DAVID BROMBERG - USE ME
David Bromberg has been a part of the American music scene since his debut in the mid-’60s as part of the Greenwich Village folk
scene. Since the release of his ’71 self-titled debut album, he has gone on to issue several dozen albums. In his spare time he’s
provided session guitar work for such artists as Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and many more. His 2007 release, Try Me One
More Time, was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Folk Album category. His new album, Use Me, will be released in
July. The concept for his new release began when he was in the studio with John Hiatt. Bromberg wondered if he might impose
upon him to write a song for his new album. This led to the idea of then asking a number of friends to each write a song for him.

FAIRPORT CONVENTION - FESTIVAL BELL
It’s been 44 years since Fairport Convention got together to emulate the American folk-rock bands they admired. Along the way, they started delving into the folklore of their native land and kicked off a revival of interest in the traditional music of the British Isles. In 2011, the band is still going strong, with original member Simon Nicol still on board, along with Dave Pegg, almost an original member with 31 years in the band under his belt. Chris Leslie (fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki) and Ric Sanders (fiddle), both vets with more than ten years in the band, contribute most of the original material, compositions that hew closely to the band’s roots of traditional and singer/songwriter music. Several tunes here sound like they could end up on Fairport’s next greatest-hits compilation.
…Leslie’s “Mercy May” is a brooding song that details the doomed voyage of Lord Franklin to the Arctic Sea in 1850. Sanders contributes “Ukulele Central,” perhaps the least typical tune on the album, a ragtime-meets-vaudeville number featuring a quintet of ukuleles and drummer Gerry Conway on washboard. The title track, a playful romp written by Leslie with a tongue-twisting folk/rap lyric and an insanely catchy melody, is another winner. Covers include Richard Shindell’s Civil War tune “Reunion Hill” given a melancholy reading by Nicol and featuring Leslie’s bluegrass-influenced mandolin fills. “Around the Wild Cape Horn,” a new tune by Ralph McTell, is a sea song with a jaunty arrangement that combines British and Irish influences. It’s driven by Pegg’s melodic bass and Leslie’s mandolin. The also cover themselves by reprising Sandy Denny’s “Rising for the Moon” the title track of the band’s 1975 album. Here it’s given a midtempo reading with Leslie singing lead and Sanders adding his distinctive fiddling to the mix.

KEN HENSLEY & LIVE FIRE - FASTER
2011 album from the former Uriah Heep keyboardist. Recorded in Riga, Latvia in three weeks with Live Fire, Faster offers everything you would expect from a classic Ken Hensley record... and more. Opening up with the mystical and mesmerizing melodic rock of "Set Me Free (From Yesterday)", Hensley & Live Fire deliver goods as well as setting the tone for an album that is nothing short of strong songwriting, hooks and pure playfulness. The Waybacks handle every performance on this live disc with humor, originality, and jaw-dropping musicianship. In fact, the main difference between the performances on this live disc and their studio albums is that they play with more energy and a looser feel. The musicianship does not suffer a bit, and is always in service of the music. The quality of the recordings is also great.
How many cds have you listened to recently that feature:
- slide guitar and slide mandolin played in unison?
- great originals, traditional celtic songs, and inventive covers of John Fahey, Rev. Gary Davis, and Blind Blake tunes?
- a bizarre marriage of classic TV theme song and classic hard rock?
- the best guitar, mandolin, fiddle, bass and drums you're likely to hear anywhere?

Everyone I know who has heard this band has become a fan. Ages 2 to 92. Left-wing to right-wing and everything in between. Serious musicians to tone-deaf physicians.
Do yourself a favor and get this CD! Better yet, go and see the Waybacks when they come to your area. I promise you will not be disappointed, whoever you are. http://www.fileserve.com/file/ZPFFVMV
DEEP PURPLE - PHOENIX RISING - 2011 [CD ONLY]
Deep Purple - Phoenix Rising [CD + DVD]
The first DVD to document Deep Purple’s turbulent last year before the band split in 1976. Exclusive new interviews with Glenn Hughes and founder member Jon Lord that open the lid on the problems that beset the band as they toured the world: Death, drugs and devastation, which led to their eventual disbandment. Archive footage from the tour includes interviews with Tommy Bolin, David Coverdale and Ian Paice, while rare and previously unreleased concert footage includes performances of Purple classics ‘Smoke On The Water’, ‘Burn’ and ‘Highway Star’. Live versions of ‘Love Child’ and ‘You Keep On Moving’ from the MKIV line-up’s one and only album ‘Come Taste The Band’ also feature as part of the previously unreleased film ‘Deep Purple Rises In Japan’ – included in full, within this DVD.
Other highlights of this extraordinary and powerful documentary includes film from the start of the tour in New Zealand plus the coup de grace; recently discovered, previously unseen footage from the infamous concerts in Jakarta, Indonesia. The darkest point in Purple’s career that saw the band ripped off to the tune of $750,000, but even worse, the tragic death of one of their crewmembers that resulted in some of Purple’s entourage arrested on suspicion of his murder – something no amount of money could have compensated for. A truly Unique film that reveals the excesses of life in the mid-seventies in one of the world’s biggest rock ‘n’ roll bands.
