In the Blues Tent of the New Orleans Jazz Fest 2011, the most valuable player of Friday's (May 6) closing set had to be Gregg Allman's new liver. After all: No it, no him. And no deeply satisfied Blues Tent. Looking fit and singing strong for a man of his mileage, Allman fronted a brawny, horn-driven band that sounded more Memphis or Muscle Shoals than Macon, typical of his solo work. The old liver, a victim of Hepatitis C, was swapped out about a year ago. Long may the new one run. Friday, multiple ovations met solos and song endings. A few Allman Brothers Band favorites made the playlist, but only "Melissa" would remind anyone of the version they first heard, on 1972's "Eat a Peach." The Allman Brothers favorite "Whipping Post," best known as a slinky 6/8 jam on disc and endless classic-rock-radio plays, was unleashed as a 4/4 stomp. In addition to his new plumbing, Allman has been revivified by the reception won by his album of blues-chestnut covers released earlier this year, "Low Country Blues" (produced by T Bone Burnett, some keyboards by Dr. John).

In the wake of Rush's commercial success, suddenly quite a few Canadian prog rock acts began appearing on the scene -- Triumph, FM, Max Webster, and Saga. The latter group is best known in the U.S. for scoring a sizeable hit during the early days of MTV, "On the Loose," but the group issued many an album over the ensuing years, and the 2004 import compilation, The Very Best of Saga manages to collect most of their career highlights. While their big brothers Rush started out "prog" and then later embraced melody, it appears as though Saga was pop-minded all along. Picture a cross between synth popsters the Buggles and early-'80s era Rush, and you're not far off from the style that Saga specialized in. It also turns out that the group had quite a few other selections that mixed both musical worlds, as "On the Loose" did, as evidenced by such standouts here as "How Long," "Wind Him Up," "The Flyer," and "What Do I Know" (the latter being Saga's last notable U.S. radio hit, back in 1985). Saga continues to crank out albums on a regular basis, but most longtime fans will agree that their best work occurred during the late '70s to mid-'80s, and that's the exact period that the 15-track Very Best Of.

Working alongside her producer David Cole, Melissa's songs celebrate a spiritual time of year where people can rejoice in their traditional, or non-traditional ways, and celebrate a winter solstice filled with love and peace. This ten song album has newly composed songs such as "Ring The Bells," "Light A Light," and "It's Christmas Time" interspersed with traditional holiday standards such as "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "Blue Christmas."
