MUDDY WATERS - "UNK" IN THE FUNK
Muddy Waters - Unk In Funk [1974]
Late Muddy Waters for Chess – produced in conjunction with Ralph Bass, Muddy's longtime associate in the studio, and done with a style that's a lot more rootsy than the title might imply! Instead of the electrified funky style that other Chess bluesmen were going for in the early 70s, or which Waters used on his late 60s albums, this one is a more back to basics set – with stripped down arrangements, and the kind of electric down homey feel that must have been big with the college kids. Pinetop Perkins plays piano on the set, and Carey Bell Harrington throws in a lot of harmonica. Titles include "Electric Man", "Trouble No More", "Unk In Funk", "Everything Gonna Be Alright", "Waterboy Waterboy", and "Rollin & Tumblin"

SANDY DENNY - The North Star Grassman and the Ravens [Deluxe Edition]
Digitally remastered and expanded deluxe two CD edition of the late British Folk singer’s 1971 debut solo album. CD1 contains the original album plus four bonus tracks including the previously unreleased instrumental version of ‘Lord Bateman’. CD2 contains 12 bonus tracks including five demo versions of songs which were previously only available in her lavish 19 CD box set plus BBC recordings and live tracks.
Following the breakup of the short-lived Fotheringay, Sandy Denny returned with her first post-Fairport solo album, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens. Produced with ex-bandmate Richard Thompson and longtime engineer John Wood,…

…who would go on to produce the bulk of Thompson’s work with Linda Thompson, the record consists of eight evocative Denny originals, along with the traditional “Blackwaterside” and a pair of borrowed rockers. There’s a looseness and roominess to the sound, with acoustic guitar, piano, and Thompson’s electric guitar leading the sparse backing from former members of Fotheringay, along with the occasional accordion, violin, pedal steel, and strings. Songs such as “Late November,” “John the Gun,” and “Next Time Around” are among her best, while “Blackwaterside,” featuring Thompson’s guitar and accordion, continues to show her mastery of traditional music. Because her songs tend to lean toward the melancholy and are primarily on the slow to midtempo side, Denny had to look elsewhere for upbeat material. Choices such as Brenda Lee’s “Let’s Jump the Broomstick” and a ragged yet somewhat effective duet with Thompson on Bob Dylan’s “Down in the Flood” are good ones, though both sound as if they were afterthoughts. Her best record was still a year away, but The North Star Grassman is a solid effort from Denny’s sadly shortened solo career.

RICHIE HAVENS - MIXED BAG
Richie Havens - two albums from 60's
Mixed Bag is a 1967 album by Richie Havens. Although sometimes described as his debut, this was actually Havens's third record. It followed two earlier, lesser-known releases on Douglas Records. This was Havens's first record after signing on with manager, Albert Grossman which lead to this recording on a new folk music section of Verve Records. Mixed Bag is frequently cited as the singer's best work and was his first album to appear on Billboard's charts (appearing on both the jazz and pop charts). The recording was the first to introduce a wider audience to Havens's rich baritone vocals and the full-sound of Havens's distinct guitar style (thumb-chorded and played in open D tuning).
"High Flyin' Bird" (Billy Edd Wheeler) – 3:35
"I Can't Make It Anymore" (Gordon Lightfoot) – 2:48
"Morning, Morning" (Tuli Kupferberg) – 2:17
"Adam" (Havens) – 3:34
"Follow" (Jerry Merrick) – 6:22
"Three Day Eternity" (Havens) – 2:15
"Sandy" (Jean Pierre Cousineau) – 3:12
"Handsome Johnny" (Lou Gossett, Havens) – 3:53
"San Francisco Bay Blues" (Jesse Fuller) – 2:30
"Just Like a Woman" (Bob Dylan) – 4:46
"Eleanor Rigby" (John Lennon, Paul McCartney) – 2:42

RICHIE HAVENS - Richard P. Havens, 1983
Richard P. Havens, 1983 is a 1969 double album set by folk rock musician Richie Havens featuring a combination of studio recordings and live material recorded in concert in July, 1968. The album combined original material with several of the covers for which Havens is known. Notable songs include "Handsome Johnny" and the singles "Stop Pushing and Pulling Me" and "Indian Rope Man", the latter of which has been multiply covered under its own name and in retooled identity as "African Herbsman." The genre-bending album was critically and commercially well-received, reaching #80 on the Billboard "Pop Albums" chart. Initially released on the Verve label, it has been reissued multiple times in various formats, including by Verve subsidiary Verve Forecast Records, PolyGram and Australian label Raven Records. It has also been compiled with albums Mixed Bag and Something Else Again in multi-cd set Flyin' Bird: The Verve Forecast Years on the Hip-O Select label.
Except where otherwise noted, all tracks composed by Richie Havens.

JIMMIE VAUGHAN - PLAYS MORE BLUES, BALLADS & FAVORITES
Jimmie Vaughan waited nine years before releasing last year’s Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites, but it took only 12 more months to come back with a follow-up. The older brother and mentor to the late and enormously popular blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan has played a major role for decades in carrying on blues traditions himself. The second volume of cover versions from the Texan guitarist proves as entertaining as last year's collection of vintage R&B and early rock'n'roll. Founder of the Fabulous Thunderbirds (and big brother to the late Stevie Ray), Vaughan yokes his stinging, minimalist guitar to a driving band laden with growling saxes. Standards such as Amos Milburn's "Bad Bad Whiskey" mix with unusual takes of Hank Williams and Ray Charles numbers as Vaughan switches between up-tempo rockers and down-hearted blues and his vocal sidekick, Lou Ann Barton, adds sass. An old master at play.

JIMMIE VAUGHAN - PLAYS BLUES, BALLADS & FAVORITES
The blues-rock master's first album in nine years! Blues, Ballads and Favorites is blues-rock pioneer Jimmie Vaughan's tribute to the music that inspired him, with covers of songs by Little Richard, Jimmy Reed, Roy Milton, Roscoe Gordon and others. The album was recorded in Austin, Texas, and features legendary blues singer Lou Ann Barton on two tracks. Other highlights include a brand-new instrumental, "Comin' & Goin'," and a version of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" featuring vocals by Bill Willis, the famed Hammond organ player who recorded with James Brown and Bill Doggett. Vaughan founded the iconic Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1974, and they became famous for the high-octane blues-rock sound that earned them critical acclaim in the '70s and platinum-selling albums in the '80s. In 1990, Vaughan recorded a duets album, Family Style, with his brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan, shortly before the latter's untimely death, and then went on to a successful solo career. - amazon.com

NEAL SCHON / I ON U
Neal Schon - I on U [2005]
One must give credit where it is due to Steve Vai and his imprint, Favored Nations. Like CMC International is to hair metal, Vai has assembled some of the most revered guitar shredders of the '80s and '90s and given them a safe home to roam freely and express their creative visions, without having the normal pressures of record labels hanging over their heads. The latest to join the family is Journey axe-slinger Neal Schon, who returns to the solo light after being away for several years.

COMMANDER CODY AND HIS LOST PLANET AIRMEN - The Early Years 1967-1970 [Original recording remastered]
Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen - The Early Years 1967-1970 [Original recording remastered]
This two-disc set collects a treasure trove of rare, live, and unreleased tracks from country-rock outfit Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. Recorded during the group's early days in Ann Arbor, Michigan, prior to the release of their 1971 debut, LOST IN THE OZONE, the 35 tracks here are loose and amiable, and recall the Grateful Dead at their most carefree, sans the heady Haight-Ashbury vibe. While the recording quality can be a little suspect at times, the band's loveably gritty takes on country, honk-tonk, bluegrass, and Texas swing should appeal to anyone interested in true-blue '60s country rock.
