned to the shadows; but the three years between it and 2011's Seeds We Sow was fraught with change. Buckingham left the major Warner umbrella and created his own label, Mind Kit Records. He recorded, performed, and produced Seeds We Sow at home. The sound of this album is very different form anything we’ve heard from him before, even if his musical and lyrical signatures are all over it; they pick up where Gift of Screws left off. That said, sonically it couldn’t be more different than anything he’s done before: it sounds like a self-made recording, …
which is a very good thing. Buckingham’s classy songwriting and guitar playing are trademarks, but so is his ambition as a record producer. Seeds We Sow is delightfully ragged. “When She Comes Down” has a bassline that’s actually distorted in the final mix, as if it were a polished demo. That said, its gorgeous melody and lyrics, carried by layers of voices and guitars, create a blissed-out love song. “In Our Own Time” is a labyrinthine rock tune whose guitars simulate strings, as organic and synthetic percussion create twin pulses that contrast beautifully with his melodies (there are two of them) and which criss-cross and breed. “That’s the Way Love Goes” is the only track here with other musicians: drummer Walfredo Reyes, keyboardist Brett Tuggle, and bassist Neale Heywood. It passes for a big, explosive rocker on this set, full of Buckingham’s knotty Baroque pop touches, but it’s a very basic production. “Stars Are Crazy” is about the results poisonous romantic relationships reap. Buckingham’s lyric understands that they are all too human; long after they end, they pick at our emotional scabs. His multi-layered acoustic guitars and harmonies act as other voices, empathically reflecting back to us the haunting regret and desire for redemption in the middle of the night. “One Take” is a punchy, snarling, confessional rocker. “End of Time” is a classic Buckingham tune. It may be about karma, but it feels like a guttersnipe Fleetwood Mac delivering a pop song. He delivers — and makes his own — a solo acoustic cover the Rolling Stones’ “She Smiled Sweetly,” to mark the end of a remarkable, homegrown project that challenges listeners to expand their definitions of Buckingham and include him as an indie singer/songwriter.
